The need to breathe so much is due to carbon dioxide buildup more than the need for oxygen. If there was a different way to get rid of carbon dioxide from the blood, we would only need to breathe at a rate of about once per minute. :)

As an answer to the second question I will just quote this famous phrase: "Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman, in which case always be Batman".

1. One of my favorite sorts of interesting fact is finding out claims that are widely believed are clearly false. There are lots of things that get repeated all over as if they were common knowledge but which don't hold up to scrutiny even a little bit. Here are a few favorites:

-- There's no factual basis at all for the claim that we only use 10% of our brains. (Similarly bogus is the claim that men think about sex every seven seconds, and the contention that people are divided into right brained and left brained.)

-- Eskimos don't actually have an abnormal number of words for snow. They just have a grammar, like German, that lets you generate new ones from existing ones, which makes it hard to count. But their language doesn't have significantly more resources for talking about snow than ours does.

-- You often hear about medieval people thinking that the Earth was flat, and that it was pretty large compared to the size of the universe. Only later, the story goes, did we realize it was round (perhaps because of Columbus) and that our planet was tiny compared to the cosmos. (Neil deGrasse Tyson loves to repeat that second part.) But that's totally false. From Rome all the way through to now the educated knew that the Earth was round and relatively tiny. It was in the standard astronomy text everyone used for hundreds of years.
