I'm pretty sure there is 2 books, might not be right though. There may be more also, but I think 2 books separate the 2 games
Edit: I think i'm wrong

There are two books one for Metro 2033: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_2033_(novel) and the other is for Metro 2034: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metro_2034

Uhhhh very loosely. The broad events are the same (the Dark Ones, Artyom) and the ending is basically a fusion of both game endings, but most of the events in between are pretty different. The book isn't very violent. But both are VERY psychological.

Please tell your class mate to stop reading it before his brains turn to mush. From what I can remember, this book is so bad that my brain went numb after finishing it, begging me to start reading some real literature and not some Russian wanna-be writer who can't put three simple yet meaningful sentences together without making the reader want to gorge his/hers eyes out. As per OP post - No. The book and the game have very little in common, except for the obvious metro setting and a few more little things. That being said, play the game. Thankfully, Glukhovsky had nothing to do with it.

He seems to like both the game and book. And I didn't really know the writer was russian, I have only read one russian book, which reminds me of what you are speaking of. I thought it was somewhat good in the first "part" but after that I didn't really get anything, and it was all just bullshit, it's collecting dust at the moment, and I will probably never read it out. This class mate of mine is hooekd up on dubstep and xbox 360 aswell, and I'm not going to say anything about that, you can have your own opinions about those... Activities.

You may or may not have misunderstood what I meant. He is extremely annoying, because he does well know I absolutely hate that kind of ear-killing music, yet he walks around with max volume and sits next to me with his... music. And talks about that god damn music.

Well just tell him to go away. That's what I do when somebody annoys me. I tell them to go away, or I ignore them as if they don't exist. That way, sooner or later, they will realise that I have no interest in socialising with them or any of their kin. Now, I apologise for calling you out. My spidey sense has obviously failed me.

Ignore him. It's a bit strange to read, as a translation from the original Russian, but if you can push through that and enjoy a book that's less than action packed, you'll probably enjoy it. It's a very psychological and interesting book. This guy clearly couldn't handle the translation being less than perfect.

Mind you, I've read direct Russian translation done by someone who knows how to do a proper and good job. The book itself sucks major cohones. No amount of bad translating could have ruined what was bad already and this book is one of the worst books I've ever read. It's incoherent and gets lost too frequently in dumb ramblings of our main character who, for some unbeknownst reason, has no apparent character but simply serves as a device for storyteller to tell a story of nothing. He's there, he does something and a whole lot of nothing happens. Not to mention bad plot, bad side characters and whole bunch of bad references to every possible thing. As if author was trying to say "LOOK I KNOW WHO ARISTOTLE IS AND THAT'S IT".
You, my friend, have a worrying lack of taste.
And I challenge you to a duel.
On a side not, I've read plenty of bad translations. One being Tolkien's Sillmarilion, a book I fell in love immediately despite the fact that translation was as bad as it could have been. Yet, I loved the book. Why? Because it was good.

Yes there are many books and the game is not really based on the book, but more based on the world that the book takes place in. There are many other books, but only 2 in the series from Dmitry Glukhovsky. Those main two are in German, the first in English and all (including the universe books by other writers) in Russian.

AFAIK, upcoming metro doesn't follow the plot of neither 2033 or 2034 books, but rather it's own. Still, Glukhovsky was involved in making of last light, so the plot should still be connected with books in some way.

Didn't play the game, but I know that the -------SPOILER-------- bad ending of the game is exactly like the ending in the first book, and that some missions are taken from book, like nazzis and worm mission I think. I'm just guessing, but I watched the ending of the game and I've seen the achievements, but I have read the book.

It's not really based upon the book. Book is more about the nature of a man, game is more about action and horror. Book has slow tempo with lots of philosophical references and makes you think, while game is fast and makes you react. I would say game is based upon the world of the book, not the book itself. The main story is somewhat the same, but then again, it's not even close. Depends on what you, the reader/gamer, find important.

The Metro 2033 book ONLY covers Metro 2033.
But the book from Metro 2034 (The Sequel) isn't actually part of Metro Last Light

I didn't really go that far into the game, but in the beginning it follows the book quite closely, later on it starts to differ... i.e. i remember a good chunk of action above ground, but in the book it's way more dangerous to stay outside, and 95% of the time Artyom stays in the Metro.
The new game has a storyline specifically written by Glukhovski, it has little to do with either book.

Is the first Metro game based on the whole book or does the book cover the upcoming metro game too?
