no you should be very proud of those 5 games done. I'm proud of everyone who gets a game done especially this early. My games are just so short because I wanted to get through as many as possible when this theme is so perfect that I'm purposely avoiding anything long. I think time is more impressive then my million games, look at eyeofarrow, only 1 game done but that was a 20 hour game. While I barely sneaked into top spot just because I'm bleeding completed games left and right

Thanks! I still wish I had the time to plow through more games, though. I've let my backlog get way out of hand! But 2-3 hours per day is about the most I can hope to spare right now.
My plan is to clear at least on campaign mission in Tropico every day (just trying to beat it - not going to 100% that beast in a month!), and then put in about an hour on something else. We'll see how it goes. Good luck with the rest of your backlog marathon!

yeah many of them are super short. I've said it alot, I don't want anyone to despair for not getting a lot done. I'm proud of everyone who gets even one game done. Sure I've done alot but i've also barely put any time into gaming. It's nothing compared to completing like Yakuza, thats 1 game but its such a massive game. Or multiple telltale like games which takes me like a week to beat as I feel mentally drained completing 1 episode a day

Oh yeah I get what you mean, each Yakuza I played I put in over 50 hours (Y0, Y5, Y7), fun games though. The earlier ones I can't remember how many hours as it was too long ago. I played several TT games, my favourite is easily Wolf Among Us. A few on the backlog but I need to be in the right mood to play them.
Turnip Boy wasn't too bad but it felt like it just started before it was over. I like 2D Zelda games so enjoyed what content there was though. I left a short review up to give my thoughts as I was actually looking forward to playing it:

Also, I play games on Game Pass and less so on PS4, so Steam games don't get as much attention these days. PAYWOSG helps to motivate me to play through some games though!

When there's a game without single player campaign or some mode where you can "beat the game", the requirement for counting as beaten for the event can be that you play the game for at least 10 hours. I have to play Golf With Your Friends as it's my only unplayed win, but I really don't know if it has a standalone single player mode of some kind. If not, I planned to go with the "play 10 hours" method.
At least, that's my knowledge from other events, where it applied to AI War 2; another player selected it as well and was given this reply by sam. I was hoping to figure out what would apply for Golf With Your Friends later on and ask for more instructions if needed.

Just FYI, Golf with your Friends does not have any campaign (or at least it didn’t when i last played). It only has multiplayer, and quick play where you can select a course and go through it alone.

Welp, I guess I'm kinda screwed because I found out as well that I can't play with my friends (ironic, right?) since there's no crossplay between Steam and Game Pass which is where they have it. I'll mention it in my submission and see what sam has to say.

Since it is your last unplayed win, if you really do not have anyone that you can play with and it is probably not much fun to play alone you can choose games from your backlog

In the end I managed to do 17 achievements for now and convinced a friend to get the game so I'll probably get to play with him as soon as we match our schedules. Also I would have sworn that I had thanked you for your help and clarifications regarding how it works for this kind of games, but it seems I didn't (I wonder if I didn't submit the comment...). Explanations for higher playing times in case they are needed.
The First Tree, 2-3 hours. I really took my time on the first run and definitely went over the two hour mark on that, but then I also played the whole game a second time to get the collectibles I had missed and the first chapter's easter egg took some time for me as well.
Lost Ember, 4-12 hours. Played this one really slowly as well, searching nooks and crannies for those collectibles. Also spent some time just admiring scenery and setting up for screenshots.
Paws and Soul, does not have HLTB time at all, but Let's Plays seem to have it at about 2 hours. I spent too much time trying to find collectibles and failed to find the secrets...
Spirit of the North, 5-8 hours. I was all the way up into Chapter 7 (essentially the last chapter) and when I noticed it was going to be MASSIVE pain to complete, I decided to go back a few chapters to search for the couple collectibles I had missed on first run. I did this because on that level you need to re-find all the collectible shamans you had found before in the game, and I really did not want to do that level twice.
So yeah, I took my sweet time with games more than usual and wanted to offer explanation why. I'm completely okay with times on the site being shaved down if need be.

Finished Tropico 4's main campaign! Took longer than I expected, especially the later missions. The last mission alone took me a good 6 hours to beat!

