So, I recently binge-played FF9. It was my first, and only, Final Fantasy I've ever played. I'm being honest here when I say it is quite honestly THE best game I've ever played with Chrono Cross at a VERY close second. So, here you go. Hopefully someone else can experience this god damn amazing.

My review is below. If you don't mind rating it and giving feedback, I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to write more reviews, especially on games I'm passionate about.

Also, hello. I've been away for a while. Again. What's up? Will probably bump this thread every so often, for the giveaway. Please discuss the topic of the poll. I'm interested, but don't turn this into a FF-politics threads, heh.

Giveaway : https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/1v5Bd/final-fantasy-ix

Edit : Bumping for the last week + 2 days of the giveaway. Cheers!

Only finished FFVIII and I thought it was a pretty good game, doesn't understand the hate towards it.

Chrono Cross and Chrono Trigger are both superb jrpg. Hope to win this one :)

FFX is mine. I loved Bliztball and it was the first game I played with Voice Acting. Though FF Mystic Quest was cool as well as VIII (though VIII did NOT age well for me and I want to beat it, but god damn it will be hard to do.)

Do you know that Blitzball is based on some old football games? (Tecmo CUP from the N.E.S. was the first one that i played )

I haven't played FF9 since my PS1 died over a decade ago. Now I've got 5 FF in my steam library (and 3 of them with maxed out achivements, killing 10k enemies without gaining experience in FF8 took some time), 3 more on my smartphone. I love the series, and thank you for the chance to complete my collection.

I played all since i grow up with the series. Usually 90 kids will say VII is the best, older gamers say is VI, for me the one i really loved and spent hundreds of hours was X. Awesome storyline with mind f*cks plot twist, one of the best mini game inside a game in gaming history (blitzball), the graphics were top at the time and even today don't have any kind of problem, the sphere grid... oh the sphere grid is so amazing and unforgiving if people don't understand it from the start hahaha, the dark aeons fights (please don't use Yojimbo, is a cheat :P), the methods to catch legendary weapon... Man that game don't have impact moments like VII in levels of storyline but for me is still today the best FF and is on my top 3 games of all time.

Hey, glad you've joined FFFamily :D

Try other ones + Chrono Trigger, they're all worth those 40-60 hours (if you won't hunt achievs) that you might spend with them.

Also thanks for gib!

FF-politics, heh. FFVI is the best. My understanding is that FFIX is kind of a throwback to the older games and it was kinda overlooked/underappreciated at the time and then they went on to FFX, which was more in tune with what they did with FFVIII, which defined the direction the series has gone in ever since, and not for the better.

Hello, thanks for the GA, I really like FF games. So far I only played to first ones, mostly with Snes emulator. So I'm exited about a more recent one.
Like said @KingOfVoid Chrono Trigger is a great game too.

I consider my personal favourite VIII but I still have to play to the end 2, 5, 6 and 9.
I like many other JRPGs, but my favourite is probably Earthbound.

My first one was XII and it's still my favourite one (played 7, some 8, 10, 10-2, some 3 remake and well, 12), probably mostly because of the monsters being out in the world and not being teleported to a battle screen once every x steps

Only played Final Fantasy 7 and 8 back in the day. I really liked them but never got around to playing the other FF.

Thanks for the chance :)

I'm biased towards FFV cause it was the first game i've ever played. I couldn't even read the game, so I had to be with my uncle to play, but o boi I even cried when spoilers, spoilers (Funny thing I enjoyed a heavly story-driven, pixel graphic, turn-based game so much when I couldn't even understand english)
And then there was FFX, which was also my first PS2 game and I really enjoyed it. Also it had Blitzball, which was a major time waster

Im not a fan of the FF franchise.
I freaking love Final Fantasy Tactics- but thats the non-FF game they reshaped as FF and isn't comparable ot the others- and was digging FF 8 back in the day until i hit more open worldness and grind (was more impressed by setting, story and some novelty of gameplay then actually going trough).

But your review and account of 'best game ever played', also added to someone with a classic fallout avatar on one of the few FF i never touched made me wishlist this one. I recall back in the day a friend of mine being crazy about FF 9 over others and i completely ignored him since id lost my interest and disliked some. You reminded me of him and hey, maybe i lost the wagon after all.

So there you go- you made a non FF and non jrpg fan wishlist the game with your review. Pretty good.

Well, I can tell you right now, FF9's story had quality just as much as FO1/2, albeit they both did their story in different ways but they can definitely be put side by side in terms of quality, in my opinion.

Id guessed. Light hearted fantasy is way different then grim with dark humor. You got my hopes up cause i enjoy all genres for a great story is a great one regardless. One of my fears on aproaching a FF game is the grind (and save key battles if you're not over or underpowered the classic combat is meh for me) but you explained some of the changes of the steam version that i can use whenever that kicks in. I was clueless it had that, very good pointing that out :D

You can honestly just use the "cheat" options if you want, I personally see no shame in it, especially near the end of the game. If you want a challenge from the game, I suggest playing it (and the fast forward is entirely up to how you want to spend your time, I personally get turned off from excessive time spent grinding as it's the same thing over and over, but I understand why it's naturally there in games like these) without them but if you just want to experience the story and not worry about the combat, then it's fine to just put on max GIL, max level / stones, etc. and flow through the story without any stops.

You'll get less hours out of it obviously, as grinding does tend to take up time, even if you're fast-forwarding, but it's about the experience you get out of the game, not how long you experience it for.

The Game Boosters also don't lock you out of achievements either, as far as I know. I never used the permanent ones, but the toggle ones don't.

Nice review, the part about how the porting was done is especially troubling ( •̀_•́)
For me it would be between FFVIII, FFX, FFX-2 🤔
