Forever War, Forever Free and Forever Peace are indirectly connected as they deal with somewhat similar, but very different war situations, with the focus on socio-economical changes and following a character through the story. I've read Forever War and forever Peace, I can recommend both or any of the two - maybe it's worth to read them in release order as the books reflect on the time of its writing - the 1974 Forever War was born because of the Vietnam War, grounding some of the conflicts between people on personal conflicts that stemmed from the real war.
Not at easy read, but very foreign yet very familiar. Not really a laid-back, relaxing read, keep that in mind.

I can recommend "Anathem" by Neal Stephenson - great, but heavy to read book.
Currently i am reading "Earth Abides" by George R. Stewart - it's good, but i don't know if is it going to end well. It's not fantastical, the only fantastical element is the end of the world by a virus.