My first Tales of game, and I think the first not turn based JRPG I played. Also I barely played any JRPG, so it's deep waters.
Overall it's pretty good, but I feel like it really overstays it's welcome length-wise. The combat system is super deep - it's not unapproachable, but definitely needs some time to get used to.
Tbh the dialogue is often cringeworthy. The dub is questionable, while skits have same voice actors do a lot better job. It's weird. I gave everyone silly costumes to make the awful deliveries better :D
I think it's impressive (and at the same time, horrible) is, how much grinding can be done in the game. Repeated farming of stat boosts, using skills make you use them for less "mana", hoarding and combining items is kind of a must - but at the same time you can get pretty solid control over what you want to fight, for what item.
The skill system still makes me dizzy, or short-circuit my brain. I just want to finish the game at this point, there is too much repetitive fighting between little story elements and sidequests for me. (I always try to explore everything, do all sidemissions while they are reasonable - and fight the monsters around me. I think this is the main reason that my gameplay time is so inflated: fights, and forgetting the game open because I got bored after the 15th fight. I think I'm around 40-50 hours in-game)
In a nutshell: really well-made game with lot of focused grind potential. Starts to run out of interesting new places and quests for me, but I'm very much at the end. I definitely will need a break from games like this, but got a lot more interested for other Tales of titles, and maybe for JRPGs in general. (Especially how Zestiria was said to have subpar dialogues, compared to other games)

Oh I never knew what i was doing about the damn stats from weapons and junk. It was more of hey look an achievement unlocked! Why idk what does it do idk. I hated trying to 100% the damn game because despite following the 100% guide I always ended up with different items which always confused me. Zestiria is still the only tales game I've done but from what I've heard the others are much better, if just as damn long. All those games are in the 100+ completion category
Oh and yeah there are better JRPGS out there that don't overstay their welcome, even with a new game+

The only category I see that would fit would be the "any win, but you have to complete it", which should not be that difficult since HLTB says that people did it in 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 hours and looking at the achivements the hardest is probably to reach level 30.
Tag categories are solely for the tag,e.g. the game needs to have the specific tag to fit it. No achivements here means literally the game does not posses achievements and the other one is for games that you already started and have at least 1 achievement done.

Oh man, I thought I'd never finish Narita Boy! I almost gave up about 2/3 of the way in because of all the backtracking and switch hitting... and all the damn doorways/passages that are hidden in the midst of decorative set elements!
I really loved the story and the art. A real gem of a game that could use a little redesign in the mechanics department but is well worth playing.
I guess I can see now why less than 15% of players reached the end game achievement! Glad I made it but so so happy this was a win because I just can't imagine replaying it entirely to find the two damn secret rooms I missed for 3 achievements!
Framed Collection was ok. The mechanics are cool for a while but it gets repetitive fast. Also it's a buggy mess so i literally had to start over to get the completed achievement. Yay.
I had been looking forward to AER for a while but I kept putting it off. The story was a little too basic and very linear but damn, the world is beautiful to fly around and explore. I won't play it again but I'll definitely revisit just to soar in the skies.
Niche was just so much fun. I wasn't expecting to like it that much or to be moved by the story mode ending and finally getting my little tribe back to where it came from generations ago. I have major skepticism about that HLTB playing time because it took me a lot of tries to even get my tribe living past the first couple of islands but I guess since the world building is totally random, some people could have had it easier to get all the way home? Or maybe they just idled for cards I dunno.
It really did deserve that Education tag though. I learned more about genetics in 3 days than I have learned in all my bio classes :P
I loved loved Röki but I haaaaate that I missed out on two achievements I locked myself out of. On the other hand, I'll have to replay it again so I guess I'll wait for my niece to be a little bigger not to get too scared by some parts and we can play it together. I'm just going to have to work on my monster voices as it always ends up in masterpiece theatre when we play games with no spoken dialog :P

Yes this is okay, as long as it fits the usual "not games which are like 95% done already" rule. Just remember to add the old playtime and achievements to the page.

How I see it:
Game has achievements - if I go through the main story line, but there are still achievements to open, I mark it as beaten. If I gain 100% of the achievements I mark it as completed. If I want to play the game some more, I play it.
Game has no achievements - if I played through the main story and there is no additional content, I mark it as completed. If the game offers in-game achievements or there is some extra chapter or alternative story line, I mark it as beaten to be sure to come back to it.
Completed means that you have basically seen everything the game has to offer. Beaten means that you have just scratched the surface of the story. But again, just my point of view.
Edit: As about the DLC question. If the game has DLC specific achievements and you don't own it you mark it as beaten after going through the story, because there is still more to see.

I think Kyrrelin has already explained the difference between Beaten and Completed so let me just add that for this particular subcategory the game must have achievements. Otherwise it would be way to difficult for Sam to check it's progress.
When I made the theme I didn't included backlog games in this as the main goal of this is that you play your wins. But Sam came up with the idea to extend this subcategory to backlog games for once as a little bonus.

