I just found this blog article about a game that has just been relased now.

I found it really interesting but I doubt that the people who illegally get it, will realize that their action will cause a real impact on the real world and do something about it... Here we are talking about a small indie team that came up with what looks like a really fun and deep drm free game...

What do you think about what they did and the game itself? Here the game on greenlight, I would like to have it on steam so i think we should upvoted it and buying it, if we can ofc. If greenlighted, they will give steam key to the legit buyers.

no giveaway atm, maybe later :)

Check Game Dev Story out. It was the original game developed by Kairosoft. This is just a copy-paste of mechanics and creativity, from the original one.

Nice idea.
However I don't like how they're collecting user data. Quote: We know this because our game contains some code to send anonymous-usage data to our server.
At least the legal version should have an option to opt-out.

Anyway, they could always make a kickstarter for any upcoming projects, so they have the money up front.

I wonder if in a few years all games will be funded by kickstarter ...

After watching the greenlight video... wow. It looks like they stole everything from Game Dev Story on android and just added to it. Downloading the demo to see if my assumptions here are valid.

1 decade ago

They didn't quite steal the Kairo Games game named Game Dev Story on both iOS and Android. They merely liked the idea and improved on it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I just played the demo. If by "improved it" you mean took every single core mechanic and used it by either duplicating it exactly or simplifying it, word-for-word copying some review dialogue (in-game reviews), and then expanding some features a little bit, yeah I guess you could call that "not quite stealing".

As far as I'm concerned, this isn't liking and improving, this is theft and they deserve to have their game pirated into oblivion.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Then again, Kairo doesn't deal in PC stuff, they only deal with the Apple App Store and Google Play store. This should technically be the PC port I think.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That would be valid if it were licensed as a port. I'd love to see a port of the entire Kairo library to PC rather than having to push my purchases to BlueStacks, and would gladly buy the games again to support. But this is Gameloft-grade duplication, just with less finesse in naming and presentation.

From this page you can clearly say that the Windows version was the original one (OS-Windows95).

What's interesting, is this part: このゲームは無料です , Which means that the game is free :D

According to the instruction: 以下のファイルを適当なフォルダに解凍してから、GameDev2DX.exeを実行してください。 - Just fire up the GameDev2DX.exe file. Here is the Link to the Game

EDIT: Uhm, I suppose the game will be in japanese so yeah, probably not such a great find for you guys as it is for me, sorry...

EDIT2: Well, if anyone knows japanese or is just interested in Kairosoft simulators - it seems that there are few more free games that they made in the Win95 era, before going mobile: MangaStudio"Story",LibraryOwner"Story",Real, Orginal version of GameDevStory, Secondhand Bookshop "Story" V1 And V2, a month later :P but the last two will probably not work if you won't mess around with regional settings and go all Japanese with your comp ;)

From their website:
"Game Dev Tycoon was inspired by Game Dev Story (by Kairosoft), which was the first ‘tycoon’ game we enjoyed playing on the iPhone; however, from the start, we wished the game would work and look differently. We wanted a game development simulation which would be less random, more about your choices and a little more realistic. We began working on what would become Game Dev Tycoon in 2011 and created the concepts and game mechanics as well as the game itself from scratch."

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah. They enjoyed the game, then developed the exact same game concept and exact same mechanics from scratch. Seems legit to me. Also, to reference your comment on the official greenlight page, they do not give credit to GDS, they just reference it. And giving credit to the company you stole from does not justify the theft. If they had actually licensed it, then it would be a different story (EDIT: pun honestly not intended).

I don't have an iphone so I can't comment on the similarities between the two, I'm just saying that at least they say from where they got the inspiration and since it's not avaiable on the pc I would say it even helps the original by getting it some attention.

I just think their piracy stats is a bit skewed. If they release a cracked version BEFORE they release it on the public. The pirated version will quickly gain more popularity and discussed/passed faster since they can get it for free, while genuine owners will be overshadowed by the sheer # of pirates. If they didn't release their cracked game that early but still manages to know who's genuine to a pirate. That pie graph would be a tad more different.

Linking to a reddit where every dev response boils down to "outside it looks the same but inside it's different" means nothing. Especially, when going back to the demo, even some UI direction has been noted by some users now as having been directly copied. The dev claims they "invented our own gameplay and mechanic" (exact words from the reddit), but it's the EXACT SAME GAMEPLAY AND MECHANIC.

EDIT: Honestly, if sanitizing my registry so I could reinstall BlueStacks again wasn't such an issue, I'd do so and record the games side-by-side.

Piracy isn't a problem. Retarded DRM and shitty games are.

If the game is good, it'll sell.

1 decade ago

Stats showing much smaller PC share in AAA video games market is a proof.

Not sure if proof that "piracy isn't a problem", or only that consoles have much more shitty games (that's why we beg for Red Dawn Redemption, Dark Souls and tons of others...). But it's proof anyway.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Most AAA games are tedious, and number of PC players know it, and thus they don't go near it, which results in lower sales numbers. Of course no one is going to take a blame for their lack of imagination and creativity for making such a boring game, and it is much easier to blame pirates for every mistake the studios and publishers make.

Games are going to change when you don't mindlessly throw money at overhyped, unfinished products. Download it first, test it and if it is good, then go ahead and buy it. I don't feel comfortable buying something I only know what "journalists" have said.

