So...what was your favorite one?

Mine sure was the Might and Magic series, Dungeons of Avalon and Eye of the Beholder.

I am still kinda sad that games like this are almost dead. LoG was a nice try, but I did not like it that much (mostly because of the magic system and the real time aspect).

Well... but if you like these kind of games you should have a look at the current Indiefort. There is a beta (game is almost finished according to Dev) of "Heroes of a broken world" inside, which is pretty much an oldschool Dungeon Crawler with roguelike elements mixed with Heroes of might and magic. I am totally sucked into it and I think everyone who likes those old games will like this one, too. The game is currently also on greenlight and Dev said that everyone owning the game already will get a Steamkey if the game gets greenlit.

So...if you are interested you really should visit here or buy it from Gamersgate or directly from the devs site.

I remember playing almost all the Might and magic games, they were pretty great.
I loved one of the card game from one of the games (cant remember what number it was), I spent more times at Inns playing that rather than completing quests xD.

Arcomage. I think it was introduced later on M&M VII. Not sure atm.

I didn't really have much that I remember on the C64, but I think I might have owned one of the Gauntlet games. Granted, the series lacked RPG elements until Gauntlet IV for the Mega Drive, but still plenty of dungeons. :P

I started playing games more in the Windows 95 era, so in terms of dungeoncrawlers, I'd have to go with Might and Magic VI and perhaps Stonekeep. I have played the Eye of the Beholder games before, though, and I still have a few of the gold box D&D games.

I upvoted that greenlight game, but I have to say that the monster designs look rather childist.

I've been thinking about picking up Stonekeep off of GOG... Hearing a few of you folks talk about it is making me strongly consider it.

Stonekeep was quite an interesting approach in terms of graphics.

And yes, the monster designs look like they come from early JRPGs, but that doesn't really bother me.

Dungeon Master II - The Legend of Skullkeep is easily my favorite game of that type. But Black Crypt, Dungeon Hack, the Dungeon Master series, and the Eye of the Beholder series were all awesome!

Personally, in newer games, I was a huge fan of Legend of Grimrock. It's actually the first game of this type I ever managed to finish!

You and your ancient platforms. Although most of them came out before my time, I did play a bit of Dungeon Keeper. It was very fun from what I can remember.

Really makes a guy feel old when people refer to the computers I grew up playing as ancient platforms... XD

Amiga forever! :D

Although Dungeon Keeper is really a lot of fun it's a bit different from what I am talking about ^^. But I am sure you played some Legends of Grimrock :o

Hmm, had an Apple 2, but most of those old games were on every platform. If I had to pick the most fun series hmm, Wizardry, also Might & Magic, Ultima, Bard's tale, plus whatever I've forgotten. Wouldn't want to choose just one favourite, they were all great.

One thing I wouldn't have patience for nowadays though is drawing maps. :)

Yeah I never was a fan of drawing maps.

Never tried Wizardry, but hell...what a franchise. Just checked it on wiki.

Good question, I was an Amiga player so would have to say "Legend" by Mindscape.
I remember playing the demo for 20 hours+ even before I bought the full game.

Ultima III and IV on the C64 were amazing at the time =D

It used to be an extremely somber experience, carrying one of your dead party members back to Lord British's Castle to be resurrected ...

Skullkeep was amazing! Eye of the Beholder is high on my list as well...I can still waste waaaaaaaaay too much time puttering around with those games on Dosbox.

Trinner is the winner. I will add you on steam and ask you for your gamersgate account.

For everyone who didn't win. The Indiefort bundle is 1$/€ on gamersgate, quite a steal, you might want to get it.

I remembered _Elvira: Mistress of the Dark_, hehe. More of a click-and-point adventure game but it had first person perspective with the 90 degree turns etc

I liked LoG, but there is not much in character variety... Loved Wizardry 8 so much, thinking about playing it again. Afaik most of the old games didn't have a map... so i'm not even bothering playing them. HoaBW looks very promising though, probably i'd buy it on steam.

Hired Guns

May be the favorite to name from old times but I played the SSI series for Dragonlance and Eye of the Beholder games much more. There really are countless titles to name. Perihelion, Fate Gates of Dawn, ...

The thing is, there are many new indie titles out there that are close to those games we loved back in the day. I loved every minute of Legend of Grimlock. Similarly Avadon, Avernum and Geneforge series might work quite well for fans of old SSI works.
