Or you can go support the devs and buy their game!?
How is epic helping devs by giving away their games for free!?

They bought their game. Did you really think, stores would give away developers games with no compensation?

They are still paying the developers for these claimed free copies

It's a misconception circling around. Epic Games is paying the developers for the games they give away. So actually they support the devs. .

I don't know if i can believe that, because i won't take basic statements without proof behind them.
Yep it is the internet and everyone is a hypocrite oh no.
But if you find the proof please post it, I would like to read that fact for myself.
Still doesn't change the fact the store sucks and that I can prove from others reviews and I have used the Epic Games store before.

Sorry I didn't read this before I posted my comment. But yes it's 100% true. I'm actually friends with some of the devs who have given games away and they got paid by Epic. Also, Epic announced they were going to do this awhile ago so you should be able to find it on one of their blogs.

I found where they posted it. It was when the EGS went live.

https://www.epicgames.com/store/en-US/news/the-epic-games-store-is-now-live

"The store will also feature one free game every two weeks throughout 2019. Epic is funding these free releases so you always have something new to come and check out. The first free game will be Subnautica, available from Dec 14th to Dec 27th, followed by Super Meat Boy from Dec 28th to Jan 10th."

It is free for anyone who wants it, but Epic is paying the devs for any free copy taken. So you are actually supporting Warhorse Studios and their Publisher, Deep Silver.

I am sorry, but I still can't support.
The exclusive stuff has just caused the console wars to move to PC platform wars which is unfortunate.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Unfortunate, but this is ultimately better for the consumers, since Steam won't have all the power, if Epic gains users, competition is important.
Either way, Epic is very generous towards smaller developers, they give them a far better cut then Steam, and have multiple programs that support indie developers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It seems to be all for devs and very little user.
There needs to be a balance.
Have seen how broken the store is?
Also there are more platforms than just steam and epic.
Competition already existed and epic new they didn't have what it takes for a store front so they strong armed exclusives and begged devs with big bags of money.
Big bags of money is great for devs though.
But why couldn't have made a good working store front: I loved epic's earlier phone games like infinity blade.
Lots of money just seems to sway people from ethical to greedy real quick.

Epic's doing what they need to in order to get a foot in the door. At this point, Steam's built up so much of a lead in the digital game distribution space on PC that the only way for a newcomer to even get into the race is to plow a lot of money into it, and offer things like free games (to bring in consumers) and timed exclusives. The timed exclusives are understandable too - even if developers are getting a better cut from the Epic store than they do from Steam, a lot of people are still going to buy a game on Steam first if everything else is equal (price, release date, etc.) So they needed to do something else besides offering free games. Otherwise, how do you even start to fight a juggernaut like Valve? (And no, "a better storefront/UI" would never, ever be enough to get people out of the Valve ecosystem. Not when they've already got years worth of achievements/cards/etc. on their Steam profiles. Can you imagine anybody saying,, "Epic's got a prettier storefront and a nicer friends list, so I'm going to buy from them instead from now on!" I can't.)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

While I was on the store for some of the free games, and unfortunate exclusives, I did get banned for fraud.
It never explained to me why I had that issue happen three times.
I assume the reason is because I had to get the games one at a time due to the lack of a shopping cart.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You were claiming some of the free games? From the start of your comments you sounded like you weren't getting the games for free and you were not supporting anything with the EGS. This whole argument you presented just turned a 360 and what it comes down to is your were banned for fraud. There's really nothing further to say. Best of luck to you.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I knew somebody would try to null anything I said with that.
All three times they gave me back my account and I still have an account that is currently collecting dust.
Also, yes I did jump the gun with my initial comments i will agree.
I initially bought some games because I didn't want to wait for them and they had some free games, but I was dissuaded after constant harassment from their fraud system from buying too many games one after another. Due to the lack of a shopping cart, do they have one now by the way?

Finally, where did I say I hadn't used the service before?

EDIT: I literally just read through my comments I did say I used Epic store before.
You didn't read very carefully did you FateOfOne?
Also, to assume people can't change is a bit naive.

I hate the gaslight of competition to justify bad behavior.
Neither group is perfect!
Also power really, there is competition: GOG, DRM_free, Origin, Blizzard, gamejolt, Itch.io, Uplay, Microsoft store
Just because steam has become the most popular, < opinion, doesn't mean it is a monoploy or as you said all the power.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Steam has over 38k games. The second largest, GoG only has 4k and most of the others don't even reach 2 thousand. Itch.io doesn't have a launcher, doesn't just sells games, so comparing it to Steam is like comparing any online store to Steam.
Steam is a monopoly.
I had no issues with the Epic launcher, didn't seem broken. Can't say the same about Steam...
I am not sure what you mean under all devs and very little user. Epic is likely creating a different kind of store with curated material. Sure it's very barebones at the moment, but frankly I prefer that's it's cleaner. The winter sale deals on Epic were far better than Steam deals, you could even get 10 dollars off from any purchase above 15 usd. Seams very user friendly to me. Also it's not greed. Steam takes 30% from all purchases, Epic only takes 12%.

