Edit: some good suggestions, and some good morality lessons so far. Keep it coming, folks

So, my son really enjoys watching me play FPS games, and wants to play himself.
He's played Team Fortress, CG:GO, F.E.A.R., Portal, Batman Arkham Asylum and possibly one or two others

But, (a) the games are a bit too mature for him, and (b) he's just not that good; he's still barely able to play with two hands. He only really uses one finger for moving. He takes his hand off the mouse to hit space so he can jump. etc. etc.

I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a game with a similar play style that is a lot easier (and hopefully not as scary / gory)

I was thinking of maybe starting him on something easier.
I have Hitman (2-5) Thief (1&2) and Max Payne (1&2) (apart from the acid scenes, which I'd do for him, the content is fine), which I think are good to start with. Or maybe Alice: The Madness Returns?

Or is there another FPS y'all would recommend?
I'm fairly liberal on content, and he won't notice the story whatsoever, though I would prefer it if it wasn't creepy or gory. But it's got to be extremely forgiving.

Which game should my 6 year old play?

View Results
Alice: Madness Returns
Hitman: Blood Money
Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?!
Max Payne
Thief Gold

I see he's old enough. So suggestions: Zombie Army Trilogy (fantastic bone crushing animations), Doom (more blood), Dying Light (parcours, melee)

Played Quake 2, when I was 5-6, and now I'm a psychopath erm.. a totally normal guy. You should try Heretic or Hexen, because they don't need proper aiming. Also I mostly played Call of Duty 1 and 2. I'd recommend 2, because it has regenerating health, and not so visible/toggle-able blood.

I'm a bit surprised, that you included Alice: Madness Returns, because it's a really f-ed up game. I was having nightmares from a House of the dead game and even from Rayman 2's scariest level: The Cave of Bad Dreams. When that one-eyed guy started to chase me, I was scared as hell, and had a nightmare on the night after.

Played Quake 1 at that age - no issues at all - except the voices in my head

Well lots of kids likes Team Fortress 2, but still violent like the others of your list. Better look for a game with no violence

Not sure if it's been said yet, but potentially Dungeon Defenders 1 or 2, fairly cutesy (Very kid friendly and safe), T/FPS tower defense combined. Can also be zoomed in to first person, but I'm not a fan of the view point in either game. It's got no gore, can be splitscreened (1 can, not sure about 2) 2 is free to play, 1 is not, but is cheap enough on sales. No 'storyline' as such, but good for combining figuring out a good way to place the towers you have (you could build for him?) and then using your hero to also do dps in first/third person mode while the towers also do damage. There is gear to think about in regards to bettering your character dps and towers, but it's pretty straight foward.

Thief... Oh damn, yes. My first encounter with Thief series was a demo of Thief in 1998. I was 12 and instantly fell in love with the series. It is my favorite ever, and well... Might not be good for a 7 year old little guy. It's not exactly FPS, and if one wants to fight it will be very difficult :P I wanted to suggest another game, Deus Ex Human Revolution, but then again... little dude won't understand a thing :| I'm no good at suggesting games to children :D Maybe... Try to get him into another kind of shooters, like arcade flight games? FIghters, and stuff, maybe even World War 2 setting. Epic battles. Good arcade games like that would be for instance Dogfight 1942 or game still in Early Access - Flying Tigers: Shadow Over China. They offer customizable difficulty settings, making the game very arcade and easy to fly, so one can focus on destroying enemies.

Little edit: Alice Madness Returns is fun, but also has some dark, dark moments. I won't post spoliers, but later on in the game things get serious... Keyword - Madness :P

Also there is Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD - I don't have it myself, still on my wishlist(missed the sale ><), but the game looks very fun. And that also reminds me of another series. Call of Juarez games. In my opinion the one and only western themed FPS out there. I mean the CoJ 1, Bound In Blood, and Gunslinger. Call of Juarez 1 is fairly old with somewhat wonky controls(at least to me), but subsequent games are much better. Bound In Blood improves greatly on the controls and gives a good western movie like story of love and betrayal. Gunslinger offers the most refined and fun gameplay of all, topping it off with good visuals and more than decent story.

Your poll, there are like 4 games rated R because of violence
Well you know what potato I'm going to vote xD

Portal isn't really FP"Shooter"
But if your son can play it, he's really smart.. Because I remember I played PS back when I was 7
And can't even finish Crash Bandicoot, that game not even a puzzle game :(

Well if you want "friendly" games, try PS1 games
Like Point Blank (Shooter-ish) or Bishi Bashi (everything-ish) + they're local co-op, so you can play with your son! Don't let him beat you :3

I played Fancy Skulls a while ago http://store.steampowered.com/app/307090/

It's supposed to be difficult but I finished it in like 3 hours, and I'm usually terrible at FPSs. Might be good for a kid since violence is low and you have to think a bit about which weapon upgrades you get.

id go with a non shooter to start with keyboard / mouse training tbh. sonics a good platformer to learn to use the keyboard with two hands.

Not an FPS, but I would highly recommend Bastion. I was also going to say Among the Sleep because of how adorable the teddy bear was, but then I remembered the rest and now I think it might be too scary.

I started with Wolfesntein 3D and Doom when I was somewhere between 6-8 and played all of the old school FPSs before I was 12, so I don't think violent video games corrupt a child as much as bad parenting does. Not directed at anyone, just my .02 on the whole violent game side-discussion.

How about Portal/2?
1) Pretty sure its classified as an FPS game
2) One of the highest rated games on steam
3) Makes you think while having fun
4) Has a workshop to let the creative juices to flow
5) Has a co-op option so you can bond and have fun at the same time

Max Payne 1, pretty good game. I don't think this affects a 7 year old, I've been playing wolfenstein since I was 4 and before that I played jack jazz rabbit 2 and I'm still breathing!
