FYI: this is from the indiegala gameplay giveaway thing, it used to be that 9 out of 10 times the key was ok, but recently it has been more like 7 out of 10... it could well be a dud.
Unfortunately there's no way to tell it is a dud until one attempts to add it to an account which does not have the game/dlc
This is not a "PLEASE LET ME DELETE THE GIVEAWAY IN CASE IT DOESN'T WORK!!" thing, it's just a heads up.

If you already own the game trying to add it to your account will let you know if the key works as it will say you already own the game.

Actually no, it says the account already owns the game yes, and it's the only way to know which game it is (since indie gala gives it away as a "secret game"), but the problem is even if the key is already claimed, it will just say the account already owns the game, I really wish it wasn't the case...
It will only say it's already claimed once you try to actually claim it, which can only be done in an account which does not have the game.
