Super Mario Bros The Movie (2023)
Watched it this weekend because I saw it pop up on Prime and said to myself "why not?", and it really is what my kid self would have wanted from a Mario movie rather than the weird thing we did get back then, it's just that it is like 30 years late and at this point I appreciate the uniqueness of the old live action movie more than this squeaky clean corporate version of what the Mario franchise is nowadays. I still had a good time with it but I'm kinda glad I didn't bother to go to the cinema to watch it when it premiered two years ago, it really is for kids and if you're an adult the main draw is the nostalgia, even the music is straight up non-stop nostalgia bating. Amazing visuals tho, the thing looks gorgeous.

A Complete Unknown (2024)
American biographical musical drama film. It's about Bob Dylan through his earliest folk music success until the momentous controversy over his use of electric instruments. It is very good. Bob Dylan is probably the best living songwriter (I mean just look at all those great, iconic songs he's written) and I know he has lived quite a life but I never really looked into it that much. That said, this is a very good movie and I can very much recommend it.
This is nominated for Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Picture at the Oscars. With this I have now finished all of those categories and also the whole death race.
Same thing I did last year, if I'd be a voting member of the Academy this is what I'd vote for:
Best Visual Effects: Dune: Part Two
Best Film Editing: Conclave
Best Costume Design: Wicked
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: The Substance
Best Cinematography: The Brutalist
Best Production Design: The Brutalist
Best Sound: Dune: Part Two
Best Original Song: El Mal - Emilia Pérez
Best Original Score: The Brutalist
Best Animated Short Film: Magic Candies
Best Live Action Short Film: The Man Who Could Not Remain Silent
Best Documentary Short Film: Incident
Best Documentary Feature: Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat
Best International Feature Film: I'm Still Here
Best Animated Feature Film: Memoir of a Snail
Best Adapted Screenplay: Sing Sing
Best Original Screenplay: Anora
Best Supporting Actress: Zoe Saldaña – Emilia Pérez
Best Supporting Actor: Jeremy Strong – The Apprentice
Best Actress: Demi Moore – The Substance
Best Actor: Adrien Brody – The Brutalist
Best Director: Brady Corbet – The Brutalist
Best Picture: The Brutalist
And if you've watched any of them I would love to hear your thoughts on any of these choices and on the movies themselves.

I haven't even watched all the best picture nominees (and likely won't) so I can't really give my votes but I always like reading yours.
I am rooting for Memoir of a Snail as it was my favorite movie this year and for Zoe Saldaña and Colman Domingo (Strong is a likely winner in the supporting category) although I am hoping Conclave will win for best adapted script because it's flawless, I really liked Sing Sing too.
I think Chalamet is going to win over Brody or Domingo, which is a shame imo. I wish this trend of A-lister celebrities being covered in makeup and wigs and doing impressions of famous people and getting awarded for it would just end. Or make a "best celebrity impression" category or something so that real acting can overcome the publicity stunting.

I found it a bit disappointing considering the topic. It felt like a by-the-numbers script which didn't really fully commit to its potential. The movie exposes both sides of the story while fully exploring neither. Sometimes it feels like movie writers think that "inspired by true events" just gives them a narrative pass from characterization and storytelling.

Picture Snatcher (1933)
American crime comedy drama film. It's about a gangster who decides to quit to pursue his dream of photography. I just started reading James Cagney's autobiography "Cagney by Cagney" so I was in the mood for one of his movies today and I decided on this one. And while this wasn't one of his better ones I still very much enjoyed it. Funnily enough, this might make for a neat double-feature with Nightcrawler (2014) because both are about an ex-criminal who becomes an unscrupulous photojournalist who uses unconventional methods to get photos others might not be able to get. So yeah, I can recommend this one.

Rockula (1990)
American comedy horror film. It's about a young vampire cannot lose his virginity because of a curse imposed upon him centuries ago. You probably know the old "show, don't tell" principle of writing and so should whoever wrote the script for this but they're literally telling the main character's whole backstory to his face in the first 10 minutes. What's also weird is that somehow nobody cares he's a vampire. You can often see his vampire teeth (and people seem to notice, a caricature artist for example draws him with vampire teeth) and he sings songs in multiple different genres (rock, hip-hop, pop) about the fact that he's a vampire (sometimes as direct as "I'm not the DJ, I'm the vampire) but people seem to be oblivious. So yeah, it's weird, it's a bit confusing at times, but it's fun. It's definitely schlock, but also definitely fun. And it's only 90 minutes long, so I'd say it's worth the watch. Can recommend.

