Yea they definetely did a good job there. I remember as well how I amazed I was not only with the visuals but especially with how the water behaved and with the wave physics.
Actually I was very lucky in how I got to own this game. I had a friend back than who's place I was visiting one day. That time an uncle of him went there for a visit as well and wanted to make my friend a present, so he bought him Wave Race, knewing he owned a Nintendo console. What he not knew was that what he had bought a Nintendo 64 game while what my friend had was a Super Nintendo. Fortunately for me the guy was real nice and instead of bringing it back to where he bought hid he decided that I could have it when he heard that I had the fitting plattform for it. Don't think I would have gotten that one otherwise. ^^

I bought my copy on some insane sale just before summer vacation of 1998. Initially I wanted to buy WCW vs nWo World Tour or Tetrisphere, but when I saw Wave Race for a quarter of the full price, I grabbed it instantly.
While I eventually got WCW vs nWo World Tour some time later (and played it for hundreds hours) ,sadly, I've never purchased my own copy of Tetrisphere.

Actually it's from Divinity II: Developer's Cut, but i can`t see the difference because i didn't play the original game.

overall style reminds me of Panzer General, but this doesn't nearly look tanky enough.
So I guess it's Fantasy General, which uses the same game engine ?

Oh wow, there is a fantasy version of Panzer General? Awesome, Panzer General was my big brother's first game when he got his PC back then.

I wanted to try it back in the day, but never picked it up. Also, thanks to Agaster's pick I've recently refreshed my memories of flying sims.

The graphics were bleeding edge at the time (like everything by Psygnosis), and the game was hard as feck but pretty enjoyable.