That is a general question that gets asked quite a lot surprisingly. You can put it however you want, as long as you show proof that you beat the no achievements game you can choose completed or beaten.

Maybe I should change my name to moony. When you add the game to the site you will see 2 sections, 1 for backlog and 1 for wins. it was stuff like time being super big. like 3 hours being 20 hours with no explanation (just attitude) and no way for it to be that long. you dont get 400+ hours unless you manage to screw up the timers. or like our actual 3 dude up there play super long games to completion

Explanations are important for sure. Once I have doubled HLTB time but it was a puzzle game that I solved all by myself without any help. Yes I'm proud. :) However 3 hours long game being 20 hours has no explanation even if there was one. I guess cheaters want to be in top no matter what leader-board it is. :)

That's why we have the whole explanation for if your time is to long. Because it got out of hand. Even multiple attempts at a game doesnt have 3 turn into 20, multiple times. If you got an honest reason for times being long then no one cares, just explain.

If it was for achievement hunting I'd have understand, still too long though. Some games have achievements that you can only get one or two by playthrough. Usually they're VNs and you can skip scenes for the sake of achievements. I assume it wasn't even a VN in this case.
By the way, do you use AStats (on pagywosg) for checking participants' achievements to see if it was legit? Not sure if it's working without the one logs in the website though.

The person in question was also a member of PA. And while the PAGYWOSG website is pretty simple and doesn't log much, the PA website has a nice arsenal of tools (only accessible to admins) to see exactly what is going on with the games that people play. I can give you a 100% guarantee those playtimes were not legit at all.
Can't answer as to what Sam and Nin use at the moment since I don't run the event anymore, but I can say that I didn't really use Astats as I am not a fan of it. I had my own tools and ways. But generally after you have been checking peoples play times every day for 4+ years you learn to smell something is not right from 3 miles away. People are generally pretty bad at hiding this type of things (but you do get some from time to time where you do have to go dig deep to get the proof).

Well, even without tools, 15 hours a day already smells from afar. Being also a PA member seems to make the investigation easy. :)
About AStats, I always had a feeling about they look kinda shady but couldn't put my finger on it. If you know something about that, I might tend to delete my account right away. It's a cool tool but I don't like shady things.

Just don't look to much into the site atm because currently there is one too many thing awaiting review because I haven't had the time to deep dive into some of them :D
Oh no, I know it still rings alarm bells when you see that regardless, just PA stats gave me the definitive proof that yea, it is idled and there is no way around it. I wont go into why/how publicly because, well, I don't wanna give people any ideas.
I don't know about anything shady no, but I have seen a lot of what I would class as incompetence I guess? And this is very case specific annoyance to me because of compiling required playtimes for PA (if you ever seen something that doesn't seem quite right please come yell at me as a lot of time I have to work with very little data): main/main+extra/completionist playtimes are usually very much off compared to something like HLTB. And you can't even see who submitted what playtime or how many people did (maybe you can if you are logged in?) so you can't even go and verify whats going with the calculation on unlike with HLTB.
I first wrote "smell bullshit from a mile away" but then I thought it might be a bit nicer to reword it :D

I think HLTB stats make compiling slow, it's probably the same with "Do you even play bro" too. I can report things of course though I only look at people's stats if I'm interested in a category, so far saw nothing suspicious. Still I don't understand why would anyone idle games. There are no extra rewards for the leaderboard if that's what they care, apparently not.

Always found astats a pain, mainly used it to see if games had a timer on it because hltb doesn't. Of course they don't either unless i truly believe everyone plays it for 0.3 hours to completion
Yeah no rewards for placing high on the board. Just pride, I know I worked hard in November to place top spot but that was just all for fun then being like must be top!!!! We want correct stats so we get a nice end of month stat to compare to last month

Actually Steam API should allow pulling stats from every public profile without login to some website but guess it's not so practical (probably it would be like a DDoS). I'd like to know how many people have that achievement rather than just percentage. AStats only shows the members. Though we don't have an alternative to it, I think.
I wish every "work" was enjoyable like that. :) (Congrats about that btw). Gaming is about fun, cheating makes it a chore and pulls all the fun from it. Some people never learn and make people miserable as they are.

For me its harder to play longer games then multiple tiny games. November was working hard at touching some longer ones and not giving up like I did the whole last year. With tiny games even if I dont like them its quite easy to just skip through it all

Yep, it is handy for that for sure, but requires login to be able to update someones profile so I tend to just check everything manually. Its not that often that I need to go look that far into things anyways.
What do you mean exactly with compiling? The only thing I hate with HLTB is that games are not tied to Steam AppIDs nor you can query the game name directly into the URL which makes automation annoying. Oh and the fact that they don't wanna add Proton/Wine as a platform :( (I asked a couple of weeks ago and they where like "submit them under Windows", what about no, they are staying under Linux).

