Actually, simulating water isn't as easy as it seems. I did it once using Smoothed-particle hydrodynamics and Marching Cubes for the surface. It probably takes more skill to code than your average indie game

Which would be fine if this game wasn't using pre-made assets that come with Unity for the water (or at least something that looks an awful lot like it). Assets which are not actually simulating water anyway, rather they are designed to look like it through various wave equations to calculate surface displacement.

I agree with you. My point was that actual water simulation isn't as easy as people seem to think, but if the game simply fakes the underlying physics it's obviously no simulation at all

I don't think it sold too many copies, just a lot. They spent far effort on it than any of these other joke simulator games. But yeah, its human nature to gravitate towards whats successful and try to copy it.
