I got my son an IdolPad for about $80. Spent $200 with the screen warranty, screen protectors, case with keyboard.
Idolpad Plus

Plays games, does netflix, good wifi range.
I don't like the charger and it doesn't like to charge via usb but you can.

If that has the A13 cpu, it's pretty slow.

anything with a rk3066 cpu should be cheap and perform well enough.

Save some cash and buy Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (u should be able to get brand new for about $180)

Over stock Android 4.1.2 it has also official support of Cyanogenmod, which is a huge advantage.

Avoid noname chinese junk.. you will get no software updates, custom ROM's or any support in that matter, you can also expect lots of apps to be not compatible.

I'd rather save my money vs getting a cheaper tablet that will just give you headaches and frustration

I think with the New Nexus 7 coming out soon, you can probably get the previous (used or refurbished) Nexus 7 on Ebay for that price. MUCH MUCH better than any of the other Chinese knock-off tablets (they will lag pretty bad), and better value than the overpriced IPads. Source: I'm using one and loving it!

Waiting is always good if you can, though I think you can find pretty decent Chinese tablets these days. The problems with ordering from Chinese stores are that it's a little risky: you might not get what you ordered or get it in a bad condition, and you won't have a warranty, or it will require you sending the tablet to China. Still, most people do get working tablets, far as I understand.

Regardless of where you buy them, cheap tablets usually suffer from low battery life and worse compatibility with the Google Play store. Still, if you know what to expect and don't need the best experience, they can provide a satisfying experience.

In any case when you buy it's important to check the specs: (prices in this discussion are in Chinese stores)

  • Resolution: The higher it is, the more comfortable your browsing will be and the better your videos and games look. The cheapest tablets have a 800x480 resolution, but it's easy to find tablets with an 1024x600 resolution for under $100, and I'd recommend that as a minimum. 1280x800 hasn't yet made it to sub-$100, but it's possible to find it for not a lot more. The cheapest 1280x800 tablet I could find on a Chinese store is this one at around $105 after the 8% discount code available on the site.
  • Screen technology: Most cheap tablets come with TN screens, which have limited view angles. Look out for those advertised as having an IPS screen. (They're not always really IPS, they may be MVA for example, but that's still better than TN.) Not many tablets under $100 have such screens though.
  • Storage Space: Cheap tablets come with 8GB to 16GB of flash storage as standard, some of it already used. (Some still have 4GB but the price saving isn't worth it.) Virtually all these tablets also have a microSD slot, which allow you to plug in up to 32GB more. If you're serious about viewing movies on a tablet, it's good to have lots of storage space.
  • RAM: The bigger it is, the less re-loading of applications or web pages you'll encounter, and the more complex games you'll be able to play. The currently low end standard is 512MB, which is okay for most uses, but there 1GB is becoming more common at the $80-$100 range, and would be a better choice.
  • 3D core: That would determine the 3D performance, and to some extent compatibility with games. I won't go into this more because it's complex, but if you want I can tell you more.

I can only recommend the Blackberry Playbook, I think it was 400$ or so when it was released, soon dropped to 200$ (because people didn't like the Blackberry-OS for some reason - I don't get it, you can even install android apps) and when it had dropped to 200$ I bought a completely unused (still in original packaging) from ebay for 130$.
You should really invest these ~50 extra bucks, because what you get for it is incredible:
A fast tablet with great resolution, well manufactured, good camera and many other features. Oh, did I already say that it has a working Flash-player? And good enough hardware to handle it?