Here (2024)
American drama film. It's about families and the special place they inhabit, sharing in love, loss, laughter, and life. This is probably the ultimate single-location movie (and some of you might know that I do like that kind of stuff quite a bit) as the camera is completely stationary for the whole movie. Sometimes, especially early on, the de-aging doesn't look that great on the actors but as you get closer to their actual ages of course it looks better. And you don't see them up close that often anyway. So it's less distracting than I thought it would be. But the story is very good. A bit predictable at times but good nevertheless. It is non-linear, though. So some people might find that a bit confusing (and for those I'd recommend just reading the linear plot summary on Wikipedia afterwards) but I found it to be very engaging. Lots of interesting people and you're pretty much a fly on their wall. Some tearjerker moments but at its heart the story is as much about life as it is about death. So yeah, I thought this movie was very good. Can recommend.

Here was SUCH a good movie. It's criminal that it was snubbed by the Oscars.

Au Revoir Mon Monde (2023)
French animated science fiction short film. It's about a man dressed in a sushi restaurant mascot costume, as he sprints through a city devastated by a meteor shower. This is surprisingly emotional, especially at the end, even thought that end comes way too early, as this short is only 5 minutes long. Apart from its short runtime I enjoyed this a lot, but yeah, this should be longer. Still, can recommend.

The Accountant (2016)
American action thriller film. It's about an autistic certified public accountant who makes his living sanitizing fraudulent financial and accounting records of criminal and terrorist organizations around the world that are experiencing internal embezzlement. Rewatched this yesterday and it's still good.

21 Bridges (2019)
American action-thriller film. It's about an NYPD Detective who shuts down the 21 river crossings of Manhattan to find two suspected cop killers. So... it's an action thriller, so it's not the most intellectually challenging movie to watch. But for what it was, I'd say it was good. The cast was good (Chadwick Boseman, Sienna Miller, J. K. Simmons, Keith David and more). So yeah, if you're looking for some light entertainment, I can recommend this one.

You WILLINGLY saw that?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
Haha, sorry. Couldn't resist. But yeah, that's on my top 5 worst movies I have ever seen. And I have seen a LOT of BAD movies.

It's not that bad. Obviously it's not a good movie, but it's just Carpenter having fun. Serves for popcorn, chatting and laughs: not every bad movie is able to do that.

WORST MOVIE??? Come on, he painted the desert red! It's super fun. Natasha Henstridge! Ice Cube! Jason Statham! Clea DuVall! Pam Grier! Joanna Cassidy! "It's called Ghosts Of Mars for Christ's sake," said Carpenter, when everyone took it to be a Serious Horror Film and missed the tongue in cheek aspects of it. "Why would people take this movie seriously?"

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.
I heard a lot of people didn't like this for one reason or another.
I actually thought it was REALLY GOOD.
8/10
Making me want to play War in the North now. :P :Lets see if it works.

Mad Dog Coll (1961)
American biographical crime drama film. It's about the life of notorious mobster Vincent "Mad Dog" Coll. It's good, not great. Cheaply made, probably to capitalize on the success of these kinds of stories after the hit TV series The Untouchables came out in 1959. So again, it's not great. But it's only 90 minutes long. Overall I can't really recommend this.
Well, some of you might've already guessed it, but I'm dedicating this week to watching movies with the great, late Gene Hackman. This was his debut (also the debut of Telly Savalas, who some of you might know as Kojak from... Kojak) but the only thing he did was stand there in uniform and say nothing next to Telly Savalas who's playing his superior. It was a quiet debut but we all know how Gene Hackman's career would evolve in the coming decades. So yeah, rest in peace to one of the greatest actors of our time.

Cosmis sin was the last movie. DON'T WATCH IT. That movie is very bad and get 2.5 point from IMDB. I have never seen a movie like this bad last 3-4years.

JAN
Nemesis Game
2000´s edgy teen thriller. It's an interesting story done with little taste 5/10
'night, Mother
Sad play turn into movie, about a woman who made a decision to terminate her life and selfishly have her mother be there on her final day 9/10
Deer Camp '86
Luckly, despite the huge miss this is as a comedy, the assembly of douchebags that are the main characters worked really well together 5/10
Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl
Feels like an extended short, but it's Wallace and Gromit, so keep em coming. 7/10
Jacknife
its as deep as the majority of 80s movies that deal with post war trauma, Its Melodrama. on the positive side, it's easy to digest, entertaining and well acted start to finish 6.5/10

Heist (2001)
American heist crime drama film. It's about a career jewel thief finds himself at tense odds with his longtime partner, a crime boss who sends his nephew to keep watch. Very good cast (Gene Hackman, Danny DeVito, Delroy Lindo, Rebecca Pidgeon, Ricky Jay, Patti Lupone, Sam Rockwell and more). I think the movie is good. Probably not the best it could be, but entertaining enough. Can recommend.

