I've been on level 5 for a long time now. I've lost level points even though I keep doing regular giveaways, because more and more games are free once or are part of a bundle once. Is it just me or is there a problem with how Steamgifts handles the level? Eventually most games will have been free somewhere and we will have paid for nothing regarding our level.

I thought you don't lose level points if your giveaway was before the game was marked bundled or given away for free. You do lose level points if the price is reduced for the USA steam store. For example: you make a giveaway for a $40 unbundled game in 2017, you gain 40 CV. Then in 2019 the price is reduced to $20 and you lose 20 CV.

Yep, CV loss when price is reduced is real problem, and should be dealt with. Maybe one day cg will have time for that...

There is no problem. When game added to free or bundled list - it's added with a start date. So, if you did giveaway prior to that date - your CV is safe, but if your giveaway was made after that date - your CV is reduced/removed. So, even if all games will become free today - you will still be level 5.
The thing is - games are not added to the free/bundled lists in a timely manner - because it's done manually. So, it's quite possible that game was free in January, you made giveaway in March, got full CV, and then in June game was added to the list, with the start date in January, and you lost your CV. If it was possible to maintain free/bundled lists up-to-date in a timely manner - you would never even get this CV.

See the FAQ

Why did my level decrease?
There are two reasons why a decrease could occur.

Values are calculated based on the current USD prices of games in the Steam store. If a game lowers in price, the value of previously created giveaways will adjust accordingly, and this will be reflected on profiles and levels.
Certain games on our site are flagged as "No Value" or "Reduced Value". This is done manually by our volunteers, and therefore there might be a delay before these values are assigned. For example, a game might be included in a bundle on January 10, 2018. If on January 13, 2018 we flag that game as "Reduced Value", with an effective date starting January 10, 2018 (the day the bundle started), then giveaways created between January 10-13, 2018 would have their value reduced accordingly.

The only reason you would loose CV is if the price on Steam decreased or if you gave the game after the date it was given for free or bundled.
It's not really a problem with how SG handle level it's more because at the rate games are given for free and become bundled the person who handle adding them to the list can't keep up so often it become retroactive. You can always use site like https://isthereanydeal.com/ to check if a game is bundled or given for free, it should give you an idea of the CV you'll get for a game since there are kept pretty up to date.

I feel you, I´ve been level 6 for a long time now and my CV keeps going down and occasionally up even though I´ve created plenty of giveaways since reaching level 6 (though most are reduced CV there are some full CV). Maybe 3 days ago I was at 6.69 and I am now at 6.62.

It's been said above but I am thinking it's not about free games, but games reducing in price year(s) later or being banned/removed which becomes 0 value. Currently the site doesn't have any way to address this since it pulls from steam api.

It could be done I suppose by just making values permanent up to a date in time, but still pulling the past 12 months from the API. Not sure how difficult that would be though.

Granted, you guys may be right about that but even so, my level decreases constantly and at an alarming rate despite giveaways.

As for the graph on free games, as more and more games become free, we'll have a harder time gaining points as time goes by since they never reset to any amounted value in points, even years later and if they've only been free once.

I don't see a problem. Think of your level as a conglomerate measure of how much you have given away and how much you continue to give away.

It is way less effort to give away just enough to maintain your level.

And it is still equal and fair between all members.

They have to keep free games at 0 CV once they go into mass giveaway because people like to abuse systems like this one. Someone could easily grab 20 keys from each giveaway, save them for a year, then give them out as giveaways and get full CV for them again.

The current system is fair to everyone as it prevents this. Okay, it does suck if you get games in bundles that have 0 CV. You didn't get them for free, but the site counts them that way. It's happened to me more than once, but I understand the reason for it.

There are more games released everyday than games given for free, so everything should be fine, don't worry.

How come noone blames the CV system after giving away an unbundled $10 game which he bought 90% off at a reseller?

We'd all have a much lower level if the system was fair and would somehow reward one with exactly what they paid for a giveaway

Somehow, whenever there's talk about losing levels or being robbed or whatever, that's the one solution nobody suggests... :)

Imagine if we had to submit a receipt for each giveaway... :) Paid 2 cents for a key, $0.02 cv... :) Free promotional keys from developer, $0 cv... :)

Eventually most games will have been free somewhere

Close to 25.000 games available at Steam. So, no, only a fraction of those games have and will be free. Not "most games". No need for doom and gloom.

P.S.: Stop worrying about CV and levels and your SG-experience will be much more enjoyable.

We're a decent bit over 30,000, actually. SteamSpy lists Games: 30,698, some other sources list higher [with some claiming we reached 30,000 half a year back]. Purportedly over 9,300 games were released onto Steam in 2018 alone.

So, no, only a fraction of those games have and will be free.

I don't imagine many of us could handle dealing with 9,300 free game promotions in a year, to begin with. :P

Over 30.000 with DLCs, isn't it? Ah, well, I'll just believe you. Really no need to argue about this. The number is absurdly high, if it is 25.000, 30.000 or even more :D

My point wasn't to argue some semi-meaningless number, to begin with, but to emphasize your point that Steam has an absurd number of games (and that the rate of new additions only gets higher each year). :P

There are only two scenarios in which you lose CV in the current SG system, and just one of them is a real issue:

  1. You give away a game that has ALREADY been bundled or given away for free, but it still result Full CV here because Support members didn't have time to change it yet. So, this is not unfair for you: probably you paid a very small price for that game.
  2. This is the real problem that should be face. SG doesn't have a database for the regular game prices, it depends on the prices shown on US Steam store: thus when the price changes PERMANENTLY on the store, your CV will be affected retroactively.

You see then, massive giveaway aren't a direct problem for CV. And if I can make a suggestion: it is nice to see the CV going up, but don't care too much about it. You reached level 5 in an year, so I suppose that you enjoy giving away games. Keep enjoying it, and consider the CV an added bonus. ;)
