Why would that be?

To stump bots/scripters and/or weed out people who mindlessly enter giveaways, but are so disinterested in the games they are entering that they can't be bothered filling in a captcha?

It's an inconvenience, and will be hated by many (does anyone actually enjoy filling in these things?) but it might be a useful option for some...

Your choice.
On another note Google uses some very smart algorithms to identify bots and prompt a CAPTCHA for suspicious users, some simplified versions of this kind of algorithm are also avaible online I think.
This would leave humans unaffected and punish only bot users.

But login to google does. And algorithm is quite simple - if you are login to google (and google spy on you) - simplified capcha, if not - full version. Don't want it.

No one even talked about login to google. You should learn to read first, then comment. Google uses very advanced anti-bot algorithms, online you can find implementation of the same algorithm under GNU licence, so with available source code and NOT related to google in any way, just inspired to their efficient code.

I only stumbled on it when using the university network. Our proxy was to blame, during peak hours too many students used the search engine from the same IP and triggered their bot-detected-alarm aka captcha.

Don't get it twisted I REALLY do understand the issue with bots. But suggesting I or us fill out some arbitrary captcha to enter too prove we are not some bots scamming. Well, that does not sit well with me. And since you , us, I didn't have to fill one out to be a member of this site (why do you think that is). Why even think it would be a good idea to include it into the coding for members to deal with when entering giveaways?

In very SIMPLE words that even you can understand (I hope):

The system search for suspicious actions, it find something odd? Prompt a CAPTCHA, was it human? No harm done, he will solve it and continue, was it a bot? If it can't solve it will get stuck. GG WP

No phone, no social security number required, no sacrifice to some pagan idol.

Hey little troll, what are you trying to achieve commenting on an 8 months old thread with such offensive posts?
To be honest I have no idea what you are responding to, this was a long, changelling and debated thread back then, it sure didn't need your fruitless troll-like opinions.

My post was a response to Adam and Ryzhehvost that were both having fun driving me mad, it was an heated argument, but nothing like your post, you are just offensive.

Anyway, I'm not taking the bait here, your post is just so full of inaccuracies it must be a failed troll attempt. For your information my field of study includes computer science and I personally worked with semantics reconnaissance software and turing machines, I did my homeworks, you Sir., can you say the same?

In the remote possibility that you are not trolling, I suggest you to hold back from posting further comments and to read the thread from the beginning trying not to skip anything. If you are not 12 years old you should then understand why your offensive posts are both inappropriate and inaccurate.

I'm done here, have a nice day.

They don't want bots to buy thousands of bundles and have key resellers sell those games at full price later on. (Sites like G2A thrive on abusing bundles like that.) If they don't take some kind of measures to prevent bots, they will lose some developers and publishers deals and will have to lower the quality of their bundles. And with so much stuff getting rebundled nowadays for lack of publishers willing to put their games in bundles, we certainly don't want the offer to get any lower.
