Exactly a year ago I asked this same question and discovered and listened to a lot of people's picks and really enjoyed it.
Now I want to ask the same question again, for the people that have joined SG this last year, or just for anyone who discovered a new game soundtrack that they really enjoyed.
And even if you have answered a year ago, and you don't have a new favorite, you are welcome to put the same song again, consistency is great :D
If you can't pick just one, feel free to pick more!

Last time my picks were Hydrogen from Hotline Miami and I Shall Rise from Rise of the Tomb Raider. And while these two are still my favorite, this year I played the remake of the first Mafia, and absolutely fell in love with the 1920s-1940s Jazz music from the in-game radio. I've been using them to go to sleep, or just to chill a lot these past few months. Lost Heaven Radio and WBDS Radio.
And once again, bonus points if it's an original score!

I really like the first half of the Castlevania one. I'm guessing in the game's context, it makes more sense for the song to fade.

Doom did such a fantastic job with their music choices for the game.

1000 Words is great but it could use a remaster. It would be nice to hear a version more clear vocals and a better mixmaster. Maybe there is one already, I haven't checked, but the original one shows its age.

Ori is a masterpiece as a whole, I loved both games so much.
With the Skyrim one, you reminded me of how much I enjoyed the game and now I want to replay it even more.
TLOU music is so gorgeous, especially if paired with the game's landscapes.
Last year, there were a lot of picks for Final Fantasy songs as well. I was never much into the FF games, but I enjoyed many of the songs shown to me from them.

The most accessible final fantasy for me is X: https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/359870/
good history/sountrack and combat system is turn based but there is no limit between turns as in previous versions, XV and VII Remake have gameplay very similar to Kingdom Hearts and it is a more arcade and dunk game buttons than a role-playing game, that's why I didn't like them as many, as games at a graphic level both VII, VIII and IX have been somewhat outdated but I like their role-playing system more than the latest games.

I spent many hours on skyrim and it is a game that, no matter how many times you play it, you always want to play it again, in my case that happened to me with Mirror's Edge, a game that did not have great sales (I remember too Spec Ops: The Line, was a great game but same low sales how Mirror´s Edge) was a benchmark at the time and from time to time time I replay it again.

I plan on replaying Skyrim sometime this year. I played the old version and was really mad at the fact that I couldn't 100% it due to having 25 achievements DLC only, which I didn't have, and you can't even get them anymore unless you want to spend full price on them and have the direct store links.
I recently got the Special Edition and I plan on 100 %ing it.

To be fair, any music from Nobuo Uematsu is great. Though FFX has a special place in me, reason is same, my first Final Fantasy.

Comment has been collapsed.

The same thing happened to me with VIII and for example VII didn't mark me that much, I liked IX and VIII more, they deserve a remake, they are too underrated.

X is very good but its combat system is more strategic since it has a bar with the movements that are going to happen in the combat and they need to interact to continue the combat, this makes it easier since in previous games it used a resistance bar and if you don't attack the enemy, he will keep attacking you, and for this reason there are many people who didnt like X so much.

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, every FF has a fan base who like them most. For combat system, my favourite is the plain old ones like FF III. For story and characters FF X (even X-2) is special to me. There was a leak for FF IX, especially after this fan project it was kinda suspicious. I hope we'll see it one day. For what its worth, I would love to see a FF VI remake though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I liked the combat system of the X, the X-2 improved it but I didn't like the story too much and I never finished it. Taking into account that the Remake of VII has not yet been finished, I find it hard to believe that one of the IX will come out, hopefully it will come out.

Yeah, even FF VII remake took too long after the rumors. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes 10 years later at this point.
I also love FF X-2 combat but we're a minority I guess, people usually don't like X-2.

So let me add a few off the top of my head here, before looking up what I said last year:

so many great ones, so picked a couple deeper cuts.

two worlds - opala (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_1otLI57-o) even though it doesn't really fit the epic fantasy setting of the game.
the entire soundtrack is great though, harold faltermeyer is the man.

dreamweb - died last night (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKWhJIzWgbs) the piano piece that plays when you die. not cool in a point & click adventure but it's still one of my favorite games ever. matt seldon is also the man. (btw, the game is freeware, can be downloaded from the scummvm website.)

you must be old. and one of very few who know/remember it. I don't think a remake would be a good thing (it rarely is), it'd lose its amiga charm and the soundtrack shouldn't be touched either (which they did anyway, I prefer the in-game tracks, though the bonus song on the cd version is great).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, I played it on Amiga 500 or 1200, probably the latter. Sure, many remakes are worse than the original but in this case a simple remaster wouldn't be enough I think. I have a whole list of Amiga games that I would like to see a modern version of. ;-) Not because I want to play the remakes - I can always play the originals on SteamDeck with a few clicks - but because they're so good that I'd like more people and generations to play them.

that would definitely be a benefit, though this being freeware should be enough of an incentive. and I'm not sure why it's not on gog for more visibility, some other free stuff is. one must fall is another glaring omission, discussed elsewhere in this topic.
