Baffled that the majority of Steam users felt it necessary to vote in so many completely irrelevant (AAA) games - would've thought the corporate circle-jerk that is "the real" game awards should've been enough; i console myself in the face of such terrible nominees in all categories (but not to say i disagree with all of them) by assuming that the games which were nominated were because people thought that might have discounted the games during the sale a bit more what a tortured sentence. Still, SMFH. But that's democracy. And there's that phrase referencing the masses' need for a bath, a-HA a-HAHA huhhhhh

Um what, the monster game was one of the best events ever

Well I like clicker games but it really destroy the mouse and if I'm not mistaken there are some targets that were not fulfilled especially on the last days of the sale.

I don't care all that much to be honest, but many people might have just nominated whatver came up on their store page to get that "Award nomination committee" badge (I know I'm guilty of that with the "Whoa Dude" category... please don't hate me lol).

+1
They could have called it game of the year awards and make the witcher 3 blood and wine dlc win even though its a DLC'
or make Overwatch GOTY because its such a innovative and good game.

The first part (nominating games) may have had some reasons to exist: people could nominate games for a category, and then the 5 best ones got to voting. That should have ended there.
Voting is the stupid part: most people do NOT know all the 5 nominees, so they just vote on the game they know from the list. And the other stupid part of voting is the card: some people vote only for the card. (I did so for one category as well...beat me for that :) )

I miss the achievement thing with the coal... I know people cheated, but it got me to try and play games I otherwise wouldn't play. That was years ago though...

i agree from one point if you wanna organise awards you cant have all the categories made by poeples choise, usually everytime in people choises awards unless you voted for that you feel frustrated with other peoples choise , its in human nature you feel bad cause you think you made the wrong choise. From the other point i see gamers not feeling entirelly happy with serius events and awards . Maybe if it becomes a thing with steam every winter sale naxt year more thought will get into it and it will be better

A handful of the games do actually match the categories, but yeah... most of them don't. Also, the community chosen categories are just about as awful as the official ones. I have a feeling Valve combined related suggestions and gave the categories their names... because I find it hard to believe that enough people actually suggested "Boom Boom".
Initially, I thought it was an interesting idea... then I remembered the kinds of people that make up the Steam community, and I just couldn't see the event going well. And, I was right. I can only imagine the number of trollish and Half-Life 3 related categories they received. I seriously hope they don't do the Steam awards again, just like that damn Summer clicker monster game thing, and pretty much every other community event Valve have done. Why can't they just go back to doing the daily flash deals? Ugh. ):

I chose Bioshock for the "Whoa Dude" when the awards were first announced a while back. I am surprised (or maybe not really) that it didn't make the final cut.

It is hard to vote for a game one does not own or has not played. That's why a game sold 5.000.000 times will get more votes, while a medicore successfull indie game with only 250.000 unites sold will not even make it on the list. So yes, the most popular games have better chances to win.

None of the nominees has nothing to do with the category they've been nominated in and that is true for all the categories. It seems people just vote for most popular games and give 0 poop if they are even remotely connected to a theme. Whooa dude doom? Whoa dude gta v? really....whoa,dudes...
Here i said it.