That hasn't happened to me yet and HLTB times are usually correct. That's related to the game's popularity, if there are only 4 reports, you can be sure it'll be much different. Or if it's bombarded by die-hard fans, expecting a less playtime would be wise. :)

God I wish they actually had an API. Nope, gotta manually get all the data... There was at some point some addon that linked the Steam AppIDs with the HLTB game ID so you could kinda automate it (not all games were linked) and grabbed you the playtime information (but only in hours without minutes for some reason) and then Reforced somehow feed that data into the PA site but it doesn't work anymore (not sure where exactly it broke).
Funny thing they actually don't have a category for "Windows" (even tho they told me to use it). They only have a category for "PC", "Linux", "Mac". Makes literally 0 sense, but they don't seem to be willing to fix that mess.
There is Completionist.me but it seems to be more achievement based and they only show playtime for completions (no main story/main story+extra) and those times are grabbed automatically and not even checked from the looks of it so it is not fantastic.

Yea accuracy depends a lot on the type of games you play. I am a fan of weird, small puzzle games nobody ever heard of and those usually don't even listed on HLTB most of the time.

That website looked good enough at first and then I checked Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which is I'm currently playing, and noticed 2 guys have 100% achievements with 1 minute playing. Not so useful for HLTB purposes, still it could give a general idea though.
Never saw a game without a playtime on HLTB myself but saw a lot of them with only 3-4 reports which is not healthy, especially when one of them is a 120 hours maniac. Why would someone do this to a 15 hours game I don't understand. There should be a way to get correct playtimes but it's hard. You cannot trust a person, you cannot trust a one's Steam playtime either. This needs a serious algorithm.
Yeah, building from scratch always consumes too much time. It's fun in the end but also a classic programmer's dilemma. Still worth the dopamine I guess. :D

Yup, but sadly the only way to get the playtimes more accurate is for people to submit more playtimes to weird ones get evened out. I also try and report anything that I randomly come across that is literally impossible and they are thankfully really good at removing those (so far they were all gone within a day or 2).
It also makes you lose your sanity a little :D

I don't think those 1m playtimes are private, because when a profile is private it cannot get achievements too.
I was kinda afraid that you would say some thing like "statistically corrected" because it needs way more entries to be actually useful, many games have enough entries anyway. I guess we don't have a better way yet. I still think a better algorithm could be implemented though.

You can actually have private playtime and public achievements. All you need to do is to put your games to public but your total playtimes to private. Don't ask me where is the logic in that, you will have to ask valve.

There is a lot of questionable stuff about their privacy settings. There was a bug a while back that if your games/playtime were private it would tell all your friends at the beginning of each CS:GO round (so every ~2minutes) that you are infact playing CS:GO lol. Also they constantly break your wishlist visibility if you have something set to private. Valve being Valve :D
Where I am at you can decide to go to a technical school and get a degree in high school already (can be anything, IT, nursing, economy, cooking, auto mechanic, wood working, cosmetology,...) so I did just so and went to an IT one so my classes were probably about 50% general subjects 50% IT related subjects. Funny thing is I went to study IT in college afterwards and I swear to god high school was way harder (to be fair I did the "lowest" level of college we have here that only takes 2 years but still). Main difference was that I had C# instead of Java, but I would take Java over C# any time of the day. I haven't touched Java since HS, but I really didn't mind it that much. But I am also one of those weird people who like PHP :D
And nothing will ever be as close to shit to me as X++ was. You literally can't pay me enough to go back working anywhere close to anything even remotely related to Microsoft Dynamics AX.

That's a nice system, it used to be somewhat similar to that here too but sadly it's long gone and education is a giant mess here. I have no idea how they manage to devastate it even more when they introduced something new it's beyond any reason. So I kinda envy you.

It's the same actually, it's GMS's language, Game Maker Language (GML), very simple naming. They didn't go for something fancy. :)
Well, that's kinda long story but I can share of course, at least a short version. :3
Normally my main project is 2D action RPG game (similar to Diablo at some point), closest game on the market is CrossCode, maybe old Ys games. But not a pixel based game, all hand-drawing assets (there is also a surprise part but that's a surprise :D ). However I needed some experience before that, so I started to make a 2D platformer instead. Still hand-drawing assets and kinda old school animation (not as old school as Cuphead). I have two strong attributes, drawing and writing. I thought why not a third one (programming) so I started all this. I still need a composer but I have a friend for that. Everyone says I'm too slow about everything but that's just who I am, artists (should) have all the time. :P
I mean I need money especially these days but I don't want to release a half-ass game, that's not me. Also I don't want to make porn games for quick money. I hope I won't need to do that. :D
I'm still not exactly sure about the genre, so cannot say metroidvania or something else, but I have a story, I have a depressed environment, creating that's harder than I thought by the way. Story starts with a demolition of a country and a suicide attempt (main character), there is a twist with that of course, and vengeance turns into a sacrifice in the end. Basically this. If I finish at least the half of it, I'm thinking about a Steam page but there is still time for that apparently.

