Edit: some good suggestions, and some good morality lessons so far. Keep it coming, folks

So, my son really enjoys watching me play FPS games, and wants to play himself.
He's played Team Fortress, CG:GO, F.E.A.R., Portal, Batman Arkham Asylum and possibly one or two others

But, (a) the games are a bit too mature for him, and (b) he's just not that good; he's still barely able to play with two hands. He only really uses one finger for moving. He takes his hand off the mouse to hit space so he can jump. etc. etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a game with a similar play style that is a lot easier (and hopefully not as scary / gory)

I was thinking of maybe starting him on something easier.
I have Hitman (2-5) Thief (1&2) and Max Payne (1&2) (apart from the acid scenes, which I'd do for him, the content is fine), which I think are good to start with. Or maybe Alice: The Madness Returns?

Or is there another FPS y'all would recommend?
I'm fairly liberal on content, and he won't notice the story whatsoever, though I would prefer it if it wasn't creepy or gory. But it's got to be extremely forgiving.

I second this.
It's the perfect game to test your child. Remember, you can actually finish the whole game without ever killing anyone.

Thief and Hitman (on high difficulty) weren't very forgiving gameplay wise. Alice: Madness Returns is quite mild, eventhough it has a dark theme and it's not too hard (though it has some platforming which might be challenging). I might recommend Quantum Conundrum, it's portal-like but it's aimed at children. Team Fortress 2 and Overwatch are about the most childfriendly FPS's I can think of. Unreal Tournament or Quake III Arena might be something for him, there's not much story and lots of shooting (you can play against bots instead of multi player).

CoD, he'll fit right in.

On a more reasonable non-joking side, you could start him off on something really old like wolfenstein, as there isn't a need to aim with the mouse and he'll just get the basics of movement down, which is really the most important thing in an FPS.

Personally I wouldn't let a kid under 10-13 years old play anything with blood splattering with bullets or just plain assassinations but it's your choice man. Max Payne is awesome but I played it on my teens and even then all that Lupino Satanic showdown with "the flesh of the fallen angels" gave me the creeps and scared the shit out of me, which in turn made more satisfying filling his fat ass with lead, but still definitely not suited for a 7 years old.

I read that they suggested you Star Wars games, I find these more suitable since they are lasers and very little gore (in Republic Commando you get bug juice at most I think). Try other genres like action/adventure like the other Batman games, maybe some fighting games like Injustice or Street Fighter?

yeah, I'm trying to steer him toward the less gory stuff.
Will probably pick up some star wars during the next sale (he's not into star wars though)

Well how about Half Life 1 and 2? They aren't very gory but might need some puzzle solving (they are fairly cheap on sale though!)

Crysis and Mirror's Edge are solid EA tittles without a bunch of stripped content in DLC form.

I don't think Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop? is even a FPS and neither Alice: Madness Returns, I think the first one is more of a sim and the latter an adventure game, having said that, Alice is great, a bit too deep and dark for a 7 year old in my opinion though, but if I had a son I personally wouldn't mind him playing it, it actually makes you think about stuff and I think that's way more important, but that's just me :)

Psychonauts is a great game, not a FPS but still would be great for kids. That, or Costume Quest.

I can recommend a silly, platformer RPG for kids that's 100% free for desktop and mobile: Poptropica.
