It's average, it's definitely not a masterpiece. The first one is the best and it's got some pretty good concepts (freedom vs. slight control from a government figure) and it's sort-of-kind-of a masterpiece, but #2 is sort of meh. Apparently #3 is "alright" but I haven't played it and from what I saw in a playthrough, it's really not the best game I've ever seen. I already know the plot twist in it and it's something that annoyed me as an addition to the game's world, although the Elizabeth DLC was pretty good.

I think it didn't age well, but overall is a good game.

If you wasn't amazed by the first one, you must know that the second it's the same.
Better "playability" and combat, but a story with a very good first part and a not so good 2nd part. Infinite is a ripoff of that 2nd part and it's casualized and simple in every way (thats why it was a success, by the way)

Yeah I think it's good. Shooting feels kinda weird but everything else is great.

Bioshock is a great game. Maybe average as a shooter, but so is any other shooter if you disregard the narrative experience and atmosphere, which are this game's strong points.
Bioshock 2 doesn't really shine in any particular way compared to the first, but it's okay.
Bioshock Infinite is a good game (if you ignore the looking through trash mechanic leftover from the previous games), and I hear the DLC is great, haven't played it yet myself. :)

To the people who dislike Bioshock:
Hello. Please stop disliking what I like.

To put it simply as others said: Yes. More than good in my honest opinion.

I was also not too impressed with it at first, but once you reach a certain point in the game it becomes a really great game. Like others said, as a FPS it's not that great, but as an experience it's pretty amazing.

Yes. And also get system shock games. They are the grandfather and father of the bioshock series and also awesome games with a very gold history...

Bioshock was a pretty good game that was a pretty poor spiritual successor to System Shock 2. The twist especially had a lot less impact if you'd already played System Shock 2.

As a shooter, the first two are… acceptable. More like clunky. But the "magic" system is decent and it has a good atmosphere if you like claustrophobic horror-lite stories (and never played any System Shocks, because BioShocks are a tad watered down compared to them… okay a LOT watered down, no pun intended).
The third, I have no idea. I kinda gave up on the franchise halfway through the second game. It has a bit of a preachy attitude when it comes to how it tries to tell some kind of vague moral to the player about human nature and how societies devour themselves and whatnot.

The original BioShock game is a masterpiece and in my top 5 of best games of all times. The world, the atmosphere, the characters and the story are amazing, the gameplay (which is still pretty decent) and everything else is secondary. But it's mostly a narrative franchise, if you can't be bothered to pay attention to what's going on you'll probably think it's pretty mediocre.

I personally didn't like it when I played it (which is a while back by now). The combat was average at best, it has quite a few bugs and the levels felt pretty much the same all the time (but this was a couple years ago (I think), so I may just not remember correctly). I personally don't understand why people say it's such a great game all the time. It's average at best. I can see why some people like it, but it's far from the masterpiece people claim it to be...

I hear some rumors and reviews about Bioshock games but never play it until last year. Now I play Bioshock 2 (first was finished in January) and I can tell what this is very good game series, no matter their age.) I think everyone should try it.)

Yeah, fantastic series. Take your time with it, and treat it like an experience rather than a challenge to blaze through. The audio recordings add a lot to the story also, I highly recommend listening to all the ones you find.

It's both great and overrated, depending on what you're looking for.
The world and atmosphere is very intricately built. The story is pretty much lifted from Ayn Rand, so it's quite literary, which is what most people rave about. The gameplay is meh.

If all you care about is gameplay, then don't bother. If you want an awesome atmospheric world, absolutely go for it.
