I used a normal game to farm cards, manually changing it's appid by modifying steam_appid.txt. Until some recent patch, which let's the game complain about Steam not running unless I start it directly from Steam launcher (which in turn resets my fake appid). I farm my cards in Virtualbox in an old WinXP, so I can't use IdleMaster (becaus eof the dotnet 4.5 stuff). SAM work fine for me though ... funny enough it does not work for achievements, but it's still great for fake playtime, as you said. Thanks for the hint.

that's not possible, you just don't know what's wrong. I had a similar issue not so long ago.
you might want to start by checking the setting/configuration, and make sure you start it as admin

It is not unlikely at all.
Recently I did a windows update, which was incompatible with my version of Start 8, and caused crashes bad enough that I had to reinstall windows. It happened a few times before I realized what the incompatibility was.
So it is entirely possible that it used to work and does not work anymore because of compatibility issues. Turning off a PC while a file is in use can also corrupt them. It has happened enough times in the past to me. Or if a program crashes when it was using a certain file, etc.
I can appreciateyou trying to help the OP with their problem, but saying that it simply is not possible for the application to not work for them is just you making assumptions.

lol, but Start 8 (I guess, by the name) is a tweak of the OS, so of-course updating the OS can break it. Game Mods are exactly the same, if the game is updated the mod is likely to need one as well. However, here we're talking about a normal program (almost).

The reason I used Start 8 as an example was that the update to windows broke windows for me. It didn't really affect Start 8. My intention was to show that different software behave in unexpected ways sometimes on different machines. It is not always going to work out in a predictable manner. It is entirely possible that he has issues running the application on his PC. It might be his computer at fault, or some other application, and yes, it might even be incompetence. But judging simply based on the statement, that it does not work for him and coming to the conclusion that he must not be doing something right was a tad hasty in my opinion.
Once again, I do appreciate you trying to help him, but I just felt the need to point out that you might want to get some more info before deciding the cause is the OP doing something wrong.

Actually, a lot of things can "break" Idle Master. Because it's connecting to web services that are outside my control, the software becomes fragile by definition. In this case there are hundreds of different combinations of account settings (account language, store region, community settings, which games you own, etc) that can cause software like Idle Master to behave in unexpected ways.
I try to account for all of these different combinations of settings but sometimes I can't catch them all. In cases like this it's good to have concise error reports so I can attempt to account for these changes in future releases of the software.

maybe this: "I thought I could use my notebook to idle". Here it would be implied that you cannot (use nbook to idle).

There is an old version of idlemaster available on github that works on Windows XP. I've been using it without a problem on my XP for quite a long time now.
If you can't find it by googling then check threads in Idlemasters steam group, you'll find a link there somewhere.

Because I have the same problem, I still use the previous version. It uses .NET 3.5, so there will not be any compatibility problems. It is not as clean as the current version, but it gets the job done. You can download it for a week. Afterwards, I will reclaim the space.

I get new cards every 20-30 minutes. Did you adjust the settings before using it? That is my guess as to why you are not having success. You can watch this video to know how to configure your settings.

i did exactly what i saw on the video. i see that it starts to idle, but the game doesnt idle. like it is stuck at 0 hours played on steam, i guess i need to try another farm program. i heard SAM is a good alternative. tho never heard of it so.. thanks for reply and helping me btw!

yyeah, but it works with one account too. Im using it, running fine. isnt that hard to use. and i can run steam in offline mode too without problem to play another gaems. Idlemaster obviously is the better option, but if he isnt working, i recommend Archi's app =p

Idlemaster has it's own forum, you're more likely to get better help there, including from the actual dev of the program, in resolving your issue.

If you could provide more information about what exactly is happening with Idle Master, I might be able to help. You have mentioned a few times that it just crashes. Could you post the last few lines from your error.log file? Or tell me exactly which steps you take with the software that cause it to crash?

Idlemaster problems fixed once steam fixed it's badge pages and stopped reworking itself daily like it was last month. Install of latest version should work. Archibot 0.8.02 is awesome than rest atm.
