Try the Reality Dysfunction series by Peter F. Hamilton. Or of course there's Hyperion and the various sequels by Dan Simmons. Since you like Douglas Adams have you tried Starship Titanic? That's co-authored with Terry Jones from Monty Python... Dune and the follow-up books... I dunno, there's so much good ground to cover. Let's see of more recent sci-fi there's Robopocalypse and Robogenesis by Daniel H. Wilson. For some good recent stuff that's somewhat lesser known... Mort(e) by Robert Repino, or 14 or The Fold by Peter Clines. Most of those are a bit further away from the space opera type but there's some good stuff. Oh and thanks for the giveaway as well.
