In the past weeks I've seen a few giveaways that include a set of rules in their descriptions, most of them look good, but there is one that confuses me. It says that if the key doesn't work the winner agrees to have the giveaway deleted.
Is this allowed?

Yes, I've been on both ends. Its completely fine as long as the winner is accepting.

I forgot to mention that this giveaways usually include a line saying that entering the giveaway means that you accept that.

Heh. Its its public... Not a lot of people read descriptions...

But yes if you enter it then you should be aware of what will happen. Happy to take the game or happy for the giveaway to be deleted.

Well, if you didn't agree in the end, you'd probably get blacklisted by the creator but as mentioned by others, you don't have to agree to anything the ga creator asks you to. No official rules for that. It's a nice thing to do though.

If the winner agrees to it then yes. Must be probably because of Steam's new gifting policy.

Only if the winner agrees to allow it to be deleted.

I supposed it depends what the description says, but you aren't bound to anything. The site guidelines state:

Giveaways

Creating

  • You cannot ask users to perform any special action in order for their entry to be considered valid...

I think that says about additional subscribing some YT channels or joining some groups or other "special actions" like that.

yes, but those are provided as examples, not an all inclusive list of actions

Most of the GAs I see that say that are for the keys that were once free. Some those keys were given out duplicate and some keys were killed if not activated.

I think it's a fair rule. Once I was giving away a very old key and I didn't know if it was still valid (it was), so I wrote in the description asking people to enter only if they're fine with that. If the key didn't work and the winner demanded a new key from me, well, I think it would be plain rude.

But in that case, would it be easier to just give the key away in some other way without creating a giveaway? I get that you will not get the CV for it, but you don't risk breaking the rules.

lack of fair chance for everyone interested, I guess.

I don't like the concept of the key being snatched by someone (or something) without a word.

I've had great results with that site. I recommend restricting the keydrop to some big public group like S.Gifts.

Rude maybe but 100% within the rules.

The rules on this site are called guidelines for a reason. Being a douche just because you can (e.g. using a script to enter a giveaway without reading the description and then arguing for your "rights") doesn't really contribute much to the community. Fortunately I've only met nice and friendly people here so maybe the problem is theoretical.

yes, the "guidelines" also say you "should" activate your wins in your account. but if you don't, you get suspended/banned.

doesn't seem too much like guidelines to me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Actually as Mully already pointed out the Guidelines part is misleading.

Won gifts should be activated to the Steam account used during registration, and they should not be regifted, traded, or sold.

is listed under Guidelines as well and you absolutely can get suspended if you fail to do so. So those are not really suggestions, they are rules.

I personally wouldn't be in that situation anyway because I keep track of my keys and if I'm unsure if a key is still good I don't make a gib with it but rather drop it on the orphan key thread using the site I recommended to you above.

Just like you can get smacked for cutting the line even if it's not against the law. Still look like guidelines to me. ;-)

Naw, the equivalent for that would be getting blacklisted (doesn't require breaking the rules and could be compared with "vigilante justice") but I'm sure in your vast 3 month experience here on SG you have learned everything there is to know about this site :D

You cut the line too many times here, though, and they ban you from the line.

Well, yes and no. If you have a nice winner, everything is going to be alright.
But ff a winner insist to have the game anyway, it's his right. And support won't delete without the winner's approval. No matter what is written in the description.

Private\special\imaginary rules are not allowed as per the SG guidelines.

As long as both ends agree, it's fair game.

seems like an entitlement rule to me (i want my cv but i'm not sure this will work!). doing that in a public ga will only lead to problems.

now, if someone asks that in a whitelist giveaway and it's ignored by his "friends", then i would find it really inconsiderate.
you know, like some ga creators asking users to enter only when they will play that win, instead of +1ing their libraries. 100% rude and selfish.

What about no-cv games/dlcs? GA creator has nothing to gain from that, he just wants to give people some old keys that he has stocked.

then he should give them to his friends, or drop them in a thread.
or make a whitelist ga with people he trusts.

it's still using the giveaway system in sg, so it must follow the rules.

It's allowed but it's non-binding so the winner can demand a working key and it's not against the rules.

So it's basically an imaginary rule that can't be enforced.

I don't get why it annoys people. All it means is the creator doesn't know for sure if if the key was used or not. But if it wasn't he's giving you a chance to get it, and all it costs are some pts, and if it is deleted, the creator gets nothing either. I'd take that gamble all day long. Especially when they are telling you upfront.

Demanding they buy you a copy if it didn't work, or denying any GA's by people who aren't 100% sure their keys work just seems meh for me.
