True, banning Valentine is something else than choosing not to celebrate it. I'm not in favor of the idea, but given international tendencies etc.. i can't say i'm very surprised to hear this.

The difference is that Ramadan isn't banned, which makes banning Valentine's day seem strange, I'd assume. And Valentine's day isn't exactly a very religious holiday.

Permalink

Valentine has roots in Christianity. That's enough for fundamentalists to ban the whole thing altogether.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If you dig deep enough, most modern things have roots in a period where religion was prevalent enough to have influenced it. Fundamentalists don't really need 'reasons' to ban, though. It's enough that it's different from what they feel comfortable with. The rest is often just an after-the-fact rationale.

Sadly this is quite much the case indeed.

It's really a lot deeper. Modern things were changed by religion from old things, like all major holidays apart from those related to independence. Just overimposed the old stuff of certain period in year with newer stuff.

Christmas is really the Roman holiday Saturnalia, which evolved from an earlier Germanic one, which itself cam from another predecessor of the Mountain peoples of the Turkish-Armenia steppe, etc.

I'd have to say Youtube and internet video blocks based on region are pretty strange. They know we have plenty of available web-based proxies, and often the location-based blocks are in open and civilised countries where the content isn't stonewalled due to religious reasons. The number of times I used to get "SORRY YOU CAN'T VIEW THIS MUSIC VIDEO BECAUSE NOT AVAILABLE IN THE UK" for things I could easily see on my TV was pretty dumb.

Are you ok with the government forcing religions to accept what goes against their teachings? The government should make its own homosexual churches. I wonder why it never does that instead it forces Christian values down the drain?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That's one of the problems with Christianity, that they step in and claim that what someone else is doing is infringing on their own personal rights. Then they try to claim marriage as a Christian institution or a religious one and do everything in their power to make it illegal for homosexuals. Marriage has NOTHING to do with Christianity or the Bible, even though you have prescriptions or regulations for it. That is ONLY just for Christians to follow. If you feel a country's/planet's values should be Christian, then you are very mistaken.

And no one's saying that the Church of Southern Baptists (the most anti-everything Christian group that's still considered Christianity) are legally required to marry homosexuals or heterosexual neo-nazis or face discrimination charges. They can continue existing as they do, except they lose their right to infringe on a right that they never had the right to infringe on in the first place. Simple as that.

Yes if those teaching includes forcing that religion on others. Personally I would ban public display of religion as harmful for minors.

Also, why should legal part of marriage really have anything to do with any religion? Why can't it just be fully secular mater?

Comment has been collapsed.

Uh, what? I live in Sweden. Here same sex marriage is allowed, whether it is religious or a partnership. I did not state - anywhere - in my post claiming Christianity (which is not the only religion in the world that has marriages, you know) should be forced down any drain.

Please stop thinking that everything revolves around Christianity, just because your own perspective is that of a Christian.

Canadian Broadcast in the USA... '_'

Actually, no, not "in the USA." For over a decade, I lived in Seattle until somewhat recently. We were able to get and watch a couple Canadian stations, can't remember them all, but the one that sticks out the most is PBS. So we had 2 PBS stations, and they ran two different sets of shows/programs. I would tune into the Canadian one from time to time, around 9 or 10, to watch the Red Green Show.

I think that has more to do with specific state or local laws.

Why oh why ?! Do we have such annoying controversial topic in a game giveaway website? It always devolves into a political debate which is oddly reminiscent of a couple of idiots fighting about whose prick is better. We have at least 15 page scrolls of some debate raging on (though the chain posting is cool, always enjoy that).

Going back to the topic though, I have a couple of cool anecdotes from my uncle from his visits to china for business, lets see, the flower Jasmine is banned, Reincarnation is also banned if you have no permission (watch out Dalai Lama) and finally my favorite one, Game Consoles -_- .

Buckyballs are banned.

Apparently, the giant warning saying "DO NOT GIVE TO PEOPLE UNDER 15 YEARS OLD" and "DO NOT SWALLOW THESE MAGNETS" doesn't mean anything when people find out that their children ate magnets then sue the company.

Angry face.

Also, for some strange reason having a rifle in California with a separate pistol grip is illegal, but if you connect the bottom of the pistol grip with the stock then detach it from the buffer tube it's somehow legal despite acting exactly the same, but looking more retarded.

Lawn darts are illegal, which is also really stupid, but then again, maybe people can't read the warning that says "DO NOT THROW SHARP POINTY OBJECTS STRAIGHT UP IN THE AIR BECAUSE THEY COME DOWN AND KILL PEOPLE"

Awesome adaptive LED headlights are banned because by law all cars in the US must have a high-low settings, rather than an array of independently adjusted headlights that avoid oncoming traffic while adjusting their brightness. That regulation is probably about 50-60 years old now.

7n6 ammunition was recently banned from Russian import, not because of recent crises, but because some guy legally built a pistol using it. For some odd reason involving armor piercing ammunition in pistols, it got banned. Huh.

I think someone already said Kinder Surprise.
