I won "The flying dutchman" I had no idea what it was, apparently it's one the worst games on steam. I paid 1300 gems for that and that's around 1,20€ for a game worth nothing. I bought 600 0,03€ backgrounds when the event started so I could afford it, I had a lot of fun with this auction thing.

I won nothing as I see it as a waste. Some of the games that were auctioned off went for more than their non-sale value in gems. So ... just selling my stuff to those desperate enough to get gems for the auctions. That's my strategy. :D

Nancy Drew: Tomb of the Lost Queen. Waiting on this round to get closer to decide what to bid on next. I have a decent chunk of gems from selling emoticons and backgrounds I didn't want anyway, plus what I picked up off the market for cheap earlier.
I'm still only going for things I actually want that'd be "cheaper" to score via an auction, even if I haven't spent a penny. :p
edit: Just got Tales From The Dragon Mountain: The Strix too. ^^
edit 2: The Egyptian Prophecy: The Fate of Ramses
edit 3: Planet Stronghold
edit 4: Cheesecake Cool Conrad
edit 5: Leona's Tricky Adventures - I think I'm out. Nothing left to sell/convert without idling, and I won't have time (not around tomorrow :< ).

Just got Magnetic By Nature (new indie platformer, never on sale) for 2100 gems :D.. Can't wait to play it tomorrow ^^.

Rage Runner with 1500 gems (from backgrounds and emoticons) and I'm happy with this much.
:D
Since I had only 1630 gems, I checked che lower bids and tried to outbid just at the last second... but everyone did the same and I was easily outbid everytime and I immediately (after 10 seconds Steam let you do so) canceled the bid...
So I decided to put the whole bunch of gems I had on one of those cheap games which I actually would play and keep the bid there: I think that if one of the cheap games goes up early enough, there are fewer chances that in the last seconds someone else, who is targeting lower bids, will found that game at the beginning of the list... and that would be a problem because all those games seems to skyrocket to 1600 and over!
This is just a theory though...
EDIT: I have just seen someone winning the same game for 1200 gems, maybe bids are just dropping.

Compared to the first long one, yeah they have been dropping some though there's often upflares near the end of a period.

Ok, I was wrong. I did win a copy of Sacred 3. I'll make my own judgements on if it's good or not. But I now own the entire Sacred series.

I won a badge for participating in an auction. I think I should quit while I'm ahead

It's Deluxe Edition? sounds like I'll try to win this one. But I'm not sure if dev can keep up promise.

Hangeki, but that's a lower bid thing (around 1400-2300), and what I did was put all the gems from junk (about 1400) I had and when that did't work I got a sack for that extra boost. Wound up winning with 510 left over.
Then I aimed for Waves, which cost me about 1100 gems
Raiden III for about 3,100 (I won't be likely to get another sack), then Phoenix force for a similar amount and last is The Waste Land.
Planning on going around 1000k stuff (only cost me a buck each)
Other niche things are at a similar tier, so this might work there, but as far as more popular/AAA stuff.... I wouldn't advise trying. That and I try not to exceed a certain % in real money.

Lol, that auction is useless and just for showing off that you won a game and maybe (mostly) for the badge you get for winning. If the person REALLY wanted the game they bid on in that auction, they're just buy it outright with money or TF2 Keys.

lol you are wrong as a trader with over 2000 trades who knows all about steamtrades and many other sites to get games very cheap (have not put money into steam since 2013 sale) I won Gunhond EX, if you don't know why someone would want that game you don't understand how to trade, or the value of the gems.

Hmmm, not sure if "win" is the correct word, somehow. :)
Don't have any tactics, sorry. :) Had a mountain of duplicate emoticons + backgrounds to grind for gems, and bought another mountain of 0.03 stuff that was worth 80 or 100 gems each. I was lucky to have a lot of unpopular games, because if you don't already have a background/emoticon for a game, you can't see what they will give in gems. :) Guess I could turn all my leftover stuff into gems also, but for some reason I want to keep 1 of everything...
Oh, don't forget - being in place #10 doesn't mean you can expect to win the auction by round 10. When I left this morning I was in place 5-10 for about 20 games, and when I got back about 12 hours later I hadn't won anything. :) If you aren't actively monitoring the auction(s) you want to win, someone's going to bid 1 gem more than you did, and get the game. :)
If all you want is the badge, find something cheap and/or terrible and see how much it's going for right now. Decide if you're willing to pay that much for it. :) If you are, bid 1 more than the current highest bid, and repeat as needed until you're the highest bidder. Eventually someone else will outbid you, so keep watching it and bid more as necessary. If the auction is almost over, and you're still the highest bidder, remember you can still bid more yourself - just in case someone tries to snipe it when you won't have time to do anything about it. :) Good luck! :)

Holy hell the price for sack of gems is really stupid, wouldn't be surprised if it gets to $2 near the end of the auction. Now I regret even more that I sold my gems early :|

I've made a few observations of this event which have enticed me, but the effort required is simply not worthwhile.
There are many with less than 150 total bids on them meaning 2/3 of the people will win by the end. Depending on the game, some of these are as low as 1500 which means it'll continue to drop as more people win.
I had the thought of going through and finding all these games with low entries and simply watching them to see if I could snag a game for a couple 100 gems towards the end. The issue with this, is there are going to be many left over gems and people will be desperate to get anything so I've convinced myself it won't be possible. The thing that discouraged me the most has having to sift through 145 pages worth of games in order to do this, they really should have added a filter for games you own as well as a sort by bid.
In the end, neat event although it was not for me. People are overpaying for games and Steam is getting a huge cut from all the sales on the market so it's good for them! I would have enjoyed it more had I not been working when it started as I would have had a chance to make lots of money at the start with the increasing emoticon prices, but oh well!

The gems will not be 'forced' into use lol they have no expiry date and many people are making boosters with them and they will continue to do so after the event

wait to see what happens with the current trading currency of tf2/dot2/csgo keys, seems steam are trying to make gems the new currency for trading. Also I do not debate that the prices will stabalise, that proves what exactly? You think they will be useless? Okay question time, What is the most expensive booster? How much does it cost in gems? Do you know the answers? I do :) the price will be set and we will see what it is and how exploitable the situation is (or I will lol)

The bidding is more dynamic than you think. I've just witnessed the same top bidder lose 5 times in a row today lol. It says 150 bids, but there are always people who join the bidding in the last minute and take the game. So it's much more likely that those 150 bids won't won't win anything at all.

With Bionic Heart 2, the person who was right above me got sniped twice. Then I got sniped.
Had a bit of fun pushing that person's bid up a bit though before it ended.

Tryst - 1110 gems
Woah Dave - 930 gems
Aiming for one more game, then I'll give away/sell whatever gems I have left.

What did you win, if anything?
What's your tactics to make sure you win?
I'm in line to maybe, potentially, if all goes well, win something in round 10 or so... let's see how that goes :-)
Update: pulled my gems out and sold 1k yesterday, and just put another 1k on the market, I'm left with 122 gems now... meaning I didn't win, and will not win, but would've won if I had left my 2k on the game I was originally bidding on (Prophour23, wishlisted).
I see lots of you were luckier, or just simply better at it. It's amazing what you guys are winning! :-)
