It definitely looks like a "more fun with friends" game, and I have a friend who's pushing me to get it so that we can play co-op. He really likes it, and even with random players joining in, I think it'd be a lot of fun.
One of my Steam groups actually had a Payday2 gaming event during the free weekend, and I was going to try it out, but the free trial would have expired an hour after our event started, which would have barely given me a chance to play it. :-/

Oh my goodness it's awesome! Sure the Dev's are a little sketchy, but who cares? I've got over 200 hours into it and I've certainly gotten my money out of it. Highly recommended ^.^

I'm close to 300 hours now, it is a great game but really crippled in some aspects. DLC content is really unfair compared to what you get in base game. The previous dlc added a secondary weapon which can literally one shot dozers even on DeathWish difficulty and to this day snipers are the only thing that can penetrate shields (minus that special shotgun ammo but guess what - that's a dlc as well).
With that said, playing it with people who know what they're doing is amazing and the game gets a whole new dimension once you switch to DW. Also all the amazing work of Simon Viklund doesnt get much praise as it should.

The soundtrack is great. Works truly well to create proper feeling for different situations. I have not played DW that much and I find it generally tedious as the whole idea of swarming you with dozens of officers gets quite stale after a while.

I tried it while staying with my cousin for a while (I don't own it), and I don't think I enjoyed it... (I actually made a thread on this a few weeks ago) But then again, when you start sweating and shaking and feeling feint from being online with strangers, in intense situations nonetheless, it makes it hard to enjoy much of anything that involves other people :P From the thread I created earlier, I can understand how people find it fun, at least if you have a nice and familiar group to play with. But nice song, btw :)

It is curious how online gaming can reduce the control we have over our feelings. The result is usually more raw interaction between people: enjoyment, rage and frustration. I think it partially is the result of missing the physicality in the interaction. Those little nuances of non-verbal communication that can change the meaning completely. Sometimes it is so easy to forget that the being behind those polygons is an actual human. But I am getting off the track here.
As you said, playing with familiar people people could work better. It is what I prefer with co-op games.

There was a free weekend recently for this game. I am interested hearing what people who haven't played it that much thought about the game. If you tried it, what is your opinion? If you haven't would you like to play it and for what reason?
Payday is over.