Comment has been collapsed.

Please elaborate on Steam being a monopoly. Simply put monopoly is the only company in the market and can charge whatever they want without worrying that costumers will go elsewhere (or when competition cant do anything against you)

Is Steam really like that ? Size =/= monopoly. Yes it has the biggest market share, but launchers arent oppressed and steam isnt really overinflating prices to a point you have to pay more without choice of going elsewhere.. You can buy steam keys outside their store, which in my opinion is the biggest deal breaker for them not to be a monopoly. I agree its good to have more choice and more competition for steam, but I just cant stand people calling it monopoly. It dominates the market, sure. But monopoly ?
The business dealings behind the curtain only proves that steam isnt even close to monopoly. Steam provides every service for devs, if epic can counter that - awesome. But why the hate all the time and name calling. Also - origin and uplay providing their own launchers and still selling on steam just shows that its the best way to reach costumers. Again - not even close to being a monopoly.

Sure it's not a true monopoly, but it's influence is quite significant none the less.

Is that really a bad thing?

Yes, because if there is no competition, Steam doesn't need to improve if there is no need to fight for customers.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But there is competition, I gave the list earlier.
You really think steam is this big power house, it is kind of hilarious :)
For me I see a large catalog and a good platform, which from experience is on par with GOG. GOG just isn't as popular < opinion

Also, since steam doesn't do exclusives, except for some of there IPs I think, they have to improve because most of the games on there can be played somewhere else, reference earlier list.

Have seen GOG galaxy 2.0 it is awesome! Seriously check it out!

Epic is likely creating a different kind of store with curated material.

This alone makes it redundant, not competition for Steam. You said it yourself, Steam rules because of it's all-encompasing catalogue. In the end, nobody cares how superior one platform is to another if one has all the games they want and the others have just some.

I was referring to the trashy indie games and other game maker weekend projects Steam has, most of which are likely not played by the majority of Steam users.
But I am not sure if this is an actual strategy obviously.

It doesn't really matter that much which platform has a ton of games, it is a bonus.
I want the platforms I use to be as user friendly as possible and not try to compensate with strong arm tactics like exclusivity.
Itch.io still sells games. It is not like they sell clothes.
I have issues with both platforms, but epics issue just didn't sit well with me.
I would like to look at Epic games's road map and how they removed the time frame for updates to the store to one give them more time and also not make promises for a better platform < (kind of opinion).
One do you know why steam takes the 30% cut because I don't it could a myriad of reasons. For one example it could be funding for their projects like Linux support, that friend play system, steam labs, etc.
Maybe Epic can just work with that 12% cut and don't need the extra money.

Last thing, yes the do have a curated store front because they are just starting. We will have to wait and see if that changes in the future.

I hope I didn't miss anything.

It is ultimately worse for customers. Any improvements made to Steam due to competition from Epic won't compensate for the exclusivity bullshit.

I am not sure you understood my point. It's not Steam that needs the improvememts, seeing that it's already huge. It's the competitors that need to improve so Steam can compete again for the customers.

Of course steam needs improvement all the platforms need to improve constantly.
Also, I am sorry to say that the point your stating now didn't really come across in that post.
Secondly, steam is constantly competing for customers using there frequent store updates and changes.

I really dont mind ES doing time limited exclusives. It is a harsh market with Steam monopoly, I waited whole year to get metro exodus on Steam I dont regret it. I got a fully patched game with all DLC content with 40% discount. I am glad ES did this exlusive because I would be tempted to get the game on Steam earlier.

Also I am grateful to ES that it took effortto bring some console exclusives to PC

Heavy Rain, Beyond, The Journey - great games that I wanted to play long time ago when I read about them

I can finaly enjoy without the need to buy console. I appreciate that

Not to mention they invested in saving TellTale Walking Dead series, another great thing I appreciate.

Not to mention all those free games that we benefit from cause we get good games for free, and developers benefit cause they get paid by Epic and at the same time their games gain wider recognition on the market with so many players playing them.

It is always good for customers if there is more competition on the market because we the customers benefit most from it. I welcome ES to the market as a good addition.

This seems like an really good game, and as others have metioned, it is/ was free on EGS, however I don't really support Epic Games, hence I don't have a copy of it there. Thank you for the extremely generous giveaway!

I'm a huge fan of the Metro series. And after Metro: Exodus went epic exclusive for a year, I held out from spoilers and everything. I bought it Feb 15th, about 30 minutes after it came back to steam (bought on steam that is). I just don't really support EGS :P
