As a shooter? Okay
As a first person adventure game with shooting and stuff and social commentary and style? Outstanding :)

Bioshock is the kind of game every little game wants to be like when they grow up.

I have played few months ago, not exactly a FPS, more an first-person-adventure, you shoot enemies, listen to a few tapes with stories, and collect adam. Looks generical, because it kinda is, but I believe the story hides some deep shit. I don't know, since I gave up few hours later.

If you're looking for a challenging game, no. Even on the harder difficulties it's pretty easy. However, the story and atmosphere is one of the best ever in a game. Unfortunately, the Remastered Edition apparently broke a lot of things. Buying it will give you the old versions though, so I recommend playing those.

That does not make any sense to me... How does Bioshock 1 not have a story? It's an awesome one!

I agree. Bioshock 1 in particular had a very prominent story. Not all of it told through words, much of it was told through environmental storytelling, but it had a story that was very important to the game.

At what point should you read the book? Before even starting, or at a certain point in the series? (Haven't played yet...)

I truly don't know why people drool over this series.
The setting was great, but everything else was mediocre to just bad.
The optimization is complete horseshit, the combat's barely ok and the story in most part is pretty uninteresting. Not to mention the level designs that are sometimes just maze-like.

There are good parts to the game, for sure, but otherwise... It's just ok.

I'm guessing you mean that you disagree that there are good parts to the game?
I mean, if you hate it, it's fine. Doesn't matter to me.

I know you probably didn't mean that, but next time you say something like that, give at least a glimpse of context around what you're talking about...

Did the game not have issues with newer systems? Did the game not tend to crash with dynamic shadows? Did the game not have issues with running at a solid framerate even though the hardware was way better?

Is the combat not just the most basic hitscan with almost no impact to the enemies? Is it not just depleting a bar until the enemy falls down?

As to the story, I'm actually interested in knowing what was so good in it other than Fort Frolic and maybe the "twist" that was mostly predictable.

Butthurt much ?

Judging me just because I don't like a game that you like ?

You are probably the kind of SJW screaming for free speech, but when the free speech is against your safe space, you start crying.

But aren't racists like you the one crying for free-speech, and obviously calling for a safe-space because someone called you stupid.

Anyway back to the topic, how much of a couch potato you must be to say Bioshock is Ok and Infinite is a crap, go back to your fucking Fifa beer gaming.

Where the fuck is the racist from ? Judging from nothing again ?

You are just continuing with your non-sense bullshit. Once again, you got butthurt because I don't like a game.

I'm giving my point of view to someone asking for advice. You come insulting me for nothing. Really, just turn off your computer.

What if I don't have any anger, and people have sensibilities issues like...SJWs?

My comment still apply to his comment on Bioshock, not about whether he was racist, but fuck the kinds of couch potatoes on "fuck yeah Call of Duty Montain Dew" BS, they're the reason why AAA became boring shit as one of the rare games savings it's art and cinematography was indeed Bioshock.

I would not go as far as to say that they are masterpieces, but they are good games. And if you enjoy them, check out the games that inspired them. I personally find System Shock 2 to be better than Bioshock, despite its age (System Shock 1, well, not so much. I like it, but it has not aged nearly as well, mostly due to the controls).

I just finished System Shock 1 and it was pretty disappointing story wise (much less interesting than BioShock's story), not to mention those horrendous controls :p I've only just started with System Shock 2 so we'll see about that one.

System Shock 2 is an absolute classic. It's right up there with Half Life 2 (for different reasons).

I will have to see since I'm currently playing it. Though perhaps it's already been hyped up too much for me, since I didn't think Half Life 2 was a big deal either, it was just ok. Couldn't care less for Half-Life 3, I'm waiting on Portal 3 :p

I know some people will hate me for it, but I was only able to enjoy Bioshock when I stopped listening to the tapes. I don't know, they're just not my thing. The first time I tried the game I was decided to listen to all of them, but I stopped midway through because I just didn't have any interest in the game. After a few years I came back and said "screw it", and just skipped through the tapes. Good game with great atmosphere and plot.

I've been playing adventure games for 20 years, but it was only about a year ago when I finally started experimenting with other genres again. It turnes out that I enjoy RPGs with high quality narrative as much as good point-and-click. So the question is: would Bioshock be a good place to give a chance to the FPS genre? The last one I've played was Doom 2, I think :)

Talking about FPS/RPGs, this thread is a pretty good source for options.
Personally, Deus Ex is a good FPS/RPG but it's quite stealth-oriented; it may not be the FPS experience PossiblePsycho looking for.
I would recommend the Mass Effect series if he's looking for a shooter & RPG, but it's 3rd person shooter instead of FPS.

Agreed. As mentioned above, System Shock 2 is a great RPG/FPS crossover as well, and still plays pretty well even though it's old. Just keep its age in mind (although if the last FPS you played was Doom II, I think you'll be ok...I'm an old gamer too [still own a functional Atari 2600, and it's HILARIOUS to hook it up to my big screen and have people over for beers and Atari night], and from that perspective it's really playable).

The Half Life series is not an RPG in any sense...they are all straight-up FPS games, but they are the thinking man's FPS games. From a story and character perspective, I probably couldn't recommend any full FPS series more highly. The first game and its spinoffs are a little dated now, but it's amazing how great it is to still play all of the Half Life 2 games...they've aged incredibly well. The Source engine, alongside the Unreal engine, is honestly just one of the most fluid, flexible, and efficient game engines that anyone ever developed [insert rant about how GabeN owes it to humanity to get off of his butt and develop HL3 for the fans even though it is way more hassle and lower profit margin than just pimping crappy games in his marketplace :D].

I remember the first time I played Bioshock I too was not too amazed (granted, it was the x360 version and I had trouble with controller aiming for some reason), later on when I gave a second shot on the PC I loved it. Great story great atmosphere, the only downside I'd give is that by the end the enemies turn into quite the bullet sponges even with upgraded weaponry, which made some fights drag out (but not more challange as you can't really die).
Bioshock2 was good as well, though it was not as good as the first, granted I did not play minerva's den which everyone regards pretty highly (I have had it for a while, might go back to it)
Infinite also has an interesting setting, though the story is not as awesome but there are a few things that will make you wonder about stuff so long story short I liked it as well. Unfortunately, bullet spongy things happen there as well by the second half.
