Two days ago client sent in another batch of comments about the product I'm making, and it was god damn infuriating. Feeling the need to really smash some heads in, I bought and played some Dying Light. This morning I realized that violent games (L4D, GTA, Serious Sam, etc) have helped me to stay sane and not go postal for more than 10 years now. I guess they provide a way to vent my anger without hurting any living creature, so that should be... good?

Am I alone in this? Is anyone else using violent games for this purpose? Should I see a doctor?

Are you using violence in games to vent real-world problems?

I don't think I use games as an outlet for violence which would otherwise come out in real life, because I normally don't find it too difficult to stay in control in similar situations. If I have doubts that a response to a customer or colleague is going to come out too aggressive or is offensive I don't send the mail immediately and read it again a bit later. In some extreme cases, I even have someone else look at it before I send.

It's can be a bit more difficult in conference calls or face to face meeting, but luckily most people don't want to be too confrontational even if they're angry.

I do think that some violent games are perfect as a jolt of energy when I need to stay up for some reason and caffeine isn't sufficient. UT99 is my all time favorite for this.

This is interesting. Can you share some more details what he/she said?

Basically, client said "the riverbanks are squeezing the river, not letting it breathe. I want the river to be free and unchained". Translation is not perfect, but you get the idea. The thing is, it's a vfx shot, so changing the river flow and its banks takes a lot of time and effort. And in the last moment the client decided that he doesn't like how the river flows.

Of course I had to smash something =)

The engineering side of certain games calms and focuses me far more than violence, but there is certainly something therapeutic in putting AC-X11 rounds into Terran Republic skulls.
