Hey everyone. Up for another crazy question?

I wouldn't be surprised if this question was already asked before (sorry if that's the case) because I usually ask myself this whenever I play a really good game. This time, it's Fire Emblem: Awakening that made this thought pop in my head again.

So yeah. If you can only play 5 games forever, what will those be?

Here are the side parameters to benefit the question:

  • This question only concerns video games. It doesn't include tabletop games (board games), physical games (like paintball), and etc. (Kinda obvious, but some might get confused).
  • Servers will forever be up for online-reliant games, however, the player base will still change according to its popularity.
  • Every bug will be fixed on chosen game/s.
  • Any game, on any platform is allowed.
  • You can mod your chosen game/s.
  • Feel free to add stuff to benefit your chosen game/s. (e.g. Check my Monster Rancher 4 choice)
  • Expansions are allowed on chosen game/s as long as the expansions require the base game to play.
  • To make things a little easier, announced games until the end of 2015 are allowed.

That's about it. If you think some parameters should be removed/ added, feel free to comment on it.

Here's the list that I came up with off the top of my head, in no particular order of preference.

  • Monster Rancher 4 provided that I get all the discs needed to unlock all monsters
  • Elder Scrolls: Skyrim
  • DOTA2 (I'm screwed if DOTA3 pops up. C'mon Valve, no need to work on those 3s.)
  • Civilization V
  • Portal 2 (maybe, I can't think of a good 5th choice)

There you have it. Thanks for reading and a lot more for answering :D

Agreed :) Played it about 6 times through right now and still not tired of it in the least. I do start feeling guilty for all my other great not being played though :D

Monster Hunter 3(U)
Dark Souls
Fire Emblem: Awakening (also played it and loved every second, wouldn't mind getting back to it any time :D)
RPG Maker VX Ace (not 100% a game, but it's on Steam and it technically contains an unlimited amount of games ;p)
Euro Truck Simulator 2

I would probably throw in 2 or 3 MMORPGs like WoW or AION, other than that TF2 and Dota2 + maybe C&C Generals

Good thing this is only hypothetical =)

None, none, none, none, and none. Sorry, but no game is worth that no matter how good it is.

  • Dota 2

  • Skyrim

  • Stepmania

  • Rusty Hearts(provided bugs are fixed, active development returns and a big rebalance patch will be delivered)

  • Something with ton of ugc. Would it be considered cheating if I choose an engine and get all the games that require it to play?

  1. Total Annihilation (easily moddable, infinite fun, explosions)
  2. Deus Ex (old Unreal engine FPS/RPG -- should be highly moddable, though I never tried on this one)
  3. Team Fortress 2 (Source engine game -- fairly moddable, always fun multi-player FPS)
  4. Sim City 2000 (with the Urban Renewal Kit) or Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 (which is pretty much what I started making with SCURK anyway)
  5. ...don't know, but I'm tempted to go with either a very modern Unreal engine-based game or the Quake engine. Or maybe Super Meat Boy.

(Strangely, my favorite game of all time does not make the cut. Though I love it, it's not one I could play repeatedly or easily mod -- Grim Fandango.)
