Here's the rule change page.

What do you think?

The recent 94% discount for XCOM2 comes to my mind, in the future that will be capped at 90% :<

That is interesting, thanks!

Didn't know there were rules like that, wonder what the reason behind that is...
I assume 100% discount can still work or can't the no longer give games away for free then...?

Yeah I guess (hope) free games will still be possibile... I wonder what's the reason as well, one would think the growing competition would drive Steam to do better sales, instead they cap discounts :s

Yeah, not sure why they decide on this and hope the 100% discount, since it's the same as free, will still go else that would be sad :(

If a dev wants to get around it all they have to do is price drop before the 90% sale?

I guess they could, but will they? :p

You can also you bundles to get below that, 90% base discount + 75% bundle discount for total of ~97%.

I don't think any costumer will enjoy it.
Even before this change, Steam increased the minimum price (to 0,39€).

I can undestand minimum price better, like, they have to ensure a minimum return value for a transaction or something...

Yeah but then they should give an extra discount to people who pay with Steam wallet...

After seeing new 1$ releases with a 1% discount, I'm all for min. 10% discount. But what does this mean for bundles when you own certain products? You could raise the discount beyond 90% and save a couple of bucks. Don't like it.

Quoting: "It is not possible to discount a product by more than 90% or less than 10%."
I was thinking the same when reading you, but it seems they just took it into account.

It's not actually new rule, it's been there for years.

Looking at all the rules it seems that they're targetting publishers who just set the base prise enormously high and keep running 97% discounts or something similar. I've seen a few titles like that which were obviously meant to boost library value. As other people mentioned it should still be possible to simply lower the base price before a sale(you just can't increase it)

In the end it's simply another anti fraud measure that just hits genuinely generous publishers doing bigger sales as a side effect.

Edit. Anybody knows how does that apply to package sales which combine package discounts and product discounts? Theoretically it's still possible do do 99% off this way in which case the whole change is pointless as the ones trying to cheat the system will be able to do so with little effort(for a single package) while normal publishers handling lots of games probably wont' bother with such tricks

A good thing I see is about 28 days that have to pass between discounts.

No more new asset flip games coming out costing like 10-50$ and doing 10% discount at releases just to do 50% or 75% if the sales in first few weeks are bad.

Or with some good games no more 50% discount week and 75% discount week after that or something like that just because they want to hit 2 different sales/events.

Yeah, seen an early access game that cost maybe €30, had a 75% off, while also being in a bundle days after its release. That doesn't sound genuine at all.

Happy cakeday :P

Yeah I wish they would ban all fake games and asset flip games etc.

They're like invasive weeds invading every platform and no one is able to do anything about it. Cut off one head and a sock puppet account will grow in its place. With a platform as huge as Steam, they can't manually check every game, and shovelware "developers" are crafty enough to get around algorithms. I wish they gave users the ability to tag a game as shovelware, but then again, review bombing is a thing so users can't be trusted.

-98% discount bundle at the moment:

In fact this exact bundle was once sold for 2 cents (price glitch?):

I'm just glad they're getting rid of those under 10% deals bc their main purpose is just to alert wishlisted folks without providing a good discount.

If the XCOM 2 was given away at a 94% discount, then no one bothers the publisher to reduce the face value of the game and sell it at 80%, which will be cheaper than 94% of the old price...nothing prevents the publisher from selling copies of the game at a price that suits them.
I had a game in my wishlist that cost a few dollars, but I was not satisfied with a 50% discount :), as a result, the price for it increased sharply and now even a 90% discount for me will be a significant waste of money...I just removed it from my wishlist.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/431240/Golf_With_Your_Friends/
it is clear that the value of currencies changes over time, but some games even after a decade do not change in price, and here the Golf With cost at the start of sales the same as it is now with a discount of more than 50%

It is not possible to discount your product for 28 days following a price increase in any currency.

good, this will prevent predatory practices
