Two days ago client sent in another batch of comments about the product I'm making, and it was god damn infuriating. Feeling the need to really smash some heads in, I bought and played some Dying Light. This morning I realized that violent games (L4D, GTA, Serious Sam, etc) have helped me to stay sane and not go postal for more than 10 years now. I guess they provide a way to vent my anger without hurting any living creature, so that should be... good?

Am I alone in this? Is anyone else using violent games for this purpose? Should I see a doctor?

Are you using violence in games to vent real-world problems?

Violent games are made to do things that normally you can not do in real life. Usually when I'm angry or when I'm in a bad mood I play Fallout or Postal, or any violent game. Sometimes playing with friends can make you forget what you were angry about. Watching videos and listening to music works too.

Fallout is great for beheading bastards and then playing with their libms :D

Though my point is not to forget what I was angry about, but to feel it fully inside me, and let the resulting rage shape my actions in the game. This way I get a relief, and I don't do anything postal (winkwink) in real life =)

Martial arts do the trick for me. Not by hitting and throwing people around (which helps as well, haha). But by working out and developing a mindset which revolves around respecting others, no matter how small or big, weak or strong they are and trying to settle matters the non-violent way first. If violence is required, martial arts can teach you how to protect yourself and deal non-lethal damage to malevolent people.

Try Boxing or Kung-Fu for hitting and Judo or Greco Roman Wrestling for pins and throws. If self-defense is a priority, find a proper Krav-Maga or other relevant school. And I say "proper" because many ill-trained instructors call themselves teachers and sensei, these days.

Either way, try going for a run, swimming or other workout at least three times a week, you will also sleep better afterwards.

Great tips, thank you. I respect the idea of having control over emotions as much as muscles.
Sometime in future, I might go through such training myself, and hopefully emerge a better person as a result. But I am not that person yet, so I vent through games =)

I already bought 1 year gym membership and intend on going there 2-3 times a week after I finish current project and have spare time. The project eats my strength and my soul, and it goes on for 4 months already. I really hope it will be finished soon, so I can shave my beard and hair, and get rid of all the bad energy gained along the way =)

Bump! I think it's pretty normal to do that. I mostly just listen to music to let it all go away. :P

Some games help, others only get me frustrated. I personally have a huge amount of self control and (almost) never show that I get angry (or frustrated, I rarely get really angry). I tend to listen to my favorite music to calm down (power metal tends to help really quick), which really helps. I rarely play games for this purpose though.

I have a good control of my emotions but that doesn't mean I don't get angry. my friends saw me get upset once or twice in 7 years but I'm actually plotting a murder on that one douche friend, of course with full plan of not getting caught. games helps to relief stress, but I don't really need, you could say I'm a psychopathic person and I'm curious who will trigger me to be a real one. if you are having difficulties controlling those emotion then it's probably the other way, sociopath.

If you plan to kill somebody and not get caught, don't talk about it on the internet ;) But if you really hate the person, you might just wait, they'll ruin their life on their own, while you'll watch and smile)

I grew up being beat up by mom and evolving into a state where I don't care about pain or emotional hurt towards myself

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On that case, Shadow Warrior, (brutal) Doom, Saints Row The Third, and games like GTA and POSTAL will help you out alot when you're feeling down or hurt.

Toxic relatives are not fun at all. One of my friends had a situation like that, and he became much happier since he moved out. Maybe that will help you too ;)
