Well, as it must happen with some gamers, sometimes I get overloaded with work or household chores... and without much enthusiasm to finish anything (shame on me).

When this happens, I usually play games that have fixed rounds, alternating each turn with a task. For example: I put the clothes to wash and play one turn, wash the dishes and play another turn, and so on… This helps me to do some tasks without feeling overwhelmed or sad because I am unable to dedicate a lot of time to myself or because I don't take care of my house and other responsibilities (ok, it's weird, but it works).

So… I need very specific games, which have regular time shifts. Like This War of Mine (which was the first game I won here, four years ago) and This is The Police I and II, which divide the shifts into days, where you perform some actions and then end the round.

4x games don’t work, because the initial turns of the game are very fast (since you have little to manage), and the final turns are too long (since you have a million cities, soldiers, workers and enemies to worry about). The ideal is that the turns always have an approximate duration (around 10 minutes, perhaps?).

If you can recommend something that can help me (while I still have fun) I will be very grateful. : )

For those who have not yet had the opportunity to play any of the games I mentioned, click here.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is Dead Age and, presumably, Dead Age 2 though I haven't played 2 yet.

Dead Age 2 looks more 'polished', but Dead Age has better reviews. I'll keep an eye on both in the next Steam sales.

Thanks, atxferret!

Just keep in mind, Dead Age is neither particularly good nor interesting. It's just okay and otherwise fits the bill.

Dungeons of Dredmor, Doors of Insanity. You can pause or save anywhere.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl, you clear the area of mutants and bandits, then when it's time for the laundry, you sit at the nearest campfire with your friendly NPC's while listening to them chatting and playing the guitar, which is sort of necessary to let time pass (the world changes over time).

Hi, Rosebonbon! I put Doors of Insanity on my wishlist yesterday (loved the style!), and the description about STALKER made me curious... I had already seen it on Steam, but I left it out because it is a quite old game.

Well, right now I'm playing and enjoying very much XCOM: Chimera Squad, which seems to fit your requirements quite well.

The game gets quite a few negative reviews, because it's not X-COM 3, which it never claimed to be, but a much smaller scale turn-based SWAT Team game, well rooted in X-COM universe, with pretty simple strategic overview layer and surprisingly deep tactical gameplay. The whole campaign is ~90 day long, with 10-15 min tactical encounters every 1-2 days. It still has some bugs, but so far in 40+ hours played I have not encountered anything gamebreaking.

In spite of both those problems it not only has a quite decent 72.51% SteamDB rating, but also surprisingly high total playtime (according to SteamSpy average 10.5h, median 12h) with at least 40 percent of users claiming achievement which require 4h+ of playing.

I loved the first XCOM and Chimera and 2 have been on my backlog for some time. It is probably one of the next games that I will start when I have some free time.

It is good to meet another fan of the franchise (and video-games) who understands that each game is unique within the universe and that they do not necessarily need to be the sequence of each other. : )

I'm not sure if it would fit but... Sheltered is kind of a less dark/emotional version of This War Of Mine? Sheltered 2 is also in the works, so if you do end up trying and enjoying the first, it's something to look out for in the future.

Beyond that, the most I can think is Turn Based or Tactic RPG's, but... Not sure how well they'd fit in terms of anything outside of combat if you can't sit for cutscenes, or to walk around in some cases. If one like Final Fantasy Tactics was available on PC, I'd highly recommend it since it gives a fair amount of freedom to get up and do stuff, but I can't think of many that would allow for such on PC. Perhaps the Disgaea games, I haven't played them yet, but they could fit the role.

Apparently Sheltered fits well with the type of game you were looking for. I didn't know they had already launched a sequel.

Oh, boy... FFT is one of my favorite games of all time and I still don't understand how it is not yet available on Steam. On the day you put this game there, I will do nothing but play for a few days! On second thought, it would be a great game to alternate with my tasks, since the battles are not long...

Just looking at your backlog, Serial Cleaner is a fun little game that is split into days. Shouldn't be a problem stopping in the middle of a level either if you're in a place where you won't get detected.

Since FTL (https://store.steampowered.com/app/212680/FTL_Faster_Than_Light) has been suggested already in this thread (masterpiece of roguelites, absolutely recommended), I would suggest you Into the Breach (https://store.steampowered.com/app/590380/Into_the_Breach) from the same developers (Subset Games).
It is completely turn based, constant number of units to move per round (3), low number of actions per unit, approximately the same number of turns per encounter (the win condition is to survive X turns, not to eliminate all enemies). It is more puzzle-y than FTL, since there are way more parameters under your control. Also, for the same reason, a bit less repayable than its brother.

So, I got FTL as a gift. I installed and played for a few hours (while doing some other tasks, of course). And... it's really addictive!

