My sympathies. I've been digging through Japan-exclusive JRPGs since the first hint, but even the non-sci-fi ones seem to be quite keen on doing their intros in space, with spaceships and suchlike. I gave up after watching about a dozen intros. ;j

Somewhat close, aye. You learn a bunch of 'runes' throughout the game and you draw them on the screen to cast spells (which is mildly inconvenient in combat, but hey it looks spiffy). Also one of the earliest games to let you have your doors slightly ajar, without opening or closing them all the way.
