I see quite a few people posting angry comments in threads they consider to be worthless trolls, aka shitpots. Instead of commenting there and bumping these threads to the top of the forum, how about staying out and letting them sink to oblivion?

Update, Oct 30: A good way to avoid the temptation to comment on shitposts is to hide them instead. Thanks Praxa for noting that ESGST has this option. Here's how to do it:

  1. If you don't have ESGST script installed, get it here
  2. After installation, click the ESGST button at the top of the page to open the script settings
  3. Scroll to Discussions (section #4) and enable both "Discussion Filters" and "Enable the option to hide discussions"
  4. When you see a discussion that you don't want to waste your time on, click the Eye icon to hide it. You can always unhide it from the Hidden Discussions management panel (open the script settings and click this button)

I used this script for a while, but it doesn't allow editing or managing the ignore list and this was a problem.

I wonder what people would think of a silent comment feature where you could choose to not bump the thread when you comment. That would be kind of interesting for a few different situations. Sometimes you just want to say something to 1 person that isn't important to anyone else (or off topic) and don't need the entire thread bumped for everyone to see.

That's a very good suggestion which deserve a thread in the Bugs & Suggestions forum.

In the meanwhile, I think I'll just avoid such bumps by quoting the post I want to comment to in another thread which is worthy of a bump (and which has a post by the same user).

You can create a thread if you feel up to it. I'm kind of lazy and don't want to deal with all the comments and debates that will come with it. I have a long backlog I need to work on. I already spend more time on here than I do playing my games and I need to fix that :)

And I already got involved :(

At least if the thread blows up I can pick and choose who I want to talk to and not be flooded with hundreds of comments from angry people. That is now on you, thanks for saving me from the suffering :)

I'm not a very talkative person and like to stay out of most debates on SG.

all these bump issues would die if cg added a "thread creation date" sort order for the forums and/or a built in setting to hide threads.

I think you can achieve that with one of the scripts posted here + TamperMonkey, as far as I remember it's also possible to automatically hide the threads of people on your BL, so that's useful too.

I use this one to sort discussions by the date posted. I haven't payed attention to bumped threads in almost a year. I just highlight the ones I want to go back to or reference back to them in my messages from when people reply to my comments.

I guess we just need something like the 4chan's 'sage', so that we can voice our oh-so-angry opinions without bumping the thread.

My immediate instinct would be to say that we don't need anything on this site to be like 4chan, but if that's what this feature does, then it would be a good addition.

Well, 4chan's /b/ is well known for being the 'shithole of the internet' and I won't argue with that, but the other boards are less cancerous (as far as I know).

To be honest, sage makes more sense because of the way 4chan works. Each thread has a limited number of comments that can be created in it, so posting 'sage' actively hurts the thread - not only it doesn't bump it, it also uses up one of the comment 'slots', so that the thread will die faster.

Actually /v/ is the shithole of the internet. Maybe also /k/.

People love to be angry, and they love to show off what they believe. They'd rather the thread atay up so everyone can see their comment where they disagree.

You're both right. There are different kinds of people. Some people also like to feed the fires. Maybe it makes them feel like they have some control over something. Maybe they're just plain bad.
Personally I think these shitposters or misogynists who think they are funny by marginalizing such a topic by making threads like these are a cancer to communities and societies.
