:D Just a thread to post your suggestions

I'll start with one myself :)

It would be nice if there would be some kind of banner to show what giveaways you have entered on the frontpage. So that you don't need to click the giveaway, but got a direct overview to see if you have joined the ones displayed ^^

Also, being able to sort would be nice (i.e. New draws since last login, by age, etc.)

For those with public accounts it can also keep them from trying to enter games they already own :D

Would love this too.
I actually entered a giveaway for Trine, and I'm trying to find it because I have it, and I want someone who doesn't have it to win.

<3. I wish other people were as considerate as you. A bunch of the people in my Frozenbyte giveaway already have at least one of the games, if not the whole bundle already.

Great idea, something I think the site should have had in the first place. I also have some of my own, so here goes:

  • Create an RSS feed for new giveaways. It would really come in handy for me, and hopefully other as well.
  • Be able to sort the "Manage Your Giveaways" section by the columns.
  • Options to change the layout of the front page:
    • number of giveaways per page
    • change the size of each giveaway on the list

I will add to this list when I think of more :).

I keep looking for an upvote button, but I also keep forgetting this is reddit; possibly there should be a voting system for this whole 'suggestions' bit. Or I can just reply wth a +1 like that guy below me.

1) What if giveaways that you've entered are highlighted in a different color, make them partially transparent, something to make them look different than ones not entered. It can get confusing if there are 5 contests for Portal and you've entered one of them. You have to go into each one of them to figure out which you entered.

2)Building off what iLiaWneK suggested:

"It can get kind of hard going through 14+ pages to see all the games currently open to enter. What if there were different view options, like steam has for its library of games. There could be a tile view which only shows the game name and possibly who is giving it away. You could go further with this and even group like games (say: Portal). So you would see "Portal (5)" and once you click on it, you can see who the five people giving away portal are. This would make for quick skimming of games, either for those looking to enter or for those looking to see if they should start a new giveaway."

3) I think emails should be sent to people when their giveaway concludes. It can get far too easy to forget about the site for a week if a lot is going on. This would ensure the giver delivers and doesn't get negative feedback.

4) Android/iPhone app. How else would I view the giveaways while I'm on the toilet.

5) It'd be nice to know when someone replies to me in the comments. It'd suck for someone to ask a question and it go unanswered.

6) In a user's profile I noticed none of the stats are clickable. Seems like it'd be nice to be able to click on comments to see what they've last said. Though that might be irrelevant for what the site's main objective is, giving games.

7) If the game being given away consists of a steam CD KEY or steam URL to receive the gift, have a field for that when creating a giveaway so the key can be automatically released to the winner upon the closing of the giveaway. This would more fully automate the giveaway process and insure the person creating the giveaway isn't lying. To add to this, create a steamgifts.com email address that people can send the steam gift to. Once the email is sent the steamgifts' email address will have a URL to open the game, which it can then redirect to the winner.

8) What if the winner already owns the game being given away? I've already seen a few people entering Portal contests that have played hours in the game.

I like the idea to filter out games you already own, but people keep bringing up that this would require profiles to be public. I don't see how this could be a site-side function. Logged in users can maybe just manually set games they don't need to see in the list (such as the dozens of Portal giveaways at the moment).

That or at least be able to sort the giveaways according to taste. Time left, alphabetically, and newest/oldest should be options.

Going off what other people have said, there are a lot of contests for the same game, say I enter a few for Super Meat Boy, if I won it I'd like an easy way to remove entries from the other ones.

EDIT- Strike that, I'm an idiot. You can go into "Manage my giveaways", go to 'Entries' and easily remove yourself. cg is clearly a psychic.

1) Sort out through games you want to enter to win.
2) Messaging system.
3) Contest system, to like, ask for some sort of submission(?) and best one wins. Maybe?
4) And everything that's already been said.

Allow the giveaway creator to start a veto against a winner which could be verified by site admins. Or contact all the entrants and have a vote to uphold to veto or not.

maybe higher percentage of winning based on number of sales the person has done and comments. or something like that

I just thought of a suggestion. When you do a giveaway, you are able to set the amount of time it is open for, but the minimum is one hour. Likewise, maybe an option to sort of limit the amount of people able to enter, though it should still have a minimum number. That way, say you did a giveaway, and wanted to reward the more active or vigilant members, and so the first ones to enter are in it, and you can cut it off at some number of people.

I dunno, just a thought, but I don't know how well it would work. Discussion?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Sorry, but I don't really see the need. If you want to reward active members, I'm sure there's a simpler way round it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You don't see the need? For some games now there are over 500 entries, some way more than that. That makes it a small chance that an entrant will win. If you could set the limit lower, it could reward the people who are there at that exact point in time, or you could simply make it much better odds for the entrants.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Its still the same odds though, because you have to be lucky enough to join the giveaway before its full. It makes no difference.

Most of the giveaways with a large amount of entries have had those entries from before the points system was introduced. With the points system, people are being much more careful with their points - entering giveaways they're only interested in.

The points system is still early, and CG is constantly evaluating the site and keeping up with the forum discussions to refine the points-system to find the balance between making giveaways accessible, but making sure points are "limited" enough so people don't enter every giveaway that pops up.

I don't think there'd be a need to "limit" giveaways once the point system is finalised.

how does this site pick a winner? Is it random or does the user that created the give away pick someone?

Reason I'm asking is because i've seen the same person winning multiple games back to back.. and well that's neither random nor fair.

I think the site should have a lock on how many you can enter within a time period/win within a time period. I dont think you should be allowed to win more than 1 game every 24hrs.

Just my two cents.

From what was posted on Reddit, it's a cron job that runs every 5 minutes that randomly selects a winner. Since the contests always end in 5 minutes, the winner is automatically chosen upon ending.

I want to have the ability to add the giveaway-code (steamcode for the game) to the raffle before the time goes out, so the winner gets the price right away, instead of having to wait for me to send him the code.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

that's a suggestion i like. have the contributor put the code - or the gift pass ID that comes with the email - to the giveaway, which then gets automatically forwarded to the winner(s). the winners could still vote for or against the contributors in case the giveaway was a fake. that should speed things up

If it's not too much trouble, could we see the anount of points required on the listing for public giveaways?

A couple of times I've been looking through the list, though "that looks good" opened the link to the detais page and saw that it was 5 points more than I have.

I know, I'm lazy! :D

What about the ability to give away guest passes for games? say i buy a game and get 6 guest passes along with it. i could put them all here (in a single giveaway with 6 copies), and they would be treated as if it costs $1. that would mean it generates one point for everyone and everyone can choose to use that point in the giveaway or keep it for something else. i personally think the idea is pretty good, what about you? discuss!

Suggestion: warning/banning users who just try to incite inflammatory remarks. There's far too many posts whining and complaining about the current random giveaway system with certain users targeted as scapegoats. Have the mods do some enforcing; the last thing the forums need are topics questioning the "randomness" of the giveaways and users like Sneeches spouting his nonsense.

"the last thing the forums need are... users like Sneeches spouting his nonsense." and "Suggestion: warning/banning users who just try to incite inflammatory remarks." You seem to be contradicting your own statement in the same paragraph unless you agree that you should be banned as-well.

on the forums, the "Last post xx minutes ago by" string should be a link to find said last post, since its not always at the end of the thread. to find the latest posts, i would either have to look at each post individually or i search (crtl+f) for the string "minutes"

There should be another page for most contributions over all time. Although I don't think Dark Messiah Might and Magic should count towards people's totals because they're giving away the Free Multiplayer Version, not the Paid Single Player version from steam. There should be a distinction and there should be 2 Dark Messiahs on the giveaway list, SP and MP.
