+1 I started it last week, already 33h in it and finished the main story and 2 story DLCs. Still missing a few achievements and some challenges so I can get a few more hours of gameplay (10 more hours maybe?). Totally worth it!

-1 has no replayability, is short as fuck, is quite repetitive and I, personally, think is overrated. If you want to have fun once, then yes, but replayability? roleplaying? No.

I mean for its price tag, its arguably one of the best around :) With a decent length main story + 2 extra story packs.

Oh! I didn't see the price. Then it's a very nice option, that price is very very good!

I really liked that game but I agree it has absolutely no replayability. Still a great game though. It's like what Assassin's Creed could be if it was actually developed by people who know what they're doing

Witcher 3 and Skyrim are your biggies in this category. Other cool titles to check out: Just Cause 3, Mad Max, Far Cry Blood Dragon, any Far Cry actually, Gothic games, Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines (get the community patch), Sid Meier's Pirates!, Sleeping Dogs, Mount & Blade, Deus Ex, and that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

I'll recommend Dragons Dogma. While not as open world as you may like it, and with a certain sense of linearity, you can do plenty of roaming without the games express say-so. Fond memories of disregarding early main mission objectives to go help villagers, or just go explore some little area that turns out to lead to an entirely new zone. Can be deceptively hard at times, but I had a blast. Sort of like an easier-access Dark Souls with more arcadeish combat that requires less intense timing, but still feels dramatic and awesome.

I never actually even got that far due to backing up the save folder and switching it out so I could run several different characters at the same time. I still haven't decided which I like best, as they're all pretty awesome. Hnng.

Give it enough chance for you to get through the tutorial, which has you playing a generic knight type and shoves you blindly through a bunch of stuff it doesn't explain very well. Once you're a scrappy little villager then that's where the game actually begins.

I was drooling over this because it was a damn console exclusive for years.. finally came to PC!
Wasn't too impressed with gameplay.. maybe because it was a few years old by the time we got it.
But my main gripe was when I got to the first major town(after running through much higher level mobs because this is where you.. change class? or pick better classes?), I was parkouring on the roofs of the buildings and I fell off MAYBE 15 feet or so.
Died instantly!
Most recent save was like two hours prior.
Fucking what.
Uninstalled.

Different levels of RPG elements, replay-value, and open-world qualities, but some essentials that haven't been mentioned yet:

  • Fallout: New Vegas GOTY
  • Any Borderlands game
  • Fallout 3 GOTY
  • Dishonored
  • Batman: Arkham City or Batman: Arkham Asulym
  • In terms of classics, the Stalker series (good bundle) and, thematically connected, the Metro series (also has a bundle I think)

From what's already been proposed I would give my two cents to Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (with the fan patch for sure), Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition, Shadow of Mordor GOTY, some of the more recent Deus Ex or Far Cry games as well.

Looking at the prices, Shadow of Mordor GOTY / Dishonored / Arkham City / Borderlands GOTY are probably the best options IMO, in that order. New Vegas is a steal at 2.49€, but the GOTY edition is 9.99€.

Side-note: Shadow of Mordor GOTY + Arkham City or Asulym = 8,98€, crazy price for the amount of hours you can spend with these two games.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning because it simply isn't mentioned enough.
You can get the full game + all DLC (no further DLC will ever be released) for a mere $9.99 USD.

This game is decent enough and fits what he is looking for. Beware it may have some bugs that won't be fixed by the developer.

New vegas, Skyrim. If you get those games, try to get the complete editions (with all DLCs) mostly because mods. You'll need to mod both of those games for the best experience. I personally prefer New Vegas.

You want the three of those categories in one game or a game per category?

Really any of those categories. It can be per category or just one game. I already have all the GOTY Fallout and TES games, Borderlands, Dishonored 1, Arkham City, and Witcher 3.

