Like most, I appreciate it when people bump my threads. It helps others notice the thread, and as a result there are more people commenting (other than the bumps) and more people entering giveaways. With that said, seeing many generic "bump" posts in the message notification list is less pleasant. A simple (and probably unoriginal) solution is to bump-reply one of the comments instead of the OP. Is this a good idea?

Should "bump" posts be replies to the OP or to some random comment in the thread?

Bump the OP. The thread starter expects the notification spam, or he/she wouldn't ask for the bump.
Bump a random comment. Have mercy on the OP!

yes it is a good idea, I used it in several of my topics. A lot of people still bump OP, but quite a few bump comment instead makig it easier to read other thingies ;)

I think it is most useful for those event threads that last for weeks though. Shorter threads probably don't see as much benefit from it.

I like the idea. Keeps it clean. Sadly, it depends heavily on the whole community recoginzing this "rules". And I think there will always be a significant fraction of users that just post random "bump"s even if the OP asked specifically not to, and it becomes a mess all over again.
So +1 for the idea, but I don't think it's viable.

So if we bump the reserved first post, is that OK ?

Also bump-replying someone else's comment may be easier on the OP, but that doesn't really solve anything. The spammy notifications just get redirected to a random other poster instead.

Bumping the reserved post (other than to demonstrate the concept) would miss the point - reduce the OP notification spam.

As for the second point, I don't think that getting an one "bump" for a comment is comparable to an OP getting dozens, and sometimes hundreds, of bumps.

Ah damn you. :D

That's why you (no, not you, me!) should first read the comments, then post...

Now my msg is just another generic bump :(

I'd prefer that, and if people didn't want it to be abused.. then maybe allow it to only be used once every x hours. Though who knows how much work that is.

I liked, and I think I suggested, implement a "Bump" button but apparently it wouldn't be a good solution.

that way people can just bump completely irrelevant discussions to the top, the way it is currently we at least see what has been talked about last :)

tho maybe it would be possible in the end after all :P

Well you can still bump any discussion to the top by posting on it, a bump button just make the comment section less cluttered

Yeah, but if you necro threads without good reason- or even have the unfortunate circumstance to comment after someone does so, you're risking a blacklist [because few people like unnecessary spam]. While that's not an ideal situation on its own, the other side of the coin is that without any downside you're likely to see a TON of trolling going on as far as bumping old threads goes.

As long as only the OP can [bump button] their thread, we're far less likely to see too many issues with the inclusion of an integrated bump function. But then, the real benefit of a bump function is that the OP doesn't have to feel bad about self-bumping- but then again, that's as likely to lead to spammy bumps as useful ones. So, it's a bit uncertain how it'd all turn out, and given that the OP already can post-bump, it feels a bit unnecessary an attention for development.

So, not really expecting to see things change any.

The button can be disabled if the last comment is older than 1 week. This would prevent silent necroing and would keep the thread clean from all the bumps.

Bump and meow. I know cat gifs could be considered generic, but I have a hard time thinking outside of my genre.

This is definitely not a generic cat gif :-)

In any case I love cats and have no issue with practically any cat gif.

Why not add a "bump" button at the end of a topic.
If you don't want to say something, just click the button.

I use a forum for subtitles that works like this. Also there should be something like a "limit" like every person can only bump evey 1h or something. (this also works in the trade-section)

I would be confused (at first) if I got a random "bump" notification. I would say it's up to the OP what they prefer, just provide guidance and the folks that actually read will follow through.

How about this: a bump button which every user can only use once per thread, including OP (to prevent abuse bumping). When you already bump the thread, click the button again will show a list of users who bump the thread.

What if you could pay GA credits to keep your post on the top of the list for a certain time period? Like, one credit per second?

I usually bump a thread if the thread-poster asked for it, the other times it's usually on a whim. I've seen all kinds of users on the website and I can kind of understand why some don't like seeing mass generic 'thanks' or 'bump'. It feels weird thinking about this.

I have a random question but since you want your thread to be bumped here i go.
How do you guys put the grey 'box' in front of some chunk of text that can only be read while hovering the mouse on it ?

Trump ? (hell no!)
