Hello, I am setting up a small YouTube channel and already posted some stuff here and there, but I don't have any way to record (gameplay) videos yet.

I searched the internet yesterday and found "Icecream", which is free. It works fine and has many options, but the quality of the videos is pretty mediocre and to save videos in MP4-format you need to upgrade to premium which costs 30 euros.

Can anyone recommend me a video recording software that provides high-quality videos for free or on trial? Otherwise I probably will have to buy the premium version of "Icecream", which is also fine because it is only 30 euros, but I'd rather have something free.

Also, are "Fraps" and "Action!" worth checking out?

Right now I'm using Xsplit GameCaster, Although, I recommend OBS, but sometimes it messes up your recordings.

I'd tell you to get DxTory if you can pay, If you don't want to just use shadowplay.

Also gl doing a successful gaming channel on YT right now, all gaming channels are dead now except the very big ones.

The only way to get noticed is doing funny skits (SolidShibe and dolan dark style or bionic pig) or cancer commentaries. Otherwise you have to be very good and get a lot of attention (make some drama) to grow.

Thanks, but my goal is to do more than only games, to reach a wider audience.
So far I have only made some animations, a music playlist, even a skit, and some other things. I will probably share it once I have uploaded some more. :)

I'd say no, I know some gaming channels that are still growing. Sl1pg8r being one of them.

No personal experience, but.. LoiLo game recorder might be a good, easy choice. Hard to find trustworthy reviews of it, though.

if you have an NVIDIA card i think you can use Shadowplay.

+1, I was using DXtory for a long time, and when I swapped to Shadowplay I was blown away by how much better it was.

The thing with Shadowplay is that it can't record anything besides games that are detected by Nvidia. Though I am not sure anymore because they have improved it pretty much.

So can I also use it to record things like my browser?

Not true anymore. Shadowplay will record pretty much anything on your screen if you set it to Desktop mode. This is what I use.

So I tried Shadowplay and it works perfectly, but I can nowhere find the option to enable Desktop mode.

Could you help me out?

EDIT; I found several articles saying it's not possible (unless messing with the source code) to enable it on a laptop, and I am using a laptop, might be the problem?

Maybe. I have the newer GeForce Experience (I think the one in beta) setup, so I forget where you can enable Desktop capture, but right now it's under:
Alt+E -> Preferences -> Privacy -> Yes

I was still able to use the one for desktop mode before, but I have no idea if it depends on you having a laptop or not.. I honestly doubt it.

edit: I wouldn't really recommend ShadowPlay, but it's because sometimes when I've used it to capture videos some have an obnoxiously warped audio (might only be in some games)

example: https://youtu.be/sQDN3EacOmk will probably be up by the time you see it (unless the audio gets magically fixed once it's uploaded)

edit: the audio barely sounds as obnoxious compared to when I play the original file, so who knows.. who knows..

I still can not find Desktop mode. I also use the new GeForce Experience (version 3.0.6.48).
It works well for any games that are detected by NVidia, but doesn't record anything else, not even the mouse cursor.
On every website I see that Privacy Control isn't an option on several PCs including a lot of laptops, therefore I can't use it.
Shadowplay worked well with recording the desktop, but it was removed with this new version.

So I will try another software.

OBS seems to be the one most people use, and it's completely free. I last used Fraps about 3 years ago and it was shit, I don't know if its improved since then.

Either Nvidia Shadowplay, OBS or XSplit come to mind.
AMD used to have a similar functionality with Gaming Evolved/Raptr but then they changed it and now it's shit.

Shadowplay is the best both Performance and quality wise the only downside is the voice audio quality game audio is fine but i would recommend using audacity for it anyway so :)

I recommend nVidia ShadowPlay, it's pretty smooth, no lags, recording desktop and It is perfect for youtube. And it's free of course. Or MSI Afterburner.

if you're on windows 10, game dvr is an option

Checked it out because I haven't heard it yet and I use Windows 10. It seems very similar to Shadowplay for Nvidia though this is for Windows/Xbox.

I will probably try it if Shadowplay and OBS aren't suitable.

obs should be more than suitable after a small learning curve

If for some ungodly unexplainable reason you have GeForce Experience installed, might as well use Shadowplay.
Otherwise OBS.
Both use h.264 encoder (forget NVenc, it is terrible).

If for some ungodly unexplainable reason you have GeForce Experience installed. wowow

It was installed already or installed soon after I got this PC, though I haven't really used it yet because it tries to optimise games to their lowest settings..., the reason being it detects and prioritises my Intel Graphics card instead of my NVidia Graphics card. :/

But I will just try both OBS and Shadowplay and see which works the best.

NVEnc is H.264, but it uses the GPU to encode it instead of the CPU and has very little impact on your game performance. ShadowPlay uses NVEnc. I never could get ShadowPlay to work, and GeForce Experience is a bloated turd, so I got rid of it.

I have had no problems recording or broadcasting games with OBS using NVEnc.

I use MSI Afterburner.

Works awesome and also has some GPU tools as well.

OBS simply gives a black screen on laptops with two Graphics cards.
There is no solution to it anywhere. The only solution is to disable the Intel Graphics card and let everything run on my NVidia Graphics card, but that would be nonsense.

And that NVidia recorder does not work either (only on several games) for laptops since the last version, which was released a month ago.

XSplit does not work either, for the sake of god it keeps crashing.

I am just going to try MSI and otherwise I'll have to spend money.

MSI is terribly confusing to set up properly. I've decided to buy the full version of Icecream for 30 euros.

A good idea is gamedvr on windows 10. You can record any game on computer and xbox one.

Try it out!

I tried it, but it seems like it can only record one window at a time (and you have to mark it as "this is a game", so now my browser and documents are "games").
Also it's unable to record the desktop. Though quality and audio of what it can record is great.

True.

I'm about to try icecream myself, just to see what it is like :)

IF you have Nvidia then Use Shadowplay and if you're an AMD user then use its Plays.tv Recording software. Both are free and have the least impact on your game performance plus both allow you to create fine videos with various range of bitrates and have the least amount of size of its video files. I also have a youtube channel and am using Plays.tv(AMD) its been Great aside from a few crashes.

Fraps was great at first but honestly it isn't that good. Windows 10 was amazing but it isn't that good either some games you can't record in fullscreen. The best So far that I have tried is the Nividia Geforce experience recorder. It's pretty much flawless you can't even feel the game is recording .

I strongly Suggest to use Nividia to record games and use different software like Obs/xsplit or Action for Desktop.