But even in the easy way I don't think I managed to get very far in my first three attempts. The game is apparently simple, but it is very challenging. : )

Glad you are liking it! Yeah it's a pretty deceptive game, simple to learn yet very hard to master. I don't think I've finished it with more than 1 ship on normal, to be honest :)
I hope it lets you keep doing some chores in between worlds :)

Nice way of dealing with the chores, I also struggle with it little. ;)

I am not sure if anyone suggested it or if it's up to your taste, but what about Time management games?
Something like this:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/342580/12_Labours_of_Hercules/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/494230/Hearts_Medicine__Time_to_Heal/
https://store.steampowered.com/app/211800/Dead_Hungry_Diner/

They can be played in short segments, so you can easily divide your time. :)

I was pretty much surprised by Heart's Medicine, as it has rather heavy and serious story for this kind of game. But I have really enjoyed it and got some more games from the developer. :)

And I thought I never see this game series in this forum EVER. Had to think it was a very niche game that only a few have ever seen. Appart from that, the prices are a bit on the high side for a mobile port. I have the other parts of "Hearts medicine" and "Parker & Lane" on my wishlist since 1 year but never saw a single discount or bundle for them, but ITAD told me you could grab it 2 years ago for 2$

Hmm, didn't know that they were just ports. Years back I have played first games in the Delicious series and really enjoyed it, so I am glad to be able to grab some other games from them on Steam. Also missed it for 2€, but grabbed it for 3,79€ and I think that's pretty good price. ;)

Comment has been collapsed.

4€ is okay but not the normal 10/11€.
You can identify most mobile ports when they have alot of mini games that are designed around drag&drop or swiping moves with big hit zones. In the mobile version are apperently ingame cash grabs so I wont try that. But it still looks super cute and relaxing (like hidden object games).

Since many people have suggested the XCOM series, and you said that you played and enjoyed the first game, then BATTLETECH is worth a look. Also Valkyria Chronicles and Valkyria Chronicles 4. Similar squad-based tactical combat. You move all of your units on your part of the turn, then the enemy takes their turn.

You also mentioned loving FFT. I, too, would probably drop everything and start replaying it immediately if it came to Steam. Until then, here are a few FFT-likes that ARE on Steam:
Fae Tactics
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance
PopUp Dungeon
Telepath Tactics

This one might be a bit different, but One Way Heroics might be worth a look. Every action you take (taking a step, swinging your weapon, opening a chest, etc) is one turn. Everything else only acts when you do, so you can stop whenever you like and walk away, and the game will stay exactly where you left things.

Star Traders: Frontiers is also worth a look. There are elements of FTL and Darkest Dungeon wrapped up with an open-end sandbox RPG/trading sim. You can get involved in the story and have an impact on how things unfold if you like, or completely ignore it and let the galaxy unfold around you as you run off to he a merchant or pirate or mercenary or whatever else you please.

I don't know if I understood the Battletech. It seemed to me like XCOM, with a sequence of battles per turn, necessary to advance the story. That's right? Valkyria Chronicles has been on my backlog for years. I think it was one of the first games I bought when I arrived on Steam.
I need to play it!

Fae Tactics was already on my wish list. I added some of the others, most notably the Pop Dungeon which looked very interesting with the card thing (I was curious to know how they work).

Thanks, axolotlprime! : )

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, Battletech follows a very similar turn structure to XCOM. One big difference is that there is no pressure to advance the story. You can take your time and do as many regular missions as you like between the main story missions. They will wait for you. There is also Career Mode, which skips the story entirely and lets you be a mercenary company for hire anywhere in the galaxy (story mode locks you into a small corner of it).

I got Pop Up Dungeon in this month's Humble Choice and have really been enjoying it. It feels more casual at times, but some of the encounters are actually very challenging. I'm also a sucker for games that let you add custom content, so this one works for me on multiple levels.

Also want to mention games 60 seconds (https://store.steampowered.com/app/368360/60_Seconds/ ) and 60 parsecs (https://store.steampowered.com/app/646270/60_Parsecs/ ). This is survival strategic text games with lots of humor. It's separated on days (but they could be pretty short). Could fit to your playstyle.

I hadn't seen the second game yet. In the pre-internet era there were many flash games in this art style, but they were essentially point-and-click games, without that dimension of "survival" (which is a relatively new concept in games).

Hey, I saw that you had a GA with no winners. What happens in that case? Can't you try again by changing the the participation requirements?

I enjoyed the game but it has some flaws: its RNG based means you can lose because of bad luck. one type of enemy also cause the game to be uncontrollable from the main screen.

the no winners GA is because I set the requirements too high. there is no winner so nobody has seen the key, in the future I will remake a giveaway for it
