Binding of Isaac? Sure, if you want the winner to punch in their monitor.

I got gifted it as a Christmas present and decided, "Hey, why not go for that achievement? That'd be a good way to get into the game, learn about how to play and have fun!" No, fuck you, developers. There's a difference between a game mechanic with luck-based elements (i.e. all of them ever) and a game mechanic based TOTALLY on luck (not one, but TWO high chances to fail) with no skill whatsoever. Uninstalled that shit the moment I finally got it (and a fuckload of other achievements that I didn't actually earn, I don't know what the hell happened there o_O) and it's sitting in my game library untouched until I dislike it less.

I agree with jade,
The game design is interesting and everything, but having an engine almost completely dependant on luck is just weird.
And seems like the developers were trying to encourage replayability (which is again, interesting but frustrating when you go through the whole game 15 times trying to get an item).
I do like its artistic design though.

There were no cookies in this game. 0/10. Would not play again.
Seriously, though, I have no problem with the game itself. I like roguelikes, even the ASCII ones I can barely understand looking at, but this one just rubbed me the wrong way with the Christmas achievement and how that influenced the rest of the game being like, a frustrating mess with little fun.

Pretty much. They can be very hard but they can also be very rewarding. BoI is the first one that's left a bad taste in my mouth. I will play it again, I just need some time away from it so I can get rid of my reluctance to touch it again.

Pretty much, but it's a basic Roguelike. There are far more 'unforgiving' roguelikes about, suchas Dwarf Fortress. They're games that generally just throw you into it, and you play, no questions asked. All the info you basically have to know or find out yourself.
They're games that are easy to play, but probably the hardest to master.

Any would make fine choices, but Binding of Isaac or Machinarium seem cool to me. :)
