I've been away from Steamgifts for a few years, so apologies as this has almost certainly come up in the past. I wanted to create a giveaway for the new Tomb Raider game since it was on sale on steam. But I'm having a lot of trouble doing this. I can't figure out how to buy the game so it goes to my inventory so that I can gift it to someone. Is there another way I can buy this to give it away? Am I just doing it wrong? Any info is appreciated!

You can no longer buy gifts and store them into your inventory. You can read about it here.

You will need to add the winner on Steam and buy the gift to send directly to them. If you wanted to do this, you would need to probably set the giveaway to end a considerable amount of time before the sale ends to ensure you can make contact with the winner and deliver the gift within the time frame.

You would also need to make sure the giveaway is set to the region you reside in to prevent any regional price differences that would prevent you from sending the winner the game. I tried finding the thread on it, but to no avail. This person had the problem though.

I was in a similar dilemma (check my last 2 gibs) one was region free for which I had to pay extra and buy a key from fanatical to make sure the guy gets the game. After learning my lesson I created a region restricted giveaway (read descriptions too) and mentioned that I'll add the winner and buy them the gift but if they fail to accept my invitation before x day I'll have to delete the giveaway

You should ask for a reroll in cases where the winner don't accept your invites and don't answer to contact tries.

Due to SG's seven day acceptance rule, and the fact that most Steam sales only last about a week at most, it's rare that you get the opportunity to do a reroll before you have to delete the giveaway due to no longer being able to gift the game [at its sale price], even before you factor in longer giveaway durations.

Meanwhile, staff indicated that they supported deletions based on that matter after the change occurred, and I haven't seen any indication that they've changed their perspective on it since. As such, noting the time restriction and moving to deletion if necessary should still be the most suitable way of approaching things.

Good point. I haven't thought about sale time and that the next winner should also have 7 days to accept his win.

I was looking at SteamDB recently as the topic of gifting arise and I was surprised to see AUD just below Euros, does that mean Aussies can send to the RoW apart from EU? Its out of my curiosity. Cheers, Cruse~ ^_^

It depends on the game, not the currency valuation. Some games are cheaper in certain regions and some are not.
For example for me Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice is cheaper by 65% than the base price, i.e. price of US. That limits gifting my friend in only 12-15 countries. While Witcher 3 sells at base price at my steam region, so I can gift the game to anyone in the world except New Zealand and Japan.

I looked at various games with AUD in mind and seems like you can gift or receive gift from your European friends for most of the games . But you can't gift them Crash Bandicootâ„¢ N. Sane Trilogy at the moment for example. Looking at common pattern, the countries that most likely can't receive games are Japan and New Zealand.

Thank you for the input, indeed, it seems the region gifting is even deep and more confusing than I think it already is. Hahaha We are all just at the mercy of Steam's region policy. And the prices and regions can vary at times as mentioned by veebles; devs/pubs setting the variables for their games. Cheers~ ^_^

Well not that complicated per say. You can gift game to regions where the game is cheap but not to the countries where game is expensive by more than 10% than AUD. Look at image below.

I recommend you adding Steam Database Add-on. It helps a lot.

And if you are from EU(like I am) you can gift the game to 99.999999999999999999999999999% of the planet Earth
Why are europeans getting shafted by most in the world-almost everything is cheaper anywhere else Steam, fanatical,Humble,GMG,Gamesplanet & others are ALL more expensive for EU then the rest of the world)-NOT FAIR!

I feel sad for you and also the Japanese. But look at the bright side, all the tax has made other things more accessible to you guys.

I think thats really helpful however, i am not trying to add any plugins. I'll certainly remember about this and it was mentioned many times here too. Will take a further look when I need it. Thank you very much. The complication comes when you have to determine each games individually rather than a store wide policy like before. Too bad I missed the time when gifts are region free. XD

That game in question was What Remains of Edith Finch Seems like the new change is so much of a hassle more than merely a raise in currency exchange. Cheers, Thanks~

Welcome back :)
Everything has been already said. but as a

TL;DR -Version: Must be a friend. Refund if declined. No more inventory.

OffTopic: The price/value of that game currently is amazing. Would be happy to see your giveaway ;)
As these offers are time limited, bit of a problem but well making a giveaway which fails >>> no giveaway at all.

I found this out when trying to buy a game for a friend's birthday. I hadn't used the feature often. Now I just buy the games on Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle, Fanatical or wherever else during the sales and save them until my friend's special occasion and send them the key or gift link.

As others have said, if you want to do a giveaway, you'll have to buy the game for the winner. You run the risk of not getting it at the sale price then.

Because it's now so inconvenient via Steam, most people now get their Steam keys for giveaways elsewhere - Humble, Fanatical, GMG, etc. If you go that route, just make sure that you're getting a Steam key (and not a Uplay / Origin / whatever key) and check for possible region restrictions (they're becoming increasingly common, are sometimes really bizarre, and it's not always obviously indicated on the store page).

Well, it costs the same on the Humble Store as there's a sale right now, so you could get it there and save it in your inventory. :)
