first off.. you need to give us some system specs or we cant tell if your PC is HDMI compatible.

What kind of system specs do you need? I'm building the PC tomorrow. :)

GPU is the most important. by GPU I mean Video card.

yea for sure then.. just need a HDMI cable then.. so you dont have to switch your cable between your cablebox/satelite and your new PC constantly.

HDMI is a pretty common way to connect a monitor. You should have no trouble using your TV as a monitor - it'll probably be a little lower resolution than a standard monitor, and you might have to mess with the under/overscan settings on your video card to make it fit the screen properly, but it's mostly just a matter of plugging a cable into the TV and your video card and then selecting the appropriate video input on the TV.
As for buying cables, you'll certainly need something to connect it with. If your video card has HDMI-out you can just get a standard HDMI cable. If not, you probably at least have DVI-out on any vaguely recent video card, so you can either use a hybrid HDMI-DVI cable, or get an HDMI cable and a Female HDMI to Male DVI adapter to connect it to.
Also, in case it needs to be said: do not, do not, DO NOT buy an overpriced HDMI cable from one of the big retail stores. BestBuy and the like love to try to sell them for like $30, when you can easily order them online for no more than a couple bucks.

Use a common HDMI Cord, in a walmart or something like thath its selling a HDMI Cord

The graphics card will tell you if it has an HDMI port, IF it has, then check if the TV has one, which it should, if both of them have the port, then you just need an HDMI cable, cable then you just plug both, it may look weird, just update graphics card drivers, thats it, im using my tv as monitor :3

The video card does have an HDMI port.
Edit: And the TV does too. :D

Thank god, I'll pick up and HDMI cord tomorrow, thanks!

Do I need two HDMI cords though, one for inside the PC and one for hooking up the TV to the PC?
Comment has been collapsed.
Nope. The video card will connect directly to your motherboard (and power supply), no additional internal video cable is necessary. Once the video card is installed, just plug one end of the HDMI cable into your TV and the other into your video card and you should be good to go.

Are you actually serious? Yes you need to plug your pc into whatever screen you are using, be it a monitor or tv... It doesnt have to be hdmi, most tv's also support vga or dvi inputs... Just gather up all your cables and take a look at whether they can be plugged into your tv, and if you find one that can see if you can plug the other end into your pc... I honestly don't know how to explain it to someone on your level in any other way.

I know I need a screen for it.... But, I wanted to know if my HDTV would work.

I'll grab an HDMI one as it supports video and audio.

Don't forget to switch the audio on your computer to the hdmi (in playback devices) or you might have picture and no sound

Well I haven't finished building the PC, but I'm very close! I will finish up tomorrow, and then on Friday I need to pick up a monitor cord for my TV. I got the HDMI Cord, but I need the Monitor Cord for it to act as a monitor. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not 100% sure. xD

I have done what you are planning to do and the hdmi cable is all you need. Also, when I do that, my computer identifies the tv by the model number in the playback devices, so keep your eye out for that, I originally was going nuts trying to figure out why I had no sound. Shown here as the top choice (Not plugged in because I am using my computer monitor right now)

Well the HDMI cable wasn't giving me any picture. I plugged the HDMI into the Video Card and the TV.

I did an external build first to make sure the parts were working, they were, but no picture :/

Did you change your display? I have to go into display settings, change the monitor to the tv, then tell it to show desktop only on display 1 instead of 2 which is how it would be if it was on my computer. I hope this helps and good luck! Normal pc mode and TV as computer display mode

I went to the HDMI setting on my TV, didn't work, so I tried every other setting, nothing worked. Maybe is it, because my OS an stuff isn't installed yet? I mean it's still not completely finished being built lol.

That could be too, I added 2 images of what I do when I do what you do lol....I'm out, good night.

You will need a quality graphics card which supports DVI and/or HDMI (the only quality difference between them is digital audio signal through HDMI). Your HDTV will also required one of those. Note that with TV connection normally the signal is limited to 60Hz (unless your TV is designed for gaming, consoles, or fast pase action/sports. Resolution might also be limited to 1920x1028. Pixels are larger and blurry compared to a pc monitor but in a way lower resolutions don't look as bad from distance (game consoles have 3x less quality than a pc but get away with it).

HDMI should do fine, they are cheap at places like Monoprice, amazon, and ebay, honestly don't fall for the expensive cord trap, 99 percent of them are perfectly fine and will yield the same results as a 50 bucks cord. You should look into IPS monitors once you have cash.

IPS is a display technology. Traditionally, panels used to be all TN. As of the last few years, IPS and PLS became much more affordable and offer greater image quality than TN panels. This is why if you want to buy any monitors these days, it is recommended that you go for IPS/PLS panels.

Basically it has better color, no bad viewing angles, etc...

or you can try with DVI..same quality and sometimes you can buy it cheaper than HDMI. and if you have a good monitor never ever go with VGA because the quality is crap.
Edit: Since i don't think you need a long cable you can try to buy it from ebay at a low price

I have a PC, but not a monitor, because I can not afford one at the moment. What I do have is a small little HDTV, I'm pretty sure it will work as a monitor, I just have a few questions. Do I need to buy any chords? I don't have a spare HDMI chord, so do I need to buy another? Also, in this video the guy hooks up an HDMI chord into the PC components as well, do I need to do that as well? I hope you answer, and this is only temporary until I can afford a monitor. Also, in the video I linked you to, the person is using a Monitor, so I don't know why he's hooking up and HDMI chord in the PC components. Thanks for reading! :)