Since you owned GMS2 before they switched to subscription-based, you're free to use it (until GMS3 more likely). At least they didn't charge previous owners, well kinda. I was thinking about switching to Godot for a while to be fair but there is a saying here, don't swap horses while you're passing the bridge, so it's the same situation. :)

I don't like subscription-based programs either but it happened after Opera acquired YoYo Games, they even tried to flex subscription-based features on users but after a protest they pulled it back, for now. Even Unity is free to use, I don't know what they're trying to do. I mean it's a nice piece of software but come on, Godot is entirely free and open source. Even HeartBeast switched to Godot after so many years with GMS. That's what I will do eventually too but yeah, not now.
If it was many years ago, it's probably GMS 1.4 that came with Humble Bundle. :)

Yeah, that's usually what I do as well but there are layers to it. As one of the devs for Civ IV said "players will optimize the fun out of a game". And that's sort of what I got into here. Given I now try to do it regularly I also look into the future when choosing a game. It's pretty easy to predict the next theme - in a first few hours of the event going live one option will already gather significantly more votes than the others and it's typically the one to win (like Long Story Short will win for February I voted for Eye Of The Tiger if anyone cares). So I look at those games and see that one fits both this and next months theme so I'll likely pass on it this month to play the other. Then there's the issue of Time to beat - I have to anticipate how much time the following month I could dedicate to that game and cross validate with HLTB if it'll even be possible to finish in whatever time I could allocate! Another consideration is the issue of the game's "beatability" - I generally speaking suck at games so often I'd really like to play a game, it fit's the theme and it should be finishable in the time I have but I might require a certain ammount of skill to complete and I'm just worried I'd end up pushing it past my allocated time (potentially jeopardising some "real life" stuff) or simply blowing the event and then feeling bad with myself that I could have chosen something easier and actually get it done instead of wasting all that time on a futile effort. And last but not least I look at the proveability of the game's "beaten" status - i.e. wheteher is has an obvious "finished the game" achievement or not. Usually with all these I can narrow it down to "a choice" but with this month's theme beeing so open there was just so many possibilities and so many variables that I literally had to force myslef to stop "choosing" and do something "productive" especially given January and possibly February beeing very busy for me!

man, I did it for I think June. had such a high hopes for the game - universe I love in a genre that I love. And it even started so great! Then somewhere about halfway through the campaign all the flaws and cut corners were getting so glaringly obvious and and top of that constant gamebreaking bugs started creeping up every 20 mins of gameplay or so. considering its for the achievements part of 100%, untouched would be no achievements unlocked yet. Typically you get an achievement early on so they would typically be untouched. Idle time doesn't matter just put them in the stats
no achievements = you can't possible get achievements as not implemented
Other part is for games you've played before, gained some achievements but happened to drop it/not finish it at some point. But yeah at least 1 done before this event

Well if it is clearly idle time, e. g. you have time on it but haven't gotten any achievements yet then that's fine, though we would prefer games that literally haven't been touched yet to make it easier.
And no achievements means games that don't have any achievements.
And the other one is have at least 1 achievement already done, e. g. unfinished games.
And generally you can add any unplayed games with achievements (as long as you are completing them eg getting all the achievements).

A little bug report.
For American Truck Simulator, "stats before the start of the event" part shows I had 119 achievements before the event (it was 17 I guess), anyway because of this now I have -94 achievements. :)

not really a bug, if you have stats before the event you should add them yourself, since the algorithm does not do this automatically.
Normally we check them manually but it m ight have slipped through the cracks.

Who can participate
Anyone who does not have any unactivated wins, multiple wins or a VAC ban. You can participate even if you don't have any SteamGifts wins, see the "Have already completed all your wins?" below as it applies to this scenario too.
Extra Rules:
If it gives you one bundle of games with one steam ID then it depends. Do they each have achievements of their own (including an ending achievement)? Then go ahead and play them separately. Though make a note in the notes section, so we know what to look for. Non achievement games or games that play continuously (e.g. all entries play through without an ending between them) are not allowed atm since we do not have a good way to track them separately.
