I could live with how stupidly flashy it is if it wasn't so damn greedy.
It's a launcher. If i want some useless app hogging my resources while i game i would have Chrome open.

Same. I might have to switch to pirated versions for games which need large amounts of RAM and use Steam's DRM feature.

New Steam Client on my System clogs in at 225 MB.

Guess you're running an ultra lite version lol
Did you just look at the top process or did you look at your available RAM before and after it runs? Because I'm not the only one who is getting a huge RAM hike from it.

Also, the other one was lighter for me. And I'm happy not to be using GOG. I don't think things that work fine should be beautified just because competitiors are running worse clients...

See my other comment just below, it might help.

Also, Fnord says his client's memory leak only really occurs if it is minimized to his taskbar, not closed to his notification area.

The things we need to do...
Thanks for the tip. Apparently there's also some config trickery that allows to go back to the old client but they'll probably plug that with the next update. God forbid we're allowed to decide what works for us, right?

A simple "text only" setting would work just fine and they wouldn't even have to admit they screwed up.

Apparently you can run it with

-no-browser +open steam://open/minigameslist

in the target box of the Steam app shortcut. There is a space before -no-browser

and you get a minimalist version that clocks at 50 MB RAM. No prettyfying, not much in ways of features but at least it helps if you're running greedier games than RPGMaker stuff and visual novels.

Yes. Unfortunately, using that extension has some side effects:

keep in mind that this will have the following side effects:
1) no in-client store browser
2) reverts new Chat to old Chat
3) because of #2 it will disable Remote Play Together
4) no new Library
5) no library bigger than the minigameslist
6) no downloads screen
7) no web browser in the Overlay

I use #1 & 6 :(

I don't use any of these but yeah I get that it's a sacrifice.
At least you can use it if you're running a game that is on the high side of CPU and RAM

Yes.

At least one has the option of switching to that ingame for games which require every bit of ram you have. One can always switch back to the regular version to use those features again.

And one can temporarily downgrade, as I mentioned elsewhere on this page.

225 MB? I don't believe that. Here it's about 1200 MB. The old client used less than half that.

I think he probably only looked at the top "Steam" process. There are about a dozen processes open for me, not counting all the other related processes that are running so it's clearly higher than 225 MB;

~280 on all processes total here. It goes up by around 100 when I have it open depending on the page (it's highest when you have the most games visible at the same time) but it drops immediately after minimizing or running a game. Both low performance/bandwidth modes on since there's no big noticeable difference in how it looks between on/off might as well as have them on.

Adding the total for all processes running under Steam banner I get about 550MB just for those (the bootstrapper alone runs at 150MB) but there are also other instances of processes that go to work when you run Steam.
Looking at my available RAM before and after I run the client, about 1GB (no game running) is gone when I run.
The Steam board is filled with people bitching about memory leakage and performance issues so I'm sure it's not just me but maybe it's because you're running a 32bit system?

Anyway, I'm going to the minigames list. If Steam doesn't improve their client with options, I'll stick with that.

I'm not running a 32bit system and why it says 32bit I don't know. I am however on the beta client and can confirm I've seen it go over 2gb ram usage on a previous version but I have not seen it go up in the past week.
I just tried opening as many windows in steam as possible (friends, chat, news popup, settings windows) and scrolling through my library at the same time. The highest usage I hit was ~500 mb (watching ram in use from the task manager jump by 0.4-5GB). The moment I stop scrolling it drops down to 200-300.

Another thing I tested is disabling low performance, bandwidth and GPU acceleration. I saw no difference in ram usage with low performance/bandwidth modes however the moment I disabled GPU acceleration steam instantly jumped to nearly 1gb ram usage when just scrolling and no other windows open.

That said I do agree that steam is heavier now (just scrolling can get my Ryzen 3700x usage to 30%+ and RTX 2070S to 40%), I'm not really a fan of this making everything a webapp that's been going on with a lot of big programs in recent years.

Interesting. Did you check if the Steam client you're running is 32 bit then?

I hope I can get it to where you are in terms of resources. I have the RAM to spare but some games are really getting greedy and I'd rather keep it for smooth gaming that just for running a client in the background that does nothing useful.

I don't really know why they made such a change after the beta seemed to have done pretty poorly with testers. I'm sure it's not about users so there must be something in it for them but I can't figure it out.

