people just collect useless stuff in their inventory for no reason.

Coupons are useless anyway, why do you care what people do with them, if i could i would delete most of them. If you find them valuable then just keep them to yourself.

I don't care, really. More curious than anything. I thought they were mostly useless, but they seem to have some value to someone. Based on the trades of them I see lately anyway.

Have you considered they might have used them to buy the game to a friend rather than theirselves? A friend of mine tends to buy them to giveaway later.
I'm surprised people trade for them... I've been offering my Portal 2 coupon(as a gift, not as a trade) for ages and no one wants it!

Well, I actually do use the coupons and generally anything I enter for, because that's just plain rude to people who actually want it and the people who wanted to give something they could've thrown away.
Like the Portal 2 75% discount I just got from a guy on Reddit, I plan to use it to get my coworker a birthday present (how the hell does he have Steam and not know what Portal is?).

I don't have time to stalk people on Steam to see if they use coupons I've given away. I feel it would be somewhat disingenuous of me to care how they benefit from my gift anyway, so long as they benefit. If anything, I'd be kind of excited to know that a person traded my worthless coupon for an actual game.

I've never checked, don't even remember who I gave them to. As long as they're not in my inventory anymore I don't care.

Sometimes I want a coupon for a game, but I'm not sure if I want to get it at the discounted price or not.. if it is a game I really want/will get to any time soon (most of the time I end up backing out, I have enough backlog and college ><)

I've had this happen before. I now offer the coupons 1-2 days before they expire. This usually keeps the traders/hoarders away. If there's no interest still, then I just let them disappear in my inventory.

I've made the same experience after the holiday sales initially, but after I started explicitly asking people to only request a coupon when they actually want it to buy a game for themselves (as opposed to trading it on for profit), almost all of my coupons ended up being used by the persons who got it from me.

Guess I'm just not enough of a 'hustler'. I've given away a number of free coupons and I notice that no one has ever purchased a game with any of them. They tend to get traded away almost immediately. I do try and check that at least the folks I trade with:
1) haven't had 5+ aliases and are known bad traders, or banned anywhere.
2) don't have the game I have a coupon for.
I'm fairly busy and don't have the kind of time to trade little things like this. Anyone else see this kind of thing a lot?
