Well, i can tell by experience some of those servers are dead, why keep wasting money on something nobody uses. And about the other servers youre right, EA doesnt know how to treat their users.

In the case of some of them, it isn't the fault of EA, but the services used for the multiplayer shutting down.

Sounds fair, but they could integrate Origin.
Instead of inviting these people to become a part of their community, they throw them out. Not sure what's EA's gain in this.
Edit: Not to mention the uproar, once this "news" makes its way to the gameblogs etc.

Maybe they could, but there isn't a lot of people playing most of those to make the update worth it. Its time, money and people working on something that won't satisfy more than a few players (not to mention most will still rage because such updates would be Origin only, and not their precious Steam).

Origin doesn't actually have its own multiplayer solution ala Steamworks. Pretty much all the Origin API does is achievements. EA obviously use their own servers for most of their games these days, but any theoretical third party exclusive for Origin (which I don't think has happened to date) would have to use a custom solution.

In other words, never.
Well, I don't wish them to die, since many people would lose their jobs, but EA has to change their course of action. All the hate on the internet and the media isn't just plain circlejerking or Steam fanboy talk, there's a fundamental flaw in EA's business practices.

Those people can work on lesser studios, who aren't greedy as EA

Anyone with a wii that wants to play The Beatles Rock Band add :D

I did, but I want the games for single player anyway. The only RTS I played in multiplayer was Herzog Zwei.

I've heard of the game, but I only enjoyed playing Herzog Zwei with my dad using house rules. 40 defenders, then send off 10 guys at a time to attack, taking turns. Not going to get that without him.

What an evil corporation, they're shutting down "F1 2002 for PC"!!!!!!!
Seriously look at the list except for some games, most of the servers shutting down are for games older than your grandmother. Don't see the dick move there. Many dead games so why keep the servers running when you can use the money to newer more active games?
It seems to me people are raging for nothing, as long as EA posts something new people will complain anyway because it's EA.
Comment has been collapsed.
Dude all gamespy games that ARE STILL ACTIVELY PLAYED by people are now ALL on that listed, when it was said "We're working on transitioning those games after the shut down so you'll still be able to play them." That is a 'dick move'as you put it

2002 is old to you? 12 years is nothing, especially on a platform like PC that can support game perpetually if you set it up right. Imagine if studios stopped releasing copies of their movies and TV shows from 2002 and before because they were too "old fashioned" and it cost them too much money to keep putting them out on new formats? Imagine if books became illegible after a decade.
"Don't worry, they're still releasing great movies like Transformers and great books like Twilight!" You'd say.

For a video game 2002 is old yeah. Back then i had fun with some games, but playing them now would be totally different. Especially games like Madden, Fifa, NHL, NBA... every year a new one is coming out. Most of the players will move on to the newest, some will stay on older versions 2013, 2012... but nobody will be playing one from 12 years ago. Many of the players are retired and most teams are obsolete. Movies and books are different, so i don't see your point there it's like comparing carrots and apples.

Games rarely go classic though, they just become obsolete in most cases.

Idk, kinda depends on perspective, to me a good game is always worth playing right down to Pacman.
Comment has been collapsed.
I said most cases. Stuff back from the 80s, well there is maybe 20 or so games that people would still play, I should think. Those are the classics, but stuff like Karate will be forgotten, for good reasons.
Comment has been collapsed.
Guess so but that does go for new games to, if a game is sub par or even pretty good its usually forgotten pretty quick. Like I played a game a week ago that was new and pretty alright, forgot its name already.
But stuff like Donkey Kong(Old) and The Walking Dead(New) usually are remembered no matter the age.
Its all about quality, I will never forget Mario/Doom/Metroid/Diablo/Tetris/etc...I can name crap all day :-D! All old games, hell even stuff like Gex/Crash/Spyro come to mind right away, probably can remember more old then new actually...haha.

Never played it...any good? I actually like to play old platformers still, imo they are better still then the new ones, one genre that really didn't improve(Exceptions would be games like Mario Galaxy that at least tried...).

The first was average at best, the second was mediocre. 3D was awful.

I'm playing it right now, wish it had a higher resolution, not enough of a view.
Comment has been collapsed.
I did look for a resolution update for it, but the one site I would have trusted was with an old news post and a dead link. I'm rather careful when it comes to replacing executables.

long time ago i used this http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/closed-threads/72621-play-starcraft-in-windowed-mode to play in windowed (and it has 2x resolution mode)

I'd get angry, but this shit is why I hate the idea of multiplayer-centric games.

Oh noes they are shutting down littlest pet shop now Im not gonna buy it

Ah. Shame. I could have sworn they already shut down the BF2 stuff.
Though this is why player-hosted servers will remain a pretty vital feature for multiplayer games. Company support doesn't last forever. So much for giving away the older BF titles for free, kinda negates the entire idea~
Edit : Wait wait wait WAIT. Crysis 2? Aww man. That multiplayer was pretty boss, even if there weren't many people playing any more (and punkbuster was still unable to catch anyone blatantly cheating, as per usual).

I just played Battlefield 2: Modern Combat on PS2. The community depresses me so much. Almost nobody has a mic and all that is left, it seems, is mostly Brazilian players. Nothing wrong with Brazilians, but it is a shame how most of the world moved on from the game. I found a website that is actually still alive for the game, it made me so nostalgic again, remembering the community back in the day. :( This game pretty much helped my teens years be a bit tolerable. Random fact, I got my old stats and thought I would share! I surprisingly only have 600 hours total in this game if I combine my alts... I was AWFUL at this game, my KDR is always negative in the alts, this one barely passed it (my try-hard account).

Didn't EA announce a few months back that they'd make sure BF2142 would survive the Gamespy shutdown? So they lied to us? Also, Star Wars: Battlefront II is nowhere near dead: I saw 3000+ online the other day and those were only Steam copies. EA, you've only confirmed how much you suck.

Shutting down NWN servers.... That's gonna hurt. The game is still active, and there are a lot of persistent world servers out there.

While I don't play any of them, I'm still shocked about the amount of games listed.
I guess some of them are actually pretty popular and have active online communities, like BF2.
