I got an external harddrive specifically so that I could backup my school work. The problem is, I only used it for about a year or so and it just kinda sits there now. I keep telling myself I really should back my stuff up, but I never get around to it.

The problem was that my external said that it came with the full copy of some backup software, but it only came with a demo that was good for about a month. After that I slowly started to backup my stuff less often.

I personally was expecting bad news about Steam having some sort of issue. This is still bad news and I know the feeling of losing that much work (I used to dabble in making animations with Pivot), but I was a little relieved when it wasn't directly related to Steam.

Ouch! It's painful to lose any data, but losing many months of work...
BTW, not my kind of music, but it's still impressive, especially for an intro from several months ago. You must have put lots of time into this project, and I'm really sorry you lost it. As others said, try to get someone to salvage what is possible to salvage from the disk.

I remember when my old hard drive died. All that photoshop work gone, all those custom brushes as well.
God damn it. ;_;

I'm not real keen on all the music you used, but, personal tastes aside, it sounded well put together. I now feel the strong urge to back up my data, though. It's going to be a serious project, though. I'm sure I have over half a TB at least by now, and it's not even all organized properly (another project I've been putting off). I'd also like to use a medium that's not subject to corruption due to EM sources. Do SSHD's fit that bill? Or is there at least something that can hold more data than freaking DVD's? I'm not really happy with the idea of having to burn 100+ of those things.

A bummer indeed. With HDD prices skyrocketed it's not viable to invest in physical storage. Filehosts whose business models relied on downloads are taking heat now, leaving only cloud services as decent options. The best I've found starts at 100GB and goes up to 200 via referrals. Hardly enough.
Nice mix btw. :)

I lost about 200 movies when my hard drive failed. It was a mechanical failure so it was impossible to retrieve the lost files.

I have a lot of important data on my pc, and if my HDD fail my job and everything will fail. I use one external HDD for backup files but didn't use it for a while. You reminded me to do a backup again soon.

Spideroak is a good dropbox alternative. It focuses on security, rather than dropbox.
And, it gives more space than dropbox, at cheaper prices.
Referrals get +1gb
Spideroak
Also, if you click "Buy More Space"
Account type Change
promotion code: WORLDBACKUPDAY
You can get a base 5gb account, instead of the default 2gb.
Add the +1gb from being referred, and you would be at 6gb.

SpideOak does look a LOT more promising than Dropbox, due to the fact that you can sync ANY folder on your computer. However, the lack of uploading via the web is a major downside that prevents me from using it - I frequently access project files on computers which I have no admin rights, and I cannot upload my project that way.
SpiderOak's refer-a-friend seems very lenient, however. 1GB per referral would have made my Dropbox account green with envy.

Last time i lost my HD data i lost at least half of my drawings (ones that were sold/given away), all of my photoshops (the ones i had uploaded were low resolution), and some minor programming stuff.
I freaked out for at least 2 or 3 hours, as those drawings and photoshops were meant to go to a small competition, and maybe even win....
I know the feeling.....
Also i heard your demo, and its quite nice to hear different tempo changes and combinations instead of the typical BOOM BOOM BOOM i've heard in some dj's work, so please keep working on it, so far its looking amazingly well =D
PD: some parts reminded me of VVVVVVVV soundtrack, and just for that, i tip my hat off.

I had this mix that I had been working on for months, doing many thousands of edits, etc. Computer broke. Lost almost all the data. All that remains is this short demo intro for it, but I'm still pretty proud of even this little bit. It's not a complete mix, it was a work in progress, and this was from months ago. I hope at least someone is interested in what I was doing:
