Can't vote in the US, but i'm a Sanders supporter nevertheless.
A Hillary vs Trump general election scenario would be pretty catastrophic regardless of the winner. Even if an independent wins, he probably wouldn't get the majority of the vote and then the government gets to choose the next president.
But the thing is, Johnson isn't a independent, he is a libertarian. If a independent tried to run at this point he/she would't be able to mathematically become president, while Johnson will be on the ballot in all 50 states. But it's not really about winning, it's about paving the road for a third voice in American (and possibly international) politics. Which will help us all overall.
