Of course Violence is an acceptable game mechanic. Violence is as essential to humanity as sexual reproduction and food. For example, if you live in the United States, odds are Indians or some other people may have lived where you are now a long time ago. Thanks to violence, they no longer occupy the space that you now do. Don't get me wrong. I don't like it. But it's perfectly natural urge to resort to violence whether it be in self defense, or because you want what I have. Humanity's been doing it as far back as we can remember. So why not have it in our video games? At least in there it doesn't actually hurt others physically.

Agreed! As long as the violence remains as a mechanic that serves the purpose of the gameplay, then it should still be acceptable. Games use violence as a mechanic in order to: 1) Allow the player to fulfill a specific hero fantasy involving killing a perceived enemy, or 2) To entice prospective players into buying and playing the game with the expectation of some sort of combat-based gameplay.

That said, I guess that there is a reason why violence should be regulated in a game: despite what the audience may say, it is still possible for violence to be portrayed in such a way that the audience deems that the level of violence displayed is either too gratuitous or too graphic. The Grand Theft Auto series is tolerated more often than compared to the Manhunt series, because of how they use violence differently: whereas GTA uses violence as a means to depict and explore the themes of crime in society, Manhunt uses violence with the sensibility of a snuff film.

violence is an acceptable game mechanic. Not only does violence show some about the world and as renegade mentioned, the world needs violence, as it would make countries stronger and actually create jobs in a way (police officers) etc.

Violence is an acceptable game mechanic. It adds realism. I think one reason games are enjoyed by millions of people around the world is because games allow players to put themselves in situations they'd never be able to get into in real life, or ones they really wouldn't want to (Being chased by cops for numerous crimes). Violence makes this experience more immersive. You know you've done well visually when the player says 'Whoa, that looks so REAL!" but not so much when they complain about blocky graphics or lack of blood. It's sort of ingrained into our brains that there are certain things we are "meant" to see when something happens, and if you put a chainsaw to a guy's throat you expect to see blood, that's just how it is.

Also, thanks for the GA :)

Thanks for the giveaway! I think violence for the sake of it shouldn't be used, but there are games that yes, violence is the main drive of the game. I could say Manhunt for instance, where violence is a well employed mechanic as it is the main drive for the game.
