I dont know if it's better to leave it on or turn it off every time I go to bed.
I heard re-starting the PC damages it more than leaving it on for some hours, but I would like to hear what you usually do.

Ever heard of HALT?

"Temperature cycling and repetitive shock, power margining and power cycling are the most common forms of failure acceleration for electronic equipment."

Because have it working ALL THE TIME is a lot better right? PCs are made to be turned on and off.

I'd say it highly depends on the conditions you run it at. As in, voltages, currents, clock speeds, temperature, power saving modes etc. If you run it cool and stock with proper voltages and a good PSU, then I'd say yes, it's better. Not that much though.

I shut it down when I don't need it, downloads are fast and don't need overnight, defrag I do during the day when I'm eating or something like that and even then I turn off the monitor manually since it doens't always goes to sleep when working (the monitor, not the PC).

Just a little known fact to those of you speaking about saving money on electricity bills. Unless you're unplugging your computer and it's devices from the outlet every night, it is still using electricity. This is why when you're traveling for more than a day that it is suggested to unplug your electrical devices to prevent them from using electricity (Power Company).

Indeed. I have all of my devices ran through a light switch, which I turn off when I leave the house.

True, but its only a fraction of what the computer uses when its on. Typically, anything that can be turned on remotely has the highest offline power drain, since it needs to stay partly on to detect when its told to turn on with a remote.

Mine is always on, only booting it sometimes.

this may have been said already (didn't read the comments) but what "damages" the components mostly (like condensators & lanes) is the heating up/cooling down process.as long as you keep that to a minimum your machine could still work in 10+ years if cleaned properly

Nah. In my country, electricity is cheaper than a 65yo hooker

I turn it off every night. I used to leave it on, but it started to piss me off with its noise and I couldn't sleep because of it. So nowadays, I just turn it off for the night and put it in sleep mode if I'm just away from it.

I turn my computer off every night except when I let downloads run overnight. I also turn it off before I go to school.

I leave it on and restart it as needed when I feel it's starting to lag a bit, usually when I start seeing youtube videos skipping on me.

Mine gets turned off every night unless I'm downloading very large games, then I just turn off all case/fan lights because I cant sleep with them on

I turn mine off when I'm not going to be using it for more than a few hours, EG when I go to work or to sleep.

850W PSU, watercooled, three HDDs, it takes a bit of juice to run. If I estimate $0.15/hr (1KWH here is about $0.24) , 16 hours of non-use per day would be a waste of $2.40/day or $72/month. I have better things to do with that money. :D

For your computer it's better to leave it on. For your electricity bills it's better to turn it off.

I usually restart my desktop computers about once a month (Patch Tuesday), but my servers stay up as long as possible. My laptop gets shut down every time I move it (home->work->home) unless I'm in the middle of something and just sleep it.

If I'm not downloading anything I usually turn it off.Actually I watch movies while trying to sleep and I use a program called Shutter. It shuts down for me after I sleep -_-

BTW, electricity is too damn expensive here. And my Level 10 GT really wastes that electricity :(

Yes, every day. Partly electricity and partly more of having it rest, just my way.

No, it's better to turn it off because:

  • The Electricity bill will be smaller.

  • You won't wear out your PC's parts (new appliances have a much quicker to reach "limit" measured in hours for it's life expectancy and if you leave your pc turned on without doing anything, then you'll waste those hours which will in turn lead you into buying new parts much sooner than normal.)

  • You won't overheat the various parts of the pc.

So at least leave it hibernating or turn it off completely.