Hopefully they'll make adjustments. We'll see. Thanks for the replies

Is there even a 64 bit steam client? The WebHelper does run as a 64bit process, only the bootstrapper is 32bit. Tried searching but there doesn't seem to be any info other than a linux distros dropping support for 32bit and steam no longer working on them.

There is a way to block all the pictures, which does reduce system resources, or so I've heard. It involves changing the permissions/owners of the subfolder into which the pictures are stored. (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\subfolder-whose-name-I've-forgotten)
Also, go to settings>library and check "low bandwidth" "no community content" "low resource" and this might help.

Odd. my Steam client is only using 550MB of RAM (in total, for all related processes).
Edit: OK, going back and forth from various store pages to the library and collections, I got it to go as high as ~630MB, but that's about it.

Permalink

I didn't even click anything. With no game open and nothing but the library open (a subcategory at random), I'm up to 900+ Mb.
When I started a game, it went up to 1.3 Gb. I didn't add all the processes, I just looked at the available RAM before and after.

Ok it's only 1 Gb (I won't even try the overlay) and it's not like I'm running a calculator but the old one topped at 250Mb, that's quite a massive hike for beautification.
Now imagine running a Ubi or EA game that needs two clients open. So long, Assassin's Creed lol

On my PC the difference between old steam client and new one is very negligible. I'd recommend you take a look at something on your PC slowing steam down. It really shouldn't be "far slower" unless your PC is decades old.

Also depends on the games you play i guess because the new library is eating RAM like a greedy pig so if it will change something for you at some point

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

without deactivating anything it is eating 400MB of ram. I'm sorry but are really you saying that those 400MB are the stopping you from running games?
With every thing deactivated steam uses 200MB, sometimes less. If 200-400Mb are really needed for your PC to performe well then you have bigger problems then steam.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

1) It is not eating 400 MB. It's eating over 1 GB of my RAM while not running any game.
But I"m glad it's only taking 400 MB of RAM for you.

2) It's not for Steam to decide how I use my resources. It's a game launcher, nothing more. Whether users have 8 GB of RAM or 32 GB of RAM is irrelevant. The old client did the job perfectly: launching games, for less than 200 MB.
The extra GB of RAM for no reason at all is unacceptable.

And no it's not preventing me from running games. I just hate pointless resource hogging and the new client runs like a pregnant whale on all my computers, including my gaming rig that runs recent games over 70 FPS.

it's okay, I can adapt.
I mean, the font is too big for my taste (even with the smallest option) and there are way too many pictures cluttering everything, but I can adapt.

The only thing I hate, and I mean HATE, is, that Steam forces it's pseudo social media crap on me. Is it so hard to make this optional? I'm happy for everyone who likes this, but I don't.

I don't want to see the achievements of my friends, and if I'm curious, I visit their profile.
I don't want to see their screenshots, unless I go to their gallery.
Both of them could contain spoilers and the last thing I want to see on my game page are spoilers.
And it's hogging the majority of the game page, My own achievements are collected somewhere on the right site, as well as my screenshots and DLC's. Why is my own stuff shoved to the side? O_o

They can implement whatever fancy stuff they want, make it as big as they want, I don't care as long as I can choose what I want to see and what not. Or at least where these things are. Put MY Achievements, MY Screenshots and stuff in the centre and the stuff of my friends at the bottom and I'm fine. I mean, I am using this launcher with my account, so chances are that I'm interested in MY progress.

:D These were the first things I changed when I tried the new library during the beta phase. It really helps, but I still hope they give us more options, so every user can enjoy the things he likes while at the same time avoid what he does not want ^^
Or maybe we get skins to take care of these problems. I've read that the launcher will be more customizable.

For now, I used the script to go back to the old library :3

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most definitely. I wouldn't mind a checklist of options, either. I also wouldn't mind being able to resize or drag and drop the various sections around the UI, but that's probably wishful thinking on my part.

I'm easy to please, though, so I can't complain too much about the new UI, other than it's taking some getting used to.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+1 My thoughts exactly.

The bolder font will take some getting used to but the social media crap that's shoving my own info to the side needs the boot( I have since turned on the low bandwidth mode now).
I want to see at a glance what dlcs I have and my progress, achievements, etc. Instead of social media, it would be very helpful to see sales on any dlcs I don't have for games in my library all on one store page ofc preferably but I will take on the game page too.

Steam has a sort of choose your placement for profiles info, why not for the client? I would imagine it'd be an even more resource hog than now but hey at least make it perfect if it's going down that path.
