i have only ever pirated a game for demo purposes, there wasnt a demo and i didnt think shelling out how much they wanted was right without trying it first so i downloaded a copy, turned out i liked the game so i bought it but there are other times i have and gone no that game sucks im glad i didnt buy it and waste my money

If piracy was legal? Sometimes I would pirate, and sometimes I would pay money. It just depends on what's more convenient and whether or not I think payment would be deserved.
Right now, I don't pirate at all. I pay for everything. In the past, I pirated a lot. What's changed? I'm older so I can afford to pay for stuff, plus digital distribution makes it convenient. In cases where DRM is a burden, I simply do not buy.

If "Pirating" was legal then really all it is is getting a game for free, and given that this is SteamGifts, I'd wager that practically everyone would be willing to.
Also I will admit to doing things like taking advantage of price mistakes and ability to use coupon codes perhaps on unintended products to get freebies, I wonder if people consider that substantively different than outright pirating.

VERY good point on the exploits. I bet most people would hold these in different regards when really from a moral standpoint you're almost worse off abusing their bugs, because they are actually losing something they didn't intend to in that case, while when you download pirated software you're not directly stealing from anyone...
Hilarious, great thoughts, thanks.

I'd probably use it much like I hypothetically do now. But I don't really pirate at all, ever. Honest.
I'd use it to try out games I'm not sure of or are too expensive for my tastes (not paying $60 for a certain series famous for their five-hour-long SP camnpaigns and rehashed multiplayer I don't play). After I've played the SP campaign, I delete them and buy them on a Steam sale 12 months later when I'm feeling nostalgic for a fraction of their launch price.
Gotten burned by too many preorders and too many launch purchases.

This game takes 3 years to create and tons of dollars just for u to pirate free , sorry but have to say stuid dumb as

If you don't do it when it's illegal why would you start doing it if there was no punishment? You don't need to play a video game to stay alive and you don't need to pay full price to get a legit game if you shop smart. That being said my mate paid a ridiculous amount for Skyrim and on a AMD 7970 video card the damn game doesn't even run.
If only he had "pirated" his video card he would have known it wouldn't play Skyrim instead of paying for it!
YAAAAR MATEY

ummm a 7970 will play skyrim flawlessly... pirate hardware ...ummm what?

I dont see what is the great problem with piracy, I do pirate some games, and most of them I end up buying them, If the game is good it will get lots of sell sooner or later, and sometimes pirating some games helps you to avoid buying games that you dont like and wont be worth buying

tl;dr
As for the title:

I think developers would encourage players to buy with unique offers, like items or some premium treatment. Without that there's almost no incentive to buy for many people.
Me, I think I would try and buy most of the games I like, because I'd want to see more of the games I like =)

Hmm. Maybe but it depends if the ships I was pirating were defended and the risk to myself involved.
Famous examples of legalized pirates or Privateers include William Kidd and Fortunatus Wright.
Also this is a dumb question, if pirating world wide was legal the digital industries would not exist or would exist on a very limited scale.

I live in India. Everything is "legal" here. Yet, unlike most of my peers, I don't pirate. At least, not games. I wait till I get the game via trade or through a sale or something. That way, I can truly enjoy the game to its fullest. Its probably this way just with me, or probably not. I'm not against piracy either, because not everybody is patient enough to wait for a sale, and neither is everybody in a position to buy games.

Another Indian bumping in, same concept, save money, wait for sale, activate and play on steam, win win :D

Title says it all. I know most of you dont pirate games, And I was just wondering... Would you pirate if it was legal to pirate games?
Alternatively, Would you pirate if games had no DRM at all? (For example, If you pirate CoD you gotta play on cracked servers, But if theres no DRM a pirate copy is EXACTLY the same as the real thing)