I looooove this movie! It's flawed, sure but I have a thing for heist movies and it's rare to find one outside of the Ocean's franchise that has such snappy dialogue and great narrative. And damn that cast!
Too bad that kinda was Mamet's last movie. One of Hackman's last too. He left a lot behind though.

Mickey 17 (2025)
From the director of Parasite, great follow up film! It has some very good social commentary on the ethics of cloning. Plus great cast and plot overall! Highly recommend.

Loose Cannons (1990)
American action comedy film. It's about a hard-nosed cop who is teamed up with a detective with multiple personality disorder to uncover a long-lost Nazi sex tape, featuring Adolf Hitler, which would jeopardize the political future of the West German chancellor-elect. Yes, the plot is pretty out there, and the fact that Dan Aykroyd plays a guy who, when he is confronted with violence, blacks out and assumes the personalities of popular culture characters like Popeye or Mickey Mouse is also a bit too silly for me. But I think Gene Hackman, Dan Aykroyd, Dom DeLuise, Nancy Travis, Robert Prosky and more aren't that bad in this movie, so I was still entertained. The movie was written by Richard Matheson (who wrote novels like I Am Legend, The Shrinking Man, Hell House, What Dreams May Come and more great, popular novels), Richard Christian Matheson (his son, who's also an author and screenwriter) and Bob Clark (who directed this, but also Black Christmas (1974), Murder by Decree (1979), A Christmas Story (1983) and many more), so you'd expect something... well, better, but sometimes, wacky like this can also be fun. So I can recommend it.

I actually had only heard of this movie because JT Walsh once mentioned being fired from it due to being in the movie Wired, which I never managed to see and was an unfortunate (from all accounts) attempt at a satirical (and unauthorized) biopic about John Belushi. Supposedly Dan Aykroyd was so mad that Walsh was cast in Wired that he got him fired.
So I admittedly got to Loose Cannons from a very tangential angle and didn't have any expectations but admittedly it's a movie that feels more like an old school SNL skit gone rogue than a fully realized movie. Hackman and Aykroyd's dynamic saves the movie from the junk heap though.

Mickey 17 (2025)
American-South Korean science fiction dark comedy film. It's about an "expendable" who goes on a dangerous journey to colonize an ice planet. Watched this at the cinema yesterday. It's really good. I don't yet know where I'd rank it in Bong Joon-ho's filmography but it's unabashedly Bong Joon-ho. I'm also not yet so sure about its Oscar chances (yes, starting the next year's Oscar race early) because it is hard sci-fi and the Academy isn't usually that keen on movies like that either, but I can say that the performances (especially Robert Pattinson, but everyone else as well) are very good. Overall this is something I can definitely highly recommend. You should really go watch it on the biggest screen you can find.

Eureka (1983)
British-American psychological drama film. It's about the life of a Klondike prospector who becomes one of the world's wealthiest men after striking gold in 1925, but, 20 years on, fears that he is being preyed upon by his daughter and her social-climbing husband, as well as a mobster attempting to usurp the Caribbean island he owns. Surprisingly good cast (Gene Hackman, Rutger Hauer, Theresa Russell, Mickey Rourke, Joe Pesci and more). Sadly this Nicolas Roeg movie is not as good as it could've been. It's also quite bizarre and at 130 minutes maybe a bit too long for what it is. The scene where our main character is murdered is also surprisingly fucked up and way longer than it should be. Overall I can't really recommend this one.

After rewatching Heist a couple of days ago, I was inspired to check out the few Mamet movies I haven't seen yet and this one was on top of my list. All I knew about it was that the play was well received and that Kenneth Brannagh played the lead character in the London production but I went in blind beyond that.
It definitely is an odd out but the great direction and William Macey's incredible performance really pulls this modern fable together. Absolutely worth watching for Macey's performance alone and that's from an actor who already set the bar pretty high.
Fair warning: it's a movie about destiny and whether humanity can redeem its foulest traits so the lead character may appear quite unsavory and says and does a lot that will feel offensive but I promise it's not gratuitous.

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