12/10 game of the year of all years, buy it now!!!!

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think you meant "PC players will come near it, just won't pay for it", seeing what was most pirated games in 2011 (can't find info about 2012) - Crysis2, CoD, Battlefield, Fifa12. And to show they aren't only going for worst stuff, there's also Portal2.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Valve has said they don't care about pirates. Their games create enough profit for them to go on without caring about small portion of people playing without paying.

Are you surprised to see Cod on the most pirated list? Not like it isn't breaking sales records every year, same goes for Fifa (at least on the sports genre). Battlefield 3 is just riding on the fame of BF2. Only thing Crysis has going for it, are the graphics, that's pretty much the only reason I can imagine anyone pirating it.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Those numbers are counter argument for your "PC players (...) don't go near it". As you can see, they go near it as much as console players, they just don't buy them.

I was thinking that as well. It sounds like they gave themselves more advertising to the pirates than they did for the rest of us. In that light, of course there were more pirates getting the game. 1)This is not a game. No matter what you say, these 'indie' titles are sorrowful attempt at getting some easy money.

2)I bet that if they made any good game they would not have went under. It's much easier to blame piracy, pirates and everyone else for failure rather than bad management, bad games and bad sales of bad games. It's much easier to point fingers at someone than to take blame for personal failure. Trust me, I know.

3)It's a rough world out there. Indie games are on every corner, indie developers are springing out of nowhere. Running a dedicated company for indie titles which publishes games such as 'Game developer' titles is ridiculous. Maybe if they have successfully expanded to growing android/iphone market or made some real titles, I would have felt sorry for them (Like I felt tremendously sorry for THQ).
Besides it's a studio ran by two brothers who knocked off a Japanese game. Who really gives a fuck? Not me.

So I just quickly went through the article and... I'm baffled by the arrogant behaviour by these self-titled developers. What they did reminds me of big AAA publishers who decide to add some nasty bugs in case their games get cracked. One thing that really appals me is the amount of shit this guy is able to spit out! "First who did it" - not so much, remember Miami hot line? That guy was awesome. Not only did he allow for his game to be on TPB but he also updated it and kept ongoing conversation about improving gaming experience even for those who were not willing or couldn't afford to pay for full copy. What this douche does is completely opposite. He changes his own game and then uploads it so all those who download it can't play properly. I mean, why? Is he aware that large number of people like to pirate game at first and if they like it then they go and buy it? No, of course he isn't, because if he was aware of that he wouldn't have gone and done something as stupid as this. And not only that but he literally laughs in their faces. It's even worse than just plainly calling them out. As far as I'm concerned, the only reason I'd buy this game is to put REAL version on TPB and let people enjoy it for free. So he can laugh out loud and cry. I mean, what does he want? People to go around and buy copies of his game? How many big developers have failed to deliver? And he's shocked and appalled because his little piece of junk is pirated? Jesus, some people really do have too big of a opinion about themselves.

Voted down. They completely ripoff Game Dev Story( down to the freaking name!) and then complain about piracy? Hilarious.

Also, thats not how you turn pirates to paying customers. You will get very bad word of mouth. You know hot to get them to pay? Do like Hotline Miami, Anodyne or McPixel devs.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Exactly what I would have said.

Actually, exactly what I said (when this came up on reddit) was:

It's been done before. No Time To Explain devs posted a version with pirate hats. It was very buggy and put people off the game.

Contrast that with Anodyne or McPixel, both dev teams put up the actual full game and both have gone on to do very well financially speaking.

Pirates are not the enemy. Pirates are potential customers.

In this case, where it's a blatant clone of a great classic game (that was originally for the desktop!), I'm far more offended by the devs themselves than by any pirates.

1 decade ago

so they ripoff the other game, uh?... i was upvoted the thing, was a nice concept...
now i feel bad, Downvoted...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is exactly what I would expect for a day one graph from a small studio's game. They release a cracked version on a site that gets WAY more traffic than their main website could hope to get and are shocked that the numbers are so different? Even if every one of those pirates bought the game after deciding they liked it there really isn't enough time to see that. The graph is depicted after one day and so it's pretty much meaningless.

The dev here seems to be making the classic thought mistake that 1 copy pirated is a lost sale. This isn't true, never has been true, and never will be true. What really matters is how big of a difference exists in the people that would have bought the game with and without a pirated version. That's a much harer number to get a read on and to my knowledge nobody's actually put together remotely reliable estimates of that yet.

This dev has decided to play a prank on pirates that's probably going to harm their ability to change them from pirates into paying customers. As far as the pirates are able to tell the game is broken or just horribly difficult. Haha, good job making your job even harder devs.

I'm just excited so I'm writing random words that I think of!

Except people will upload the non-buggy version eventually. And then they get fucked because of the bad publicity they got. Devs of games like Hotline Miami, MCPixel and Anodyne posted patched versions of their game so people could play the games without a problem. And guess what? They got more sales because of that.

The only thing this will do is make people think the game is a buggy mess and they will never buy it. Thats just retarded,

If they think a leaked version of a game that was purposefully made bad is a perfect representation of a game then something has gone wrong. Also I really don't get how this is bad publicity.
