Hi SG,

After the recent discussion, updates to the point system are now live. They are as follows:

  1. Users receive 5 points every 15 minutes.
  2. The point cap has been increased from 300 to 500 points.
  3. The maximum number of points to enter a single giveaway has been decreased from 100 to 50 points.

I think these adjustments will provide a number of improvements for the site. However, I'll keep an eye on user feedback, and try to make sure the changes are working as intended and meeting the needs of the community.

I've seen a public 8 hour giveaway lvl 5+ that had 5 entries so far. After 8 hours!
Definitely seems people flock to the big games, leaving smaller games for card-farmers.

Don't think that was the intention, was it?

I fail to understand why would you want to dictate the end time for giveaways others are making?

This update is designed for little active users to once a day could come and join in all the giveaways.

It is the first step to make SG points tradable ;)
Gimme 10 steam cards or some games and I give you my 500 points I banked in longterm giveaways !

Interesting changes. Too soon to say if it is good or not.
For now - less entries for sure in quick giveaways.

PS. i think that you should get some extra points for creating giveaways.

Thank god... maybe now people will not enter for every single thing they see. This with scraping bot users will make SG much nicer IMO

while I see how you may think that, to be honest, personally, now I cant even come close to entering a lot of giveaways for games I actually want (which are the only ones I enter anyways) and believe me I don't ever enter GAs for random games. This is more likely when there is a bundle with a couple of WLed games - especially when they are high value games. Imo it would be better if created giveaways also played a role in point distribution - if nothing else to offer a better sense of fairness.

Dunno i just spent all my points... and in last 6 months i barelly enterd any GA, now there are much less entries since people seem to be only entering for stuff they want and bots are gone. If you ask me it's all fantastic.

So now the points are generated continiously every 15 min (up to 500), not as a % of every GA created?

About the 1hs GA, i think giver should have the choice of making the ga as long as they pleased.

Great news. It's good that the games I wishlisted will have less entries. Before there was too many points and most of entries was from card farmers and game collectors. It was not good. Now more people will join giveaways of games they really want to play.

I disagree entirely. When a bundle drops, there will be a number of giveaways for the same game and you won't be able to enter them all.

Permalink

It's not a problem. If I don't have enough of points, I will leave the giveaways that ends later. Or I will enter just the ones will higher level. Until now I entered every level and had almost always 300 points.

I bet you you will waste the same amount of time micromanaging giveaways as you did entering giveaways normally before.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Neither will everyone else, and some people who would have entered just because they had extra points to spend might prioritize other games and not enter any at all.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's the idea. You're not supposed to be able to enter them all. You're supposed to choose the ones you want most and have the best odds and enter those.

Because if you can enter them all so can everyone else, and that includes people entering them simply because they have surplus points. This site has never been about being able to enter all the giveaways you want - hence the old 300 point cap - but that cap's been meaningless lately due to the overwhelming influx of points.

Unless you got some really below-radar stuff there people will still flock.
It's lower-valued items that get abandoned.

Left for the card-farmers picking really. If I look at my wishlist most have high entries. Recommended? Graveyard.

Fixed point gain is like fixed interes rates: it's the definition of speculation.
Please consider rolling back to previous system, maybe adjusting it. I don't know, maybe with adding some diminishing returns after a certain threshold of points per 15 minutes?

result is that when there are a lott of good giveaways (like today) you cannot join all the giveaways you want
For example: Wargame: Red Dragon cost 30 points
Game is given away (result of humble monthly) 6 times an hour, you get 20 points an hour
Hmm no chance to join once for this one game

My expectations are that I will win less games, Time will tell

Brilliant. I used to enter maybe several GAs a day, but sometimes went on entering spree when interesting games were bundled. Looks like these days are gone. But oh well, I guess, those fragile individuals that suffer immensely if they, god forbid, have spare point left at any moment of time, should be at peace now.

I have only 2 questions

1 - why wasnt there a poll ? I thought you've added that functionality for these ocations and such changes ?
2 - and have you seen the suggestion of min giveaway time limit increased to 12 hours at lest. And are you considering it ?

P.S.
I lied =)

3 - will the points from deleted giveaways return to entered players ?

1 - It was discussed on the SG Patreon page, without any real impact, but a few of our counter-suggestions were implemented in the end, or the solution would have looked a lot worse (original idea was 1p to enter every giveaway, among other things).
3 - This has been an issue for two years, but with the new changes it's critical to fix it soon. Whether it will happen is anybody's guess.

Ok, actually makes sense to discuss with the patreons...
As a whole i think the new system can be better, we just need a week or two to really test it out.
And i hope to see some bundles with 40p+ titles in it, like a stress test =) But we'll just have to wait and see...

original idea was 1p to enter every giveaway, among other things

LoL, I thought of bringing that up as a joke idea together with only 1 point available per day xD

Can you give some more details about the original idea? Very interesting to hear.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is the original suggested idea by cg (hope it's ok to post it here)

  • Every giveaway is 1P to join.
  • When a giveaway is created, all users receive 0.05 points (5% like the old system, but of the new '1P' value, so generally much lower).
  • Users are capped at 20P.

I'm pretty happy it turned out better than this, at least, but the fixed points generation is worse than dynamic IMO.

woo, that would have been something...

never understand why approaching it so radical, just a reasonable regen-reduction would have been totally enough as a first step

funnily enough that cap would have filled 7+ times per day, no real benefit

Now it's max 50p, so 'only' 2.0 hours ¯\(ツ)/¯
EDIT: Actually you're right, my bad. 2.5 hours for 50p. But you said 60p so it confused me...

10.10 itll be 7 months without single win. 7 months of entering for clearly nothing. So tbh i dont care about any changes on SG :D only interesting thing for me is why CG cant add on STEAMTRADES at least fkkk 1 security feature.
on SG trilion changes but at least rewrite 1 to 10 lvl or add $100 limit seems to hard, scammers, fake reps, alts, 10iq users everywhere

5 points every 15 minutes? That's really slow point regeneration.

What was it before this update?

Permalink

It was dynamic, point value of created giveaways generated points for all users. I think 5% of the point value was given to users, not entirely sure about the number.

Was a perfect system.

You use to get 5% of the value of the giveaways created every 15 minutes. This could be a small number when there are few giveaways created or a large number when a lot of giveaways are created, like during the Humble Monthly. During the Humble Monthly, it was not uncommon to see 50-100 points added every 15 minutes.

I think we had way too many points before, but it was good because the system was dynamic and gave you points in relation to the value of the giveaways being created. Now we only get 5 points every 15 minutes no matter how many giveaways are created which creates problems at times when there are very many or very few giveaways created.

See my comment here for a better explanation of how I feel about the points system.