Borderlands 2 is, imho, much much better than the first one, specially with DLCs, wich are quite good, specially Tina's.
Arkham Knight is amazing, despite the fans, it has nothing to envy City. And, even if the ending is weak and rushed is quite spectacular and the beginning of the main story is one of the best in the batman series.
Check dark souls series, amazing games, hard but fair

Every time is a fresh start for me, because I try playing it around once a year. So every mechanic, and even menus, have to be learned from scratch. I really hope there will be a time when DF will have an OPTIONAL CASUAL mode, with 3d graphics, mouse control and simpler menus...
(I know there are options for 3d preview and other stuff, but still =))

Deus Ex 1 > Deus Ex HR (cant say anything about MD, but IW is pretty bad)
Borderlands 2 is a lot of fun, but you might want to play it with friends
Dark Souls 1/3/2 (in order), but you might find it it hand/challenging

Since no one said The Witcher 3 I'll say The Witcher 3. It's massive, gorgeous, full of great characters and tough decisions and can still surprise you even on the 3rd playthrough. Also, you need a minimum of 4 playthroughs to see all endings, as there is no final choice you can save before and just reload - the ending is determined by the choices you make throughout the game. It's really what every choice-and-consequence game should aspire to be.

As for price, it's only 40% off right now which still leaves it at $24. Not the cheapest game you can get, but it's completely worth every penny

Gothic 1, Gothic 2 with expansion (prolly best of the 3 games), Gothic 3 with community patch to fix the buggs. (also has one of the best soundtracks ever)

I see you played Path of Exile for less than one hour, don't know if you play it on the stand-alone client.
It's not open world, but it's very replayable. In a month or so there will be a great expansion which will add six new acts and remove the normal-cruel-merciless difficulties thing, you will have a single playthrough before getting to the endgame maps. There are tons of different maps with different areas and bosses, you can apply the modifiers you want to get more challenge (and rewards).
Don't really know if it's your cup of tea, but I can assure you the game really starts once you get to the endgame maps. As you know, the game is free, so trying doesn't cost anything.

Edit: forgot to say that areas are randomly generated, so every time you open an area, it will be different.

There's no real replayability in PoE. All you do is grind for better items once you reach the end of the story. Not really open-world either.

Well there is usually an expansion and a new league (with new mechanics, skills and items) about every three months. That adds a lot of replayability.

shadowrun series has also replayability (Probably not boston and less of all returns).

Dragonfall and Hong Kong are great RPG (turn based combat)

Replayability on a open world game? Uff... If I play a game 100+ hours I would definitely not reset my progress and start from the beginning.

Erm, well, I did. Many times.

I always try to find something new and a new approach to a game with replay value. This way I found out that the TES games are really cool for ranged combat (bows) - before I only tried swords or magic. And I try a male and a female char and how it effects gameplay. And sometimes try to only wear (good looking) clothes instead of armor - this works much better with magic chars, of course.
Normally I create my first char with a name starting with A, the next with B, etc. - so I know exactly how many I had. :) And I store all those (final) savegames on a backup drive so I can relive the feeling of a specific char if I want. <sigh> :)

Lemme see my gaming hours according to Steam - and many of those games I already played before getting the Steam version, so the many hours on the CD version like Morrowind or Fallout 3 are not even counted: Fallout 3: 5 chars and 200 hours, Fallout NV: 6 chars and 550 hours, Morrowind: 8 chars and 1500 hours, Oblivion: 4 chars and 250 hours, Skyrim: 7 chars and 2200 hours. Gothic 1: 6 chars and 7 hours (obviously I played that long ago many times, it's still one of my favourite games), Gothic 2: 8 chars and 80 hours, Gothic 3: 1 char (still unfinished, this game somehow did not really touch me) and 50 hours.
Ah, yes, and Deus Ex (the first) like 8 times fully played to the end, and Thief 1+2 and System Shock 2 at least 10 times fully played... :) Sometimes it just feels good to login and "be there".

I guess this is far too much time put into games. To set your world view straight: Since I have a child the gaming times went down to like 1/20 of the former sessions. Oops. Only once or twice a week now...

Good to have you back ;) Yesterday like an hour before you came back I said I think you're gone from SG for good since it took you "so long" after your suspension had ended to find your way back to us.

On the other hand you just destroyed my hope that there is any chance to escape SG :P
